Bit Torrent info

Post by kyoukan »

Okay, I'm going to test this out and see if it works.

BitTorrent is a file transfer app that uses a technology called file swarming. Unlike other file sharing apps like Kazaa or Napster there is no gay client/browser to fuck around with and you don't need to make an account or anything.

How it works is you download and install the client. Once you double click to install it, it goes right into your shell and automagically detects .torrent files when you click on them via a web browser or double click on a .torrent file from windows.

BitTorrent shares bandwidth with everyone who is getting the file, and it doesn't grab it in a linear order like other file transfer clients, but it builds the file onto your HD instantly when you start a torrent and begins to grab little pieces of it from all over and starts to send out the little pieces you already have to everyone else. This way everyone downloading is also uploading and it takes away the neccesity to have the file sitting on a main server and everyone is getting it from the one source.

Some guidelines you have to follow in order to make this work are pretty simple. Anyone can download whatever I post; in fact the more people that are downloading, the more upload there will be and everyone will be all around faster, but I ask that once the file is finished downloading to please leave it going for a period of time at least as long as it took you to download it. So if a movie took you 4 hours to grab entirely, please leave the window open for 8 hours. That way there will be more bandwidth uploading and everyone can get done faster. Basically, if you end it right away and everybody does that, then no one will be able to download it once the initial people have gotten it.

Also, BitTorrent is pretty much designed to rape your maximum upload capabilities to make sure everyone is sharing as much as they can. As a general rule I leave my computer alone while BT is running because you can't do much on the net when your upload is being raped so hard. Generally I leave it running while I'm at work or sleeping or out with my fiance and aren't using the computer.

IMPORTANT: IF THE TORRENT YOU ARE TRYING TO DOWNLOAD DOESN'T WORK THEN TRY RIGHT CLICKING ON IT AND DOWNLOADING IT DIRECTLY TO YOUR HARD DESKTOP AND DOUBLE CLICKING ON IT FROM THERE. IF IT STILL DOESN'T WORK AND THE DATE ON THE POST THE FILE IS IN IS LESS THAN A FEW DAYS OLD THEN PRIVATE MESSAGE ME.

If you have a problem with getting crappy/no video or sound, you have to download the correct codecs to watch it. I suggest downloading and installing the Defiler Pack, which is just a bunch of the most commonly used and popular video and audio codecs.

Question: If I were to do this I would have to do it at work using my work computer. Will this render me unable to use this computer to do normal daily routines (like read the vault or download music :) )? Also, will this be a drain on the company server?

yeah it will be a drain on the company server.

dont download movies at work, especially if you work in a small office, your IT guy will be able to trace a massive spike to you and you could be fuckered, since you are breaking the law and all.

do as Kyo suggests and set up a download at home before work or bed.

Yeah we can't afford a drain on resources until we set up the new database server this weekend. Good thing I am that IT guy that would notice the spike. I just never heard of this type of downloading before.

That sure is an interesting method of downloading. I'll check it out tonight from home and see how it works.

That was an ... interesting movie. I'll have to watch it again I think, it was enjoyable. :)

That BitTorrent thing owns, too.

Ok, I need a bit of verification on how this works. I downloaded the windows installer, it said it installed successfully... but how do I tell that it's downloading, at what rate, etc? I have the file on my desktop, but its not getting any larger, just 56kb or somesuch. So, is there any way to tell this?

Right click on the file, and Open With.... then select btdownloadprefetch. You might need to search for it if it's not on the menu.

you might could save hundreds if all you need is HD space. you can just get a new HD.

Bubba,

Those are image files. Kinda like .cue and .bin You'll want to use Alcohol 120% to burn those to cd's http://www.alcohol-soft.com Alternately, you can mount the image to a drive using Daemon Tools. Their main website at http://www.daemon-tools.com seems to be down. But you can probably get them somewhere else.

Daemon Tools seems to work pretty well. Keep checking with the site, it goes up and down.

The thing to remember about BitTorrents is that they are seeded, i.e. hosted, by individual users. So, if no one with that particular file is online at that time, then no download for you. Don't fret, though; just leave the "tracker" window up overnight and most likely someone will re-seed it and you'll get your porn. Be patient, it may take a day or two. :)

On that note, try e-mule too. No idea what exactly it is...seems like a kazaa/napster type file share system. However, it has the unique advantage of allowing direct access to particular filenames. For example, I found a movie link on a website and just copy/pasted it into e-mule and away it went. Very resource friendly too.

Couple links for yah:

E-mule client: http://www.emuleplus.tk/

Bit torrent/E-mule site: http://www.packeting.tk

Bit-torrent site: http://www.torrentse.cx/ <-Cthuldan's seal of approval!

Thanks for the info folks. I downloaded both Alcohol 120 and Daemon Tools. I mounted the image on to cd's using the A120 and didn't have any problems...until I tried to play them. It just hangs on connecting. I am at a loss.

EDIT Sorry I should mention that I am using Windows Media Player 9.0
Is there any othe player out there that is better?

Use WinDVD4 once you have the virtual DVD drive mounted, Bubba. You can download it from Kazaa(and most likely others).

Thanks Can! I downloaded Kazaa Lite and found Windvd4 just before I left for work. Got home and it was ready to install. (anyone have a key for it so I don't have to worry about the trial period?) At first things didn't work with the cd's I mounted and I gave up for a bit. Just got back to it and it worked for about 10 minutes then all I got was sound and no video. That happened on both discs. Not sure what is up with that.

Question: I downloaded a few films like Daredevil and Tears of the Sun and they are all just a touch over 700mb for each disc. Are there cdr's over 700mb? If not is there anyway I can get these suckers to fit on a CD? Any editing gear out there that I can download to fix these things? Oh yeah they are in AVI format.

First off, thanks big time to Kyou for showing me the light--this stuff is incredible (real thanks to Bubba for calling me to tell me about it). http://www.bytemonsoon.com appears to be the best site I've found so far for getting torrents.

I'm watching "Reloaded" right now--just amazing. But most of all I'm just awed by the fact that I can read all the comics I've loved but sold in the past, thanks to these amazing downloads.

Bubba, I think this is our sign we need to buy a DVD burner. I think they're only like $100 for a good one now, and that at least will let you free up hard drive space by moving files.

Sorry about the bump, but just wanted to let everyone know about Soulseek. It's a nice little Kazaa/Napster-like program, except with queueing and some other little quirks. I like it. I'd try bit torrent but as I'm on a university server now I don't want to go eating upload and get nailed for it.

The last one will be shut down sept. 10th I think so get what you want from it while you can.

Suprnova is the best one I have found. Since they run purely off of mirrors there's several links, if 1 is down just try another.

http://www.suprnova.org
http://www.suprnova.tk <-- one I use the most, seems to be up most of the time
http://mbnet.fi/suprn0va/list_news.html
http://suprnova.web.siol.com

I think maybe once in the past several months have all of those been down simultaenously. If they are, just go to google and type in "suprnova" and try to find one that's about bit torrent.

Question about BitTOrrent files. I downloaded a game and all the files are called *.img, *.cue, *.ccd, *.sub, and then others called BIN files. They are unfamiliar to my system, in that they can't be opened by anything I have. Does anyone know what software I need to open these files types?

Alcohol 120% is great for burning as it will do many formats, including BIN/CUE.

I've heard that ISO buster can open *iso and *.bin files so that they can be browsed, and/or have their files extracted. I personally have *cough* no knowledge of this though.

PS format c: /u will set you free!
