Just saw it, I enjoyed it, but then again I enjoyed Van Helsing so take that for what it's worth.
SPOILER BELOW:
Condensing the 10 year war to like a month was a bit disappointing. Then again the book only talks about the key events at the beginning and then fast forwards 10 years so it's not that bad. I was thinking it would be worse if they did a "Then ten years later" type thing. Historically most of the time was spent pillaging, which doesn't make for a good movie really.
The fighting was the best part from the hero combat to the hoplite combat it was pretty good. The love story wasn't as good, mostly if you like reading the book which focuses on the key heroes you'll like the movie.
Be warned though there is a great deal of shall we say poetic license, I guess if your going to shorten it by 9 years you would need a great deal of it.

Well it could be for people who were expecting something else from the movie then what it is, like myself
. Everything that happens in the book happens in the movie in a round about way. Hard to spoil a story that has been around for around 3000 years.

Usually I just took the gods involvement in the war as metaphorical although a lot of it was done through human action, like Apollo guiding Paris' arrow to Achilles’ heel. I'll have to read the book again, haven't done that in a while.

I havnt seen the movie yet but i dont see why everyones complaining about Brad Pitt as achilles, i think he would fit the role really well. I think hes a great actor never the less, and a lot of times Achillies is potrayed as a whiney egotistical dude who bitches and complains about everything, including going to war, etc.

Was a really good movie, but i think it had a potential to be better...th eonly person to blame was the director, he was given a great story and did great with the characters and there developement but he didnt add ANY visual or cinimatic life,
If this movie was directed by Ridley Scott it would be one of the best movies i had ever seen.
SPOILER (kinda, but not really)
I wish they showed more of Aneaid (sp) at the end (the guy paris gave the sword of troy to)
He is the definition of a badass and by far my favorite mythological hero
His family dies, he gets pissed the fuck off and gives the greeks at the end a fucking ass whoppin before fleeing, going on a little sea adventure, fucking a lot of chicks who kill themselves after he leaves, then he fathers Romulous and Remes and founds rome

I don't know.. I thought of Agent Smith during Lord of the Rings.Winnow wrote:There's trouble brewing when thoughts are on a different movie and character while the current one is playing. The immersion level must have been low for this flick.

It wasn't that. It's just that I think Orlando Bloom is very associated with being Legolas. Mr. Smith is another good example. Add to that the fact that he used the EXACT SAME pulling method on his bow, and the fact that he had a bow in his hands at all, and you're going to have some recollections to the prior role.Winnow wrote:There's trouble brewing when thoughts are on a different movie and character while the current one is playing. The movie itself is awesome.

After i went to see the movie, a question came to me. I was wondering if the greece mythologie (sp) is learned by kids in school in the USA. I dont want to derail this thread, and i m not saying that US education si worse than here. It s just that where i live (switzerland) and i think pretty much everywhere else in europa, the history of the greece is learned at school when kids are around 10.

I started reading Greek mythology on my own when I was in second grade. ~8 years old. When I'd exhausted Greek mythology, I started reading Roman, and then Norse Mythology. By fourth grade, I'd read all of the Arthurian mythology that was available to me.
In late fifth or sixth grade, ~12-13 I think, we covered Greek mythology in school. Since I was already familiar with it, I got through all of the tests and essays rather easily, but a lot of kids didn't like it due to the strange names, and stories.

I can recall studying it in a general sort of way(battles and political/historical stuff) a few times between elementary and high school. However I really got a chance to learn the mythology when I opted to take a 'Humanities 1 & 2' course my Senior year. And then more of those types of classes in college.
Sadly Xorian, in the US most study of the classics is reserved for high school and college electives. Those that want to seek them out usually have an avenue, but no - the average Joe has no idea what the Trojan War was all about (or the Punic Wars etc..).
Most "Western Civilization" history survey courses gloss over the beginning of time through the start of the 20th century in like no time then focus on nationalism and the world wars etc - bleah. Very disappointing to me. I was a History Major in college at one point. Most ancient history you can better pick up in a Literature course focusing on primary sources.

I had a chance via Newsflix to see this movie last night.
It had zero historical value but was watchable due to the eye candy factor. I don't mean Pitt! The women were pretty hot in the movie as well. It reminded me of Starship Troopers where everyone looks like Ken and Barby dolls.
The trojen horse seemed like an afterthought in this movie and after taking a look at how they portrayed in in the film, the Trojans deserved to die if they fell for that stunt. That horse was almost see through. There's no way you wouldn't have spotted the people inside!
The movie was very shallow but Pitt did an OK job. I would summarize Troy as good mindless entertainment if you're in the mood for nice scenery.
7/10 for straight men
8/10 for women
10/10 for gay men

BUMP!
I never saw this in the theater, but bought and watched teh DVD the other night. I thought it was fantastic. The characters were well developed, had some good lines, and it hit all the high points of the story.
It's also funny to go back and read everyone complain about Brad Pitt in this role after seeing it on DVD. He was fucking ripped for this role. Bird legs? That's almost funny to me. Brad Pitt has one of the most envied bodies in Hollywood. In the film, he was the fiercest warrior in history. He was a hero amoung men with no equal and he played the part to a "T".
Eric Bana was an excellent cast as well. He also seemed pretty ripped for this film. I see great things in his future.
The minor love stories were decent, but didn't hog too much screen time. The battles were all epic, and I really liked the close up and personal approach as heros met on the field and many times decided the sway of battle for that day based on which side won or lost thier hero.
The good guys were good, and the bad guys were bad. Great characters died and honor was still the word of the day. I give Troy an 9 out of 10, eaisly tieing with Gladiator as my favortie period piece.

I don't care how ripped Pitt was, Alexander has nothing close to the classic lines of Gladiator:
Maximus: At my signal, unleash hell.
Maximus: What we do in life echoes in eternity.
Maximus: My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.
Commodus: It vexes me. I'm terribly vexed.
Proximo: Those giraffes you sold me, they won't mate. They just walk around, eating, and not mating. You sold me... queer giraffes. I want my money back.
Commodus: AM I NOT MERCIFUL?
-----
Seriously Fairweather, there's no comparison between Alexander and Gladiator. The script, the acting, the score are so much better in Gladiator.
Alexander was a joke after they broke into Troy. There's no chance in hell the cheap version of the horse built for the movie wouldn't reveal the people inside and the death of Alexander was so corny at the end where he happens to run into the women.
Come on...be realistic. If you had to rate the two movies on a 10 point scale, Gladiator would be around 9 and Alexander would be lucky to be in the 5-6 range.
Saw this in theaters. I thought Pitts performace was extremely flat, and the amount of license they took with the story irritated me. Bana by far had the strongest performance in my opinion.
On the plus side, the fighting was generally well done, and you deffinately got an impression of the hard ass Achilles was supposed to be.

The music wasn't too bad.. Except for the fact that it was too much in the Gladiator style. That was most unoriginal and annoying.vn_Tanc wrote:I thought it was too long, too flat, very "meh", had some decent action and the music was awful.
And I think people are trying to compare it to the book too much. Which is odd considering there is no book called 'Troy' (well there probably is now.. But people are really getting confused with The Illiad). This isn't like Lord of the Rings. It's simply a movie based on a story.
