I just saw it and think it was really well done. It's definitely one of my favorites ST:TOS movies now. I really appreciated how good the choice of actors were and how well they played the parts. You can tell the actors did some research into the old characters, even Kirk who was played a bit differently than Shatner, but even then the Shatner version looked somewhat mixed in there with this new one. It's probably attributed more to the writing as they show a different side of Kirk. I think Bones was probably the best.

and one needless large creature chase scene (there really was no reason for those beast chasing scenes) but other than that, stupendous and even those moments didnt detract from the movie, they just could have been cut.

Well they did lead into him running into the cave and having Spock save him. Would you rather he just be walking around and just magically find the cave. At least with the creature chase, you can give a specific course of events that lead him into the cave rather than just showing up in it. Even Spock being there was given a completely realistic reasoning, to watch his plant die. So it's only understandable that they would give some reasonable reason for Kirk to run into Spock.

Saw this last night and I'm still excited. They did an incredible job with this, especially casting. Definitely contends with Kahn for best ever.

The only reason I won't say this is better than Kahn is basically cause I'm putting those in a separate category, just as I won't say Kahn is better than the new one. Kahn is a classic. But besides that, the new one kicks so much fkn ass and I wish the studio much success with future movies as long as they keep the cast the same :)

After much deliberation and seeing it multiple times, I have to conclude that this movie is better than Khan, if only by a small amount. Both movies re-ignited the franchise after it was all but dead and brought in outside writers and directors to do the job. Both had descent villians and great acting/dialog. This movie was more ambitious, as it reimaged things while keeping true to the source material, and the actors had a harder job, namely representing these established characters without degenerating into characatures/parodies of them. When I watched this movie each time, there was never any sense of boredom or "wait for the next big scene" feeling, despite its 2 hour run length. Even Dark Knight had me waiting for Ledger to come back on screen at points, but this movie was full speed from start to finish. While the entire cast were standouts, Karl Urban gets special praise from me for nailing McKoy perfectly in a role completely counter to what he normally does.

My only real criticisms of the movie: The shakey cam, while tolerable on the Imax screen, would probably be really annoying on a regular screen. Please for the love of christ someone end this trend in filmaking, I would rather have noticible CGI over Mr Epileptic Camera Guy. Second, the woman playing Uhura was kind of flat, but that probably had more to due with how much pure awesome she was surrounded by in the cast. Bonus points for Jungle Fever Spock, though....
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Not being a Star Trek fan, I didn't have any expectations aside from Simon Pegg being superawesomeface.

I really enjoyed it despite a few script flaws and one needless use of CGI.

Otherwise, excellent cast, brief story and excitement. 8/10 and going to buy it on blu ray.

I had been meaning to see this. But it's no longer at imax as it has been replaced with the Night at the Museum sequel so... Guess that's a pass. The first one was ok not sure that it's really imax worthy though!

Yeah, I was kind of bummed that Night at the Museum bumped it from IMAX. However, I saw this on Memorial Day and highly enjoyed it. Even my girlfriend, who has never seen any Star Trek or even Star Wars, liked it and she usually looks forward to movies like "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" (which I f'ing hope she goes to see with a girlfriend so I don't have to go).

I thought it was pretty solid. Liked it more than I expected to.

Kirk and Spock were both phenomenal. Really, the whole cast was good; the acting was the strong point of the movie, I thought.

I'm excited to see where they go from here, now that they've got everything set up. Could be some really interesting ones coming up.

Minor nitpick: Too many weird aliens. I like the fact that most of the aliens in Trek have been very humanoid. Even though it's sci-fi, Star Trek is still fundamentally about an exploration of humanity. Leave the crazy beast chases and weird aliens in bars to Star Wars.
