Guns however are a tool and have been primarily a tool since their creation. And just like every other tool, it can be used as a weapon as well.

Tool :

Weapon :
An instrument of attack or defense in combat, as a gun, missile, or sword.

Gun :
A weapon consisting of a metal tube from which a projectile is fired at high velocity into a relatively flat trajectory.

Guns are weapons.
They were originally created to make things dead.

I have a number of tools on my desk at the moment.
A wire stripper... I suppose that could be used as a weapon but it would be far less effective than your fist or foot. RJ45 crimper... Not by any stretch of the imagination could it be used as a weapon. If someone tried to use my Fluke as a weapon I'd be tempted to use a real weapon on them. I suppose I could call my USB data key a tool as well... but not a weapon.

The old weapon/tool doubletalk is just NRA propaganda.

Sure a gun is a weapon but it is also a "tool of trade" for hunters etc.

This topic could be argued for a long time, and it looks like it will be.

Perhaps people should start killing folks with a fishing pole, then we can make that a weapon too. Hell, it's also a tool to make things dead.

What's to argue?
The definitions are pretty precise.

Axe : A tool with a bladed, usually heavy head mounted crosswise on a handle, used for felling trees or chopping wood.

Chainsaw : A portable power saw with teeth linked in an endless chain
Saw : Any of various tools, either hand-operated or power-driven, having a thin metal blade or disk with a sharp, usually toothed edge, used for cutting wood, metal, or other hard materials.

Those two items were created to serve a specific purpose which doesn't involve killing. Besides killing, what purpose does a gun serve?

Are they a 'tool of the trade' for soldiers, assassins and angry postal carriers?

The hunting argument would be valid if not for the vast majority of guns that have been made for the strict purpose of warfare (ie: killing other people). I suppose you could try to argue that it is possible to hunt with a gatling gun, anti-aircraft gun, assault rifle or a handgun but you wouldn't be taken seriously.

You are missing my point. I just fail to see where guns are a bad thing and was trying to point out that it could possibly be viewed as a tool to the right profession.

lets make things easy....a gun is a TOOL thats used for KILLING, everyone happy now?
although if you point a handgun at someone for self defense you rarely have to fire it, so its also a tool for scaring petty criminals

Yes, multiples. handguns, rifles, & shotguns. Growing up in my home I was surrounded by guns and taught to fear and respect their strength.
As a dealer in rare coins, bullion, jewelry and other goodies, I keep a pistol on me or within easy reach most of the time, especially when I'm in the shop or travelling to/from shows.
Conservative.
