Wow...I think her definition of a "casual gamer" differs greatly from what one really is...

What I mean is, I've never heard a casual gamer (by my definition) say that controls for a FPS were difficult...

That reporter seemed pretty clueless on computer gaming in general. She tried to write like she knew what she was talking about but it was obvious she had no clue.

She also used the word "newbie".

She seemed to be making up things as she went along.

While I don't expect most reporters to know EQ as good as the people in this forum do.....I would expect her to know a bit more.

You have to keep in mind her experience with EQ and on-line games in general seem to be limited only to an interview and tour of the facilities.

Pretty week for a tech writer, I mean if your going to be a journalist in the tech industry you should be interested in it, and that should include some amount of computer gaming when your given an assignment such as this one.

I would have hated to be the guy she was interviewing...
"so it's like medevial times?"
"like lord of the rings?"
"Wow, people 'act' here?"
She must have been as much fun as explaining an on-line game to your grandma....you know where they obviously just don't get it...and never will.

plus she didn't mention Guides at all :( We do the same stuff as GM's (at least the stuff she mentioned in the article) She is teh suck!

And her comment that the average player plays for 10 months suprised me, because most of the people I know have played for years. Curious, how long are you/did you play?

Since release. The vast majority of my in-game friends no longer play. I have no in-game relations to anyone that has played as long or longer than me. I have no intentions of quitting anytime soon. Especially since my GF's necro is in her 50's and we play together all the time now :)

Btw, this deserves it's own thread.

From the start of Beta 3 through this feburary when I quit.

And I was pretty hardcore...65 clr 155 AA, 65 enc 35 AA...and other characters...and I spent the majority of my time on raids actually losing exp, not gaining it. I didn't even make the cleric until right before velious.

I discovered, Sony pays its support staff to appear "in game" as actors, where they not only answer technical questions but also rally players to slay dragons and embark on adventures requiring teamwork.
yeah, GM events, how often do we see these? only one on veeshan i can think of was the holloween event, same every year, and when saiphos came back for a guildwar in EC...that was kinda fun but it only lasted for about 3mins :(

Many new products of both types (console and PC) are from companies hungrily eyeing the revenue stream Sony Online Entertainment has built for EverQuest. The San Diego outfit, a division of Sony Pictures Digital Inc., doesn't disclose revenue, but some 500,000 EverQuest subscribers are paying $12.95 monthly, and company executives have said they expect to break even sometime this year.
Break even on what? the development and maintenence costs of this game have been in the green for years.... maybe Sony is breaking even on aquiring Verant.....

"We try to answer without giving away too much, because part of the fun of the game is figuring it out yourself," said Patrick Cirelli, a lanky supervisor who was walking the aisles in blue denim shorts that revealed a Tigger tattoo on his right leg.
like this description is really relevant to the article? I sooo wanted to know what he was wearing, and that he has a tattoo.

heh I think she is substituting the word 'actor' for 'character.'

All in all a vapid, pointless, and uninformed article. At least the misguided reports of EQ addiction are slightly entertaining.

My own frustrating test of PlanetSide convinced me of two things. First, these games are still so darn hard to learn that they aren't much fun for the casual gamer, and so I don't see them being ready for the mass market quite yet.
Good lord you must be stupid. EQ was not all that hard to figure out. Its even easier these days. I can even keep those damn "hints/tips" shit closed most of the time I log on a new character. I dont want the game to be available to the mass market. I am tired of fucking ten year old players and the such. I understand they want the largest amount of players/subscribers they can get to increase the size of their wallets, but come on. That or increase the number of servers so the retard level is a little spread out.
