Fuck sony's naming policy.

No holds barred discussion. Someone train you and steal your rare spawn? Let everyone know all about it! (Not for the faint of heart!)

EQ is very condusive to roleplay.

People whined that AO wasn't conducive to roleplay but there were prominent guilds who were 100% roleplay.

What elements in Everquest would hinder your immersion if you were are dedicated roleplayer?
Just about all the bugs I can remember... Monsters that walk in crooked lines to get to you. Monsters that teleport (without casting a spell). Monsters that hit you through walls, and can cast spells around corners. Items on bodies that dont make sense. Like a kobold that drops a sword when they only hit you with their hands. The boats don't have drivers(or do they now?), and if they are automated, where is the machinery? The entire faction system...I should be able to rob someone of my own race without the ENTIRE race finding out about it. There are just lots of things, and I can continue if you like but you probably don't. ;)

Lohrno, I liked you a lot, but you played far too long ago to be commenting on bugs in Everquest.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

yea, there is no such thing as bad pathing anymore and the mobs never warp. Not to mention how much more fun it is knowing that mobs will never hit you thru walls. EQ is bug free now :D

I fail to see how this is relevant...Especially considering every SINGLE item he mentioned, is not only still in game, but is actually a PART of the game.

It's not a bug, in the 'oops this isn't working' sense of the word.
But a bug, as in a discrepency, something that doesn't belong or make sense.

Actually I have. 10th ring war for Nolani. If you recall, I led it.

Glad to see one of us was paying attention.

Regarding the bugs, yes they are all still there, but there is a lot more to EQ that has been added since Lohrno played. A lot of what has been added contributes immensely to a player's ability to roleplay should he or she choose to do so.

The number one contributing factor to being able to roleplay or not is the player himself, not the game or the bugs.

You were in Legion of Mischief at the time. You were playing an Ogre shaman named Spangaloid. Unless of course there's another Spangaloid on Veeshan.

i am not denying i wasn't there, i sure enough was. however, there is no way in hell you can judge my playability of a shaman from that ring war.

He does have a point but thanks for stickin up for me Tru. ;)

Hmm someone said they fixed the bugs and pathing though?

(IE the mobs don't walk in zig zag patterns now?)

Well that's cool. ;)

Okay well what about these?

Did they make it so that you get cold in cold regions like Permafrost, and ... er oh hell what was that cave with all the ice giants...you know what I mean...

And the desert (ro comes to mind but there are probably a couple more...), do you need more water, or to dress down because of it?

Granted this could be considered sacrificing realism for fun, but most roleplayers like to get into it, and like the realism. (Sitting there at the forge for 1 hour IRL to make something just because it's realistic is not fun of course)

Yes, I realize it's a computer RPG, not a real RPG, but I think because of that they should allow any name...

err sorry

Post by Lohrno »

Sorry, that was kind of lame at the last part...Actually I meant to say a lot more but had to quickly hit the post button and leave. Some more things that break immersion (I don't know if they have addressed them so bear with me...)

NPCs that repeat themselves in the exact wording every time.
NPCs that give the exact same quests. (You'd think that Blahia the Sorceress would stop losing her mystic wand after the 50th time...)
NPCs don't fidget or do anything other than stand there. (Some walk around a little...)
NPCs don't go to bed. If it's 3am it's kind of strange that the bank, all
shops, etc. still work.
NPCs never change clothing. -- I can understand store uniforms, but the local merchants should have a more extensive wardrobe...
The sky ALWAYS being the same.
Being able to jump from 80 ft and living just because you have high hp.
etc..

It's not that I don't like EQ, I like it, it's just not conducive to RPing I think...

If those are your criteria, you're not going to have much luck finding a condusive RPG for you to roleplay.

No computer game will ever be conducive to a true RP environment. There is no possible way to code reactions for every oddball thing PC would decide to want to do. You want RP play pen and paper. CRPGs will never be real RP plain and simple.

EQ, imo, is VERY conductive to role-play.
Will there ever be a MMORPG where Role-playing is the norm? Highly doubtful... Unless they manage to implement a built-in ( not requiring GMs, that is ) way to punish people for not role-playing, you will always have very marginal role-playing, with a some people that are hardcore in that aspect ( Hello FV... See many people there? ), some people that say the occasional 'aye', people that speak normally and then the dewds.

Yeah, I realize that I'm being a little too(or a lot ;)) nitpicky at times but as far as NPC conversations, they can be changed to at least have a lot more variety with only a little bit more effort...And they already have patterns, they can be programmed to go to bed and close the shop at night.

And as far as the last thing about CRPGs never being real RP, that's also kind of my point... Why have the naming policy if it's not roleplay? I mean the reason (beside vulgarities...) they give for having their naming policy is that it is intended to keep the feel of the environment (IE: not break people's immersion) The game itself already does that (break immersion), so why bother with the naming policy?

Also...

Post by Lohrno »

Also I just think they can do better as far as trying to keep the roleplayability is all. I mean I realize it's an MMORPG and very very complicated, but there are just a lot of things they can fix. But they don't because they're already raking in the bucks. (and I'm not criticizing for that I'm just noting...) If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But it's also more cost effective to not waste GMs' time by making them patrol for names. I mean they have a lot of stuff to do, (a lot of them ARE paid as I understand...) what with bugs, settling disputes and all. So in short:

They have to pay GMs to go make people change their names.

It's not useful to have a naming policy like that, because it's a CRPG with a lot of limitations put on it because it's MMO.

People don't really want it. And those that do will likely leave because if they are true RPers. Like Sabek said, if you want real RP, go play P&P.

So, really, what's the point of the naming policy then? ;)

Somthing is better than nothing IMO. Someone has to stop <Snatcheater Thundertits> from completely fucking up any semblance, no matter how small, of an RP environment.

I've always thought they've done rather well with enforcing the naming policy.

Yeah, I suppose it's a step in the right direction at least. ;)

But I think there are other more valuable things they could work on. It seems like too little too late to me or something...
