I like how this thread is now about Kyoukan and Noel getting married, rather than the truth. Reality is fucking boring anyway!
So I guess congrats to Noel and Kyoukan! Please to be naming your firstborn Veeshan!

with all due respect, if you pay $5K for a half carat you got taken to the freakin woodshed.Pherr the Dorf wrote:http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/Produc ... 1&start=30
That ring there, with a half carat like this
http://www.adiamor.com/D-1432431.htm
A perfect half carat in a tension setting... stunning!
Edit to add: Probably about $4750 too
Wholesale price on a 1 ct. weight E color diamond is around $4K. You can buy a very nice 1.33 ct diamond for around $6K. a lot of jewelers will cut their margins dramatically on engagement rings to get your business, so negotiate aggressively. The engagement ring is the "gateway drug" of jewelry
Buying the most perfect quality half carat diamond makes no sense either. Since most people dont look at women's rings with a microscope, you are much better off increasing the bling factor (size). Even with inclusions that are visible to the naked eye, you can often cover them with a post from the mounting so you can skimp on clarity there as well.
those are just my personal opinions, but diamonds are something you can absolutely negotiate on, and you should be extremely thorough shopping from jeweler to jeweler. If somebody treats you poorly don't give them your money. the only retailer i went to that could match the ultimate place i got a ring (wholesaler through family friend) was a high end jeweler, so you shouldnt rule those out either.
anyway, that's my soap box on this subject =)
it takes millions of years of heat and pressure for carbon matter to compress into a diamond, which is not only the strongest bonding known to man, but also pretty to look at. the symbolic value of such a thing can't be just shrugged off as a waste of money. the only thing that really makes them not that great of a deal is the fact that diamonds are exponentially more common than the diamond consortiums that own the mines in africa (and to a lesser extent, in canada and south america) want you to think.Ennia wrote:diamonds are a waste of money
take that 5k and get yourselves (you and wife) something you can enjoy together
I'm not into blingin jewelry. in fact the only jewelry I really own are my wedding and engagement rings, and even still I value them beyond just about anything else I own. I would not call them a waste of money at all.
most jewelers don't make a profit off the materials (the stones and metals) that go into making a piece of jewelry. they make their profits off the craftmanship, and their name/reputation. it does pay to shop around and it does really not benefit you much to buy your stuff at a place that advertises discount diamond prices.

While yes you don't need a d color and excellent all around diamond, maybe it's just me but 5k isn't really very much money to spend on a symbol of a lifetime. Alos more then half that cost is for the tension setting you do realize, if you are going to spend 2200 on a diamond, as was listed before the diamond sold, put it in a setting that will get attention (mind you there are specifics for tension settings that do raise the price of the gemstone). A tension setting is simply the best way to display a stone, there are no prongs, it just seems to float there... if you have seen one you know what I mean.

Wait a second. I thought Kyo was from Canada not Taiwan. When are you two getting married?
The diamond you are wearing was probably smuggled out of the mines in the ass of a poor aids ridden soul who died delivering that rock.
Spending so much money on a rock is not the best way to start off a life together. Who wants to start off in debt?

I picked my girlfriend partly based on her disinterest in diamonds.
One prerequisite of going out with me is that you can't be so stupid that you're impressed by shiney rocks.
EDIT: Also, she beat me at Soul Calibur, and I need to keep her around so I can one day avenge that loss.

Tell me if this statement is true when you are officially married. I love my wife, she was very low mantainence when we were dating. As my income grew so did her love of more expensive things.I picked my girlfriend partly based on her disinterest in diamonds.
Too her credit, I tool her to the store last year to buy a ring for our 10th anniversary and she did not pick the most expensive ring.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon
my wife would have been happy to have any ring i could have given her. I didnt make a lot of money when i asked her to marry me, but i think buying a woman a nice engagement ring that she will wear for the rest of her life is not a waste of money.
yes the diamond industry is/has been responsible for brutality upon Africans for centuries. so i guess it sucks in that regard. One jeweler i know of here in Atlanta actually doesn't go through DeBeers to get their diamonds, and buys directly from independent small mines in South Africa.
So not every diamond has made its way to market with somebody's blood on it. But it is fair to be critical of that industry - let alone the artificial prices due to the cartel's control.

Stop yer whining bike boy. Seems you were able to finally piss off the entire female population of the Continental USA and had to go off shore for a bride. No shame in that. My wife is the one that does our budgets. She knows exactly where we are financially all the time and absolutly hates being in debt(it stresses her out major). We had been together for something like 6 or 7 years when we got engaged and she picked out her own ring. It's real diamonds (Canadian I believe).
I offered to have it upgraded down the line when finances would get better but she's attached to the ring itself and what it represents, not the rock imbedded in the ring.

If heat and pressure are all that is required you could reduce the amount of time required considerably by stuffing a lump of coal up dregors ass.kyoukan wrote:it takes millions of years of heat and pressure for carbon matter to compress into a diamond,Ennia wrote:diamonds are a waste of money

The extreme weight and heat would produce a diamond in mere seconds.

It may take a day or two longer, but you could probably also get one by shoving a lump of coal in Atokal's ear. Apparently the gears were really turning for the two-and-a-half days it took him to come up with that zinger, so the pressure is definitely there. I'm guessing from the beads of sweat that were glistening on his hairless cranium that you would also have the required heat to produce a flawless diamond.
The four c's that Atokal looks for are childlike, cherubic, cootie-free and (no) criers.
