Re: Shadowrun
Haha you moron.
Anirask was in a bunch of games with us.
I suck pretty hard at shooters but I still had a lot of fun.
What was the deal with the sound/noise shit you messaged me about?
I don't even have a mic, the mic input channel was muted/off and other voice chat was ultra quiet. I had to fiddle with the volume settings, putting everything at volume level 1 and turning the voicechat channel up to 11. Even then, it was occasionally drowned out by game sounds.

Re: Shadowrun
Voicechat is much more effective on the 360 in my opinion, unless there is a PC setting to make only voicechat go to headphones and keep all other sounds coming from the speakers.

Re: Shadowrun
Sadly the PC doesn't isolate voice chat from other PC sounds like the 360 does. For the 360, I have regular sound come from the TV or the 5.1 and voice chatter coming through the headset.
Was cool to play with you guys though. Last night was my first Shadowrun MP experiences but it was an absolute blast to play. Thank god FASA doesn't keep records or individual player stats.
It's a real fun game however and I got to see some very interesting strategies play out last night.
Looking forward to playing quite a bit over the weekend.
Oh, and my Gamertag is indeed Anirask.

Sounds like a good fun game this, since it seems you ol blokes had one helluva time!
So, would you say this is the most fun FPS at this time, ol chaps?
More fun than Counterstrike, Half-Life, Quake, Unreal and what else is out there?

The only online FPS games I was ever really into are Quake2, UT and Tribes.
It's literally been years since I've played a FPS online.

Re: Shadowrun
I wouldn't say my favorite.. I have a lot of favorites, but that is because there is some variety. I like gears for a straight up close range combat game, ghost recon for tactical warfare, and shadowrun for a nice hybrid game that mixes things up. That being said the game is a lot of fun, and it is a nice change from the usual stuff.
I do hope they come out with some new maps and game types soon though.

Re: Shadowrun
Didn't make it on last night sadly. My wife rented "Pursuit of Happiness" and it wouldn't play on the PC cause of Sony's BS ARccOS copy protection. Due to that, I let her use the TV to watch the movie.
Re: Shadowrun
I tried this game out last night and played the six chapter tutorial.
For an FPS type game, I think it's a great new entry. As I went through the chapters learning about each new magic, tech, and also the special abilities unique to the races, I had a hard time trying to figure out which three of them to buy/use. Just about every one seemed useful to me and even the races had me thinking hard on which one would be most useful.
In the end, I think I'd play a dwarf as the mana sucking/draining ability, immunity to minions and strangleweed (and ability to easily kill minions and remove strangleweed), and ability to survive a headshot made them a little better IMO over the trolls, elves and humans.
I liked the glide, warping, vision, and even smokescreen in some cases but the way the game is setup to only allow you to choose three abilitys during a match adds much to the strategy.
An early strategy I pondered was to play a dwarf and get the sniper rifle, minion, strangle and the "super targetting"ability. Using this setup in capture the flag, I'd drop a minion to protect the flag and then find a spot out of the way to snipe enemies approaching the flag. Nice combo as surviving a headshot allowed me to not move around too much as a sniper and the strangleweed stuff could be throw around to slow down the enemy as well. Nice defensive setup.
Didn't like the mini gun. The spin-up time takes too long. Kiked the "gush of air" ability as it devastates smoke-screened opponents while also knocking normal opponents off their feet, giving you time to escape or counterattack.
Overall, it seemed like a fun game for the more hardcore FPS players that want to take the time to learn various fighting styles. It also seems like one of those games where you'll have your ass handed to you if you're a casual player. People may have had very high expectations for this game because of the name, etc but I think it's very good for what it is.

Re: Shadowrun
For me, I've found a good combo with the troll:
Tree of Life
Smoke
Wired or Smartlink
Shotgun
This of course ignores all the skills you can buy and use with the quick cast (b + skill + r trigger).

I usually pick Troll with Smartlink, Tree and Teleport.
Being so slow, teleport helps for escaping 2-3 on 1 situations.

Re: Shadowrun
I'm loving this game thus far.
One thing I've been noticing is that a lot of organised teams tend to setup trees, trolls in a chokepoint and take out the other team trying to power through. Then you have the Elf that comes around the back with a Katana and mortally wound the players.
I think starting off with an AM grenade, chucking it at and tree you see might be a good strat.
Also, Healing from a tree will stop a mortal wound FYI.

Re: Shadowrun
I was getting chased by one of those the other day and dealt with it (aka got away) by just turning around and throwing some Strangle in his path.
That shit is troll repellant.
The problem comes when that troll has a dwarf buddy running point for him.
I've been in a game against a team composed entirely of dwarves and trolls and we got our butts kicked pretty thoroughly.

Smoke allows people to walk through Strangle? I didn't know that..
I also learned something on MajorNelson today. Apparently if you hold in the right trigger with the Rifle, you can do 3-shot bursts.

Re: Shadowrun
Found a new passion when I don't feel like trolling (lol?):
Elf | Katana | SMG
Res
Smoke
Teleport/Glider (depending on map)
Round 1: Res
Round 2: if ($>=3k){Smoke, Katana} else if ($>=2k){Smoke} else {Katana}
Round 3: buy what skills I need if money is over 3k (assuming I died and need katana again!)
Round 4+: own
I played for about 8 hours total yesterday using this configuration and never switched races once. (Yes, I became addicted and couldn't drop the controller, and yes, I did work a full 8 hours that day).

Re: Shadowrun
What I've been playing a lot of is a Human with Tree, Gust, wired Reflexes, SMG and a Katana and eventually Smartlink if money permits. I turn off smartlink at the start of the game so the red light doesn't give me away or when I'm prowling with the sword. I'll usually keep gust, smartlink and Wired Reflexes slotted and quickcast grenades (although I dislike using it since I find it a lot less accurate) and Tree of Life when needed.
Been playing this game pretty much non-stop for about a week now and I'm still finding shit out about it.
Did you know that you can actually use Gust to break a long fall and prevent damage? You ahve to time it right but try it out. It totally works. Saved my bacon 2-3 times.

I haven't tested it, but what I have been told is that if you turn smartlink off, it will still have the same effect but the laser will not be there.. I am sure that if that is the case, it's not supposed to be and will be fixed, but that's no reason to not take advantage of it while you can.

There's also a rumor about another race (Orc) but I'm still looking for solid details on that.

Re: Shadowrun
I love the game but there's so much about the game and Windows Live that is really starting to piss me off.
They want us to pay $9/month or $60 a year for a Gold membership when there is currently TWO games available for Vista users... and one of them is a port of a 3 year old shooter that they trying to sell for $60. Halo 2 on PC is a waste of money.
The volume balancing between voice chat on Live and Shadowrun is garbage. I have to turn the volume on all channels in the game down to 1 and the chat volume in live up to max before I can even hear anything.
Matchmaking is shit. Having to wait 3-5 minute before you can even connect to a game when you start playing or after you get disconnected is totally unacceptable for a pay service.
Shadowrun players on Vista are gimped. Weapon spray is larger, quick-cast is unintuitive, requires mouse navigation through menus and cannot be macro'd.
Being forced to sit through 32 seconds worth of splash screens is ridiculous.
The dedicated servers available to Vista users with a Silver membership are a joke. Sometimes you can't even get into a game.

Re: Shadowrun
ONE OF THE FIRST games released to be played only under Microsoft's Windows Vista, has been cracked to play on a legacy operating system known as Windows XP.
The infamous warez and hacking group 'Razor1911' has successfully hacked Shadowrun to be played under XP, without any need for DirectX 10.
Apparently the crack just demands that you overwrite a few files in the installation folder with the ones provided by Razor and the game will run happily under XP.
The information text file that ships with the crack states: "Tired of waiting for Falling Leaf to produce drivers so that you can play Shadowrun in XP? The wait is over, because Razor1911 already has the remedy! Yes, you read right. This game will also function in Windows XP".
Falling Leaf Studios had previously reported that they were working on the 'Alky Project' that would contribute 'Alky Compatibility Libraries' to allow the successful running of Halo 2 and Shadowrun on Windows XP machines.

I would not recommend the game on the PC per my previous comments. I regret buying that version, although I do not regret my other purchases on that day (Vista and a new video card). I have thought about grabbing a 360 version, but I refuse to pay for both. Everything I have heard while talking to friends that have the 360 version is positive. It sounds like the majority of the issues are PC specific which sucks. Oh, and the dedicated "silver" servers are no better than the "gold" servers from what I have seen. Both suck ass.

ROFL! that was awesome Miir.
Sorry I couldn't stick around last night. Needed to get some sleep in a bad way.
Here's a question for the folks playing on Vista, do you prefer receiving messages by text or are voice messages ok? Text messages are painfully slow on the controller so I usually prefer sending voice, however if that's an inconveniance, I sound really faint or am hard to understand I will send out text messages.

Re: Shadowrun
I play on both. I just bought Shadowrun for the PC because that's where I prefer my FPS games. I never received any messages while on the PC, but I have a keyboard hooked up to my 360 to handle messages there. Messages weren't a big deal until they let everyone on my messenger list see when I was online on LIVE. Now I get messages from all of the people who never see me online (rarely use Messenger).

Re: Shadowrun
Voice messages can be really difficult for me to hear, especially after my wife goes to sleep.
I have the volume balanced so that I can just hear other players enough in game when I have the volume cranked to normal level. I still have issues hearing others during a firefight.
The voice message you sent me last night was pretty garbled and mumbly.
I prefer text if you're gonna send me a message. Use shorthand if thats easier.. after playing MMOGs for so long I'm extremely fluent in typo and all sorts of internet shorthand/lingo.
I have the volume balanced so that I can just hear other players enough in game when I have the volume cranked to normal level. I still have issues hearing others during a firefight.

I'm too lazy to look if you've already posted it.
My current favorite setup is:
Troll (as usual).
1) Tree
2) Gust
3) Minigun
4) Smartlink
5) Res or Strangle
Depending on how much cash I have, I'll often pick up a SMG in round 2.
Gust is just too uber not to have.
Being so slow (as a troll) it's important to keep those pesky ninjas and dwarves away.
Next to strangle, it can't be beat for defending the extraction point.
It frustrates other players into doing stupid and careless things.
Blowing grenades back to their thrower.
Punting enemy corpses over the edge is a lot quicker than destroying them.
Piling up teammate corpses for multi res.
Choking off tunnels and doorways.
Blowhard is the one of the coolest achievements.

With that setup I'm most often at or near the top in score. I don't rack up a ton of kills but my teamplay points are usually number 1.

It has been a while since I posted it, and I think I have actually cleaned my list a couple times since then.miir wrote:What's your gamertag?Boogahz wrote:I play on both. When I play Shadowrun, I have used Dwarf: Summon, Anti-Magic Grenades, Smartlink (hate pumping rounds into my own summoned critter). I will sometimes grab teleport as well for jumping into rooms to drop a demon and then popping back out. I think my favorite tactic would be rushing trolls with a katana. It seems to work well since I drain the troll's essence as well.

Re: Shadowrun
I toyeed AM grenades last night and realised that they are extremely easy to quickcast on the 360, just 1 away from the normal grenades. I tossed an AM grenades at a troll hiding behind a tree and it sucked the tree out of the way and completely killed that Troll's hardening ability making it a very easy kill for me.
I scored my Elf Killer and Dwarf Scourge achievements the last 2 nights. Yay me.
