You are what you eat

I usually like to reheat leftovers for lunch, but I also bring in low-sodium cold cut sandwiches as well. And always a piece of fruit, at least two a day for work, one around 10 for a snack and the other w/ lunch.
I can't possibly see maintaining a real excercise program w/out any kind of carbs. I can't run anywhere near my mile times that I was doing in college but I'm actually very close to my 10k times. I have no idea where my energy would come from w/out eating any kind of carbs. The problem is getting enough of the right kind.
One of the things I noticed as well is that so many people don't drink enough water. i forget what it was about water that helps regulate weight however.

Quizno's isn't fast food, its a deli. And it doesn't have fries on the menue.Rasspotari wrote:i never knew fast food was supposed to be good for yaAranuil wrote:Quiznos has maybe two subs on the entire menu that are even remotely good for you, and they are extremely overpriced.
it´s fast , it comes with a napkin, no washing up ,you can get fries with it, you can get at a drivethrough and toss the remains into a garbage can when you´re done.
fruits, dark bread with veggies on them, oj , cider or water = da good healthy snacks/quick meals

I'm aware of that and have the specific details already but thanks!Kindo wrote:The majority of that is the dressing. Wendy's Mandarin Chicken Salad, for example, rings in at 590 calories, 34.5 grams of fat, 50 grams of carbs, 26g of protein. That's just marginally worse for you than 3 tacos from Taco Bell!
But the majority of people who eat a salad, eat it with the dressing provided. You could just as easily argue that well shit those tacos count the cheese - well duh, it is part of the package.
Salad can be healthier, but not with the dressing and additions that are often included and consumed.

Ash, I know that feeling. If I could just lease out my metabolism, I'd never have to work another day in my life. Hell, my brother is 15 (10 years younger than I), 6' 5" (inch taller) and weighs 155 (15 lbs heavier). I'd be happy to be like...oh...160 or something. *sighs*

You'll have absolutely no problems attaining that goal once your body fully matures somewhere in your early twenties. That about sums it up, my metabolism is insane, I CANT GAIN WEIGHT. My friends (mostly the girls) are always talking about trying to lose weight and all that shit and all I want is to put on like 15 lbs .
I used to be able to eat 3 or 4 Big Macs per meal while in HS and not put on a single pound. For those people wondering how I could stuff such nasty fucking shit into my body.....well.....you'd have to be restricted to eating nothing but my mother's cooking for your entire life up to that point before you could understand. Keep up that diet for the next 5 or so years and you'll soon be yet another statistic to support the USA's claim as the fattest country in the world.

I remember when I was in Water Polo in High School, going to McDonalds and ordering, two Big Macs, 6 Piece Chicken McNuggets, Large Fries, Large Chocolate Shake, Sundae, Cone, and a Super-sized Coke. Back then I was burning calories like they were nothing, and never gained an ounce of weight. I've gone from a 28 inch waist to around a 31 inch waist, so I'm not doing horribly, but back then I didn't have to excercise to maintain that, and now I do.Kelgar wrote:You'll have absolutely no problems attaining that goal once your body fully matures somewhere in your early twenties. That about sums it up, my metabolism is insane, I CANT GAIN WEIGHT. Kylere do I know those twins?
Anyway Asheran, I used to be just like you.....I used to set records in HS for how much I ate....I'd usually get 2-3 full lunches down in 20 mins, but if I was trying I'd down 6-7 of them.
I graduated HS at 120lbs.
But that all changed when I got older, for me it changed at age 22....My metabolism isn't bad, but it's normal now....I imagine most people suffer this as they get older.
I actually read an article that stated that the human body learns to be more efficent at it's tasks as you get older so you burn less calories for the same amount of work....that sucks ass...That means I'm going to have a real hard time in 30 years from not being a 800 lb blob of jello.

Ha ha! Braggart! not entirly true. im the same way, i can eat all the junk i want to and sit in front of this pc all day and not gain weight. because that is how my body is. perhaps after i have kids it will change but as of now i don't gain any weight. This was up til last year. Now with doing massages everyday its turning to muscle but still can eat as much as i want with no worries.Rasspotari wrote:how old are you ash ?Asheran Mojomaster wrote:I think fat people are fat and skinny people are skinny not because of what they eat but just cause their body was built that way (well in general that is, I know a lot of people are fat cause they are lazy and eat a lot). Take me for example, I'm 5'10'' and 130 lbs yet I eat constantly every day and sit on my ass 5 days a week (2 days I actually go to the gym but that only started like 4 months ago and I was skinny before that too). If I go to taco bell I get 2 Steak Gorditas and 2 Nacho Cheese Chalupas...and ya know what an hour later I'm snacking on something again, like a bowl of ice cream or some shit like that, I JUST CANT GAIN WEIGHT, all that calorie bullshit is stupid.
If the average man burns 2800 calories a day, you still have to take in their body type, cause my RL friend who is 5'6'' and weighs 300 lbs prolly burns a shitload of calories a day, he is working and doing other things all day long, and he eats ALMOST NOTHING yet he keeps gaining weight, while I eat, eat, eat, sit on my ass, and look at porn all day and yet I am actually LOSING weight, I dropped 5 lbs in last 2 weeks, I dunno why!
To sum everything I just said up, its 2 AM ,I am fucking tired and I'm losing weight for no reason, and by the time I wake up in the morning none of this I wrote will make sense to me and prolly doesnt make sense to you now. Now I am gonna go to bed before I make myself look like an even bigger idiot by rambling on and on and making no sense. Kthxla night!
the "just built that way" is 99 % bs, it´s how old you are + what you eat + how often you eat + how much you move(exercise). that will determine your weight.
I want to cast...........MAGIC MISSLE!
damnit man... i hate reading this haha. I go to taco bell occasionally and get a 7 layer burrito, grilled stuff burrito, and large soda. so theres about my entire daily intake for everything bad for you, in one delicious package
. Since im 16 and have an active job out in the sun, luckily that shit hasnt gotten to me yet though! =p
I declare good tasting food should not be bad for you, because if i felt motivated to, i could kill myself by eating good food in a week

As far as eating massive quantities go, our track team could put it down but (used to eat an entire large pizza myself eating 2 slices at a time by sandwiching them) the scariest thing to watch was my high school swim team. They weren't just thin, they had 0 fat. I don't even remember the specifics of what they used to put down, but the whole multiple big mac thing seems to be on target.

I can't eat much fast food anymore. All the greasy burgers just give heartburn and diarrhea.
I always found it funny to walk into McDonalds and see some 400 pound fat chick order 3 big mac meals and top it off with a Diet Coke.
For those of you who do something similar, you should know that the Diet Drinks commonly contain an ingredient called Aspartame. Do an internet search and you will see what kind of nasty shit this is. Studies have shown (sorry no references) that aspartame can lower a person's metabolism and cause lots of mood swings etc. I won't drink diet sodas anymore. http://www.Aspartame.com is kind of a disjumbled site but they have links to a lot of different studies and articles.

It's not hard when you're running 3 miles a day, doing all manner of weighlifting, and swimming god knows how many miles. Not to mention passing around tables and shortened telephone poles while treading water. To this day, FUCK the treading drills. Fuck them in the fucking ear... with a cacti!Sirensa wrote:OMG! Even if they do slow the metabolism down, you probably still end up with less excess calories at the end of the day since diet soda has 0 calories...one diet soda couldn't possibly slow your metabolism down 150 calories to catch up with regular soda.
Now go read up on something called obesity and look at it's side effects, regular soda contains that. It shortens your life span significantly, makes it hard to do almost anything, you sweat lots, women dislike looking at fat, I've even read things about obesity affecting memory adversly.
Everything has pro's and con's.....your looking at aspartame semi-correctly by weighing the pros and cons...but your forgetting to include the pros and cons of regular soda and the fatness it helps cause and then comparing the two.

Give me sugar, thanks! I don't eat anything with Nutrasweet/Aspartame/Phenwhatever. A typical can of soda is 150-170. Hardly enough to significantly shorten a life span and cause wide-spread obesity. Now go read up on something called obesity and look at it's side effects, regular soda contains that. I disagree, I actually like Diet Coke more than any other kind of pop. (Yes, pop, I'm from Michigan) Regular pop is too sweet and makes me feel kind of "blah" if I have too much of it. Hopefully the Nutrasweet or whatever won't cause tumors when I'm older.Aslanna wrote:Not to mention diet soda tastes like crap.

Det soda tastes better then regular soda once you get used to it....regular soda is syrupy.
There are some exceptions, a major one being Mountain Dew....Diet Mountain Dew is not as good as regular.
As for a can of soda only being 150-170 calories and not causing obesity...
How many soda's do people here drink? My guess is MANY VV readers probably drink the equivelent of 6 or more a day. (Note: a 32oz soft drink is roughly 3 soda's) 6 soda's would be more like 900 calories and 900 calories a day is plenty of time to spend on the treadmill.
Go to the gym and see how long 900 calories takes to burn off on the bike and treadmill, then ask yourself if you want to do that everyday. I know I don't....900 calories on a treadmill is probably 90 minutes. Maybe 120 on a bike. 2 fucking hours a day because you wanted regular soda? I don't think so...
If your having a hard time controlling your weight, you drink diet soda because aspartame can't be nearly as bad as the effects of 900 calories of sugar a day. I think that's pretty damn obvious to anyone who knows shit about nutrition.

after hitting my mid-thirties I realized that each time I went shopping I was buying a tad bit larger waist size each time. I am not a diet fad type of person. I used to exercise regularly but the past few years I put that activity aside.
Eight months ago I decided to join the Y and kick start my weight lifting and aerobic workouts with the atkins diets. I started at 265 and am now down to 200. Considering the fact that I am working the weights about an hour four times a week and doing at least 30 minutes a day of some form of aerobic exercise, I am very pleased with the results. Atkins has done wonders for my blood pressure and for my blood sugar levels. I am concerned with the long term effects of Atkins so I am beginning to figure out what I will do when I end the program.
Suffice to say probably any diet will work if you stick to it and join it with a good workout plan. I probably would have lost the weight by just eating a diet with moderate carb intake, but I was concerned about my blood sugar levels and blood pressure. With atkins both have reduced to well withing optimal levels.
So, for me I cannot eat anymore of the fast food. It is a pain at first having to put thought into planning meals for a week, but ya get used to it after a while. Just have to defend my atkins plan

You might want to try the Propel 'Fitness Water' from Gatorade. It tastes great, comes in multiple flavors, is extremely low calorie (don't kill me if I'm wrong, but I think it's like 40 calories per bottle), and it has some antioxidants and vitamins added, so it's reasonably good for you.Calixte wrote:My favorite diet soda is Diet Pepsi. It's definitely one of the better tasting ones I've tried.
On average, I'd say I drink 1-2 a day. I try to drink water more than anything else, but I get so damn tired of it.
Edit: 10 calories per 8 ounces, and fortified with vitamins B, C, and E.

I have the same condition Taly does. I do exersize rather vigorously, but have not gained a pound in 4 years.
What is really sick is a few months back I calculated my cal intake. I eat like a damned pig, attempting even vainly to gain 1 lb. over the constant buck fifty I am. Through the period of an "average" week I consume over 30000 calories.
/ducks
Edit to this: Excuse me, 30000 Cal + on the "OMFG eat the world" diet I have subjected myself to. I hate food

I had a friend who was like that Acies. What he did, is he would eat his meals normally, and then drink a specialized drink that was similar to slim-fast with it to supplement his calorie intake. I don't recommend slim-fast because it's got incredible amounts of sugar, but if you go to you local GNC, they can probably hook you up with something similar.
Having met you, I'd venture a guess that even with that it will be hard for you to gain weight because you seem to have an extremely fast metabolism, but if it's something that bothers you you might want to give it a try.

Oh, I am not very self-concious about my weight, but would like to perhaps gain more muscle mass (maybe an additional 15-30 lbs. as a target area).Aranuil wrote:I had a friend who was like that Acies. Frankly, I just want it to slow down so I can quit stuffing my face with food continually. You are completely correct on your guess about my metabolism. Also, a few specialists I have been to did some other analysis and said that my adrenal gland contributes, as it has some freaking annoying defects.
I tried that 2000 Cal weightgainer at GNC, you know, the milkshakes stuff. Used to mix the powder with Ice Cream, two eggs and some milk. It was a no go

Then you need to qualify such statements iniitally. Your initial post seemed to be saying diet soda is better for you regardless of how much you drink. Considering we don't know the long term affects of Aspartame I'm going to have to continue to disagree. As for a can of soda only being 150-170 calories and not causing obesity...
How many soda's do people here drink?
As for stuff not tasting bad once you "get used to it". Fuck that. I know what I like and dislike. I'm not going to brainwash myself into thinking some foul tasting liquid is actually 'not bad'. Especially when it's flavored with that same mystery chemical.
But it's like cigarettes. I'm not going to tell anyone else not to consume those products. If people want to enjoy a refreshing diet beverage that's up to them. We'll see if people are suing Pepsi and Coke 20 years from now once Nutrasweet's affects have been proven.

I didn't say diet coke makes you skinny, I said cutting out a needless 300-900 calories a day out of your diet no matter what will make you lose weight (or atleast gain it at a slower pace).
It just so happens that 300-900 calories equals 2-6 regular soda's.
Hey guess what..3 cans of coke has almost as many calories as a BIG MAC. Yeah, that's right....cut a big mac or 2 out of your calories and it has a effect.
It's even better for you to drink water instead of diet soda......way better. But let's face it....most people don't want to drink water. I'm personally switching to water...I'm about 60/40 split water/diet soda ATM.
As for people won't drink stuff to get used to it....that's a bad excuse...how many people liked beer the first time they drank it? How many people liked cigarettes the first drag they took? People do stuff they don't like all the time and some of the habits grow on them.
I just wish I would grow to like exercise more, I enjoy going to the gym once a week, but 3x requires motivation.
Cutting beer from your diet if you drink regularly will have a decent effect also...I stopped drinking beer for the most part. For awhile I was averaging 36 beers a month...now it's more like...12...I don't drink except for special occassions now, not even the 1-2 beer social drink (why drink empty calories unless you plan on experiencing the side effects? AKA buzz)
People always say things like "watch what you eat" or "you are what you eat"....what you drink is important too...but people don't even think about it.
"Man I want a candy bar"
"Wait a sec I'm trying to lose weight"
"I'll just grab a soda then"
bad idea.....

You're starting to remind me of the Chewlies sales representative in Clerks. There's nothing anybody can say to me to make me start drinking diet soda. However, if people are drinking 6-7 (or more) sodas a day, I think they should be doing more than switching to the Diet variety.Hey guess what..3 cans of coke has almost as many calories as a BIG MAC. Yeah, that's right....cut a big mac or 2 out of your calories and it has a effect.
As anyone who knows anything about nutrion is aware, there's more to it than calories.

I agree on both accounts....Aslanna wrote:However, if people are drinking 6-7 (or more) sodas a day, I think they should be doing more than switching to the Diet variety.

I just think that's a large first step, not many people have that kind of will power. I mean most people if they think "Mmmm Chocolate" they go get Chocolate...even if they are 50lbs overweight and are about to go out to eat. Then when they are out eating they go get the fried foods etc anyway, and they don't have the willpower to go to the gym.
However maybe they can make a couple baby steps in the right direction....Instead of the Wendy's Spicy Chiken Sandwich meal biggie sized with a regular coke.....maybe they can get a grilled chicken sandwich with cajun spices regular fries and a diet soda? Sure it tastes a little different...but it's similar right?
In a perfect world we would all eat like plants and probably bugs (bugs are high in protein!!) but that's a bit too much to ask also...I'm trying to show people the reasons to change while leaving thier lifestyle semi-intact.
It's a lot harder to stick to an extreme diet over a long period....but minor changes you can live with.

I mean here let me show you why even diet coke is bad....
1. Aspartame is still bad for you.....just probably the lesser of the two evils.
2. Aluminum is rumored to cause alzheimers...although they think the aluminum in cans is safe...
3. The salts in soda make you retain water I think...
4. Caffeine is bad for you for numerous reasons.
5. I think whether is has sugar or not it still really helps cause tooth decay...the dentist said something about the acids and sugar...I dunno, but I assume even the diet soda causes issues.
6. Doesn't it help cause ulcers too?
7. Ever try doing anything active after you drink a soda? With your stomach all bloated with carbonation? Obviously it just makes you feel ill when you work out.
That's a decent size list.....
But I highly doubt anyone is going to stop drinking soda because they read this thread, I was just hoping people would switch to diet soda....because that's easier to do and has a more visible effect on thier body.
I'm not here because I own stock in an all-diet soft drink company....
