X Box 2 Being Rushed?
Here's an excellent article discussing the issues facing the next generation of gaming consoles focusing on Microsoft possibly shooting itself in the foot by rushing X Box 2 out the door:

In a future post I'll be discussing my chip Mod'd X-Box experiences. In short, I'm liking the current X Box and don't need a next generation box that requires time to hack interfering with my fun!
I would like X Box first to market for the next generation but also don't want a weak system so I can wait. Supposedly PS3, which will have a totally new chip powering it that thus far sounds amazing, may not be out until 2007 so Microsoft waiting until early 2006 wouldn't hurt them that much.

Sega tanked because there were just not enough mass market titles during the time leading to when the PS2 launched. It was a hardcore gamer system w/ quirky titles. Not having EA on board really hurt them as well. MS also doesn't have the dubious reputation Sega had with their prior generation failure, Saturn. Most would agree that while the Xbox numbers aren't mindblowing, they did penetrate pretty well even though the PS2 is an utter juggernaut.Xouqoa wrote:Being the first one out is usually pretty disasterous, just ask Sega!
Honestly, the reason for this move is the first point Fahey eluded to in the article, MS is just getting killed on a per hardware basis. Nvidia is just one of numerous component suppliers that hurt their bottom line unit to unit.
Sega tanked because publisher's didn't support the Dreamcast after the Saturn debacle. Which is a shame because it was a nice little machine with some great titles.
The Saturn was just horrid and blew away Sega's dominance in Europe after the Megadrive/Genesis. Basing their first 32-bit machine on 2D gaming was the biggest strategic bollock-dropping in the recent history of videogames.

Saw today that Xbox 2 won't be backwards compatible with Xbox games, due to a drastically different console architecture...

X-Box 2 not being backward compatible is a huge mistake.
-Xbox 2 needs to be hackable. If it isn't, I may as well just buy a PS2/3. The PS2 has better games (FFX! CoN!) and PS3 will have HD so there would be no reason to buy an XBox 2 over PS3.
-XBox 2 needs to not skimp on the prosessor like XBox did. 733 was cheesy even at the initial release of XBox. ATI > nVidia. Good job!
-XBox 2 needs to be backward compatible as I don't want two game consoles cluttering up my living room.
I know what Microsoft is thinking...they plan on some oddball recording media that wont be easily copied like DVDs and that's why they are saying it wont be backward compatibile. I maintain that the hacker scene is a necessary component of consoles and helps rather than hinders them. If they want to make money, focus on the XBox live games that require you to buy the games.
Hacked or not, people seeing XBoxs in action sell more XBoxes. If PS3 is hackable then friends of hackers will see PS3s and buy them whether they hack or not. You have to be one level above retarded to hack game consoles so you will still have the majority of people buying games. It's free advertising no matter what.

The lateral compatibillity thing I heard of was from either Gamepro or EGM, cant recall at the moment. However this was when the ps3 was still far from even halfway completed, so it was probably just an idea being thrown around. So I'm not just pulling this out of my ass. However, the pc on console thing I cant remember at all the source. So you can get me on that.
After a swell of controversy from yesterday’s article at Gamesindustry.biz regarding no backward compatibility between the Xbox 2 and the current Xbox platform, we have received an official statement from Microsoft that appears to deflate many of the claims as pure speculation:
“Recent stories in the press about future Xbox products are nothing more than pulp fiction. Microsoft hasn’t made any announcements regarding the next generation, so it’s far too early to speculate about specifics, including backward compatibility. In fact, this media conjecture is irresponsible. The credibility of any publication willing to compromise fact in favor of a catchy headline must be questioned. Xbox fans are smart enough to distinguish truth from sensational reporting.”
While this statement doesn’t definitively state that the Xbox 2 will or will not support backward compatibility, it appears that the feature is still up in the air at this point.
any game i want that is available on xbox, i get it.
Not too many good games for xbox though, i have these..
NFSU (For XBOX, PS2, PC, GC)
Counter Strike (For PC and XBOX, but its just a single player custom battle mode for Condition Zero on PC)
Enter the Matrix (XBOX/PC/PS2/GC)
Morrowind (PC/XBOX, got it cuz my comp sucks)
Only games i have that are only found on console for xbox are cstrike and morrowind, which i have them both on my PC anyway.
Arent too many good games ive found for XBOX only. (by xbox only i mean xbox/pc only)

The only worthwhile exclusive games on PS2 I found were FFX and Champions of Norrath so it's not like one game console has a monopoly on good games as Halo is the best FPS and that's on XBox. Add Project Gotham Racing 2 to the XBox list because that game rocks.Rayquan wrote:any game i want that is available on xbox, i get it.

Between the game consoles, XBox looks the best for the identical games released almost always.
