WASHINGTON (AFP) - Homosexual employees of the US Department of Justice (news - web sites) have been forbidden to hold an annual "Gay Pride" event at the department's headquarters, a gay DoJ employee said Friday.

Attorney General John Ashcroft (news - web sites) "will not allow us to hold our annual pride ceremony in the building," said Melissa Schraibman, who works in Justice Department (news - web sites)'s tax division.

The Justice Department has held gay pride events at the Department headquarters annually since the early 1990s, when Bill Clinton (news - web sites) -- a gay rights supporter -- was president and Janet Reno (news - web sites) the US attorney general.

In 2002 Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson, the most important DoJ official after Ashcroft, was at the event. Thompson's presence however resulted in sharp criticism from influential conservative groups.

The event, organized by a group of gay employees known as the "DoJ Pride" -- using the acronym for the Department of Justice -- had been scheduled for June 18.

The group includes several hundred homosexual DoJ employees.

The cancellation "is definitely a surprise," Schraibman told AFP. All the preparations for the event, to be held in the Department's main hall, had already been finalized.

According to Schraibman, the prohibition is "in accord with a new department policy that prohibits commemoration unless it is supported by a presidential proclamation."

"This is something we have never heard of before," she said. "It doesn't exist in writing yet."

Schraibman said that other groups of DoJ employees -- including those belonging to ethnic or special interest groups -- continue to use the Department building as a meeting place.

"It's certainly a discriminatory position," Schraibman added.

A Department of Justice spokesman, contacted by AFP, refused Friday to comment on the issue.

The son of a Pentecostal preacher, Ashcroft has long been an outspoken social conservative, opposed to abortion and gay rights, and supporting the death penalty and few restrictions on gun ownership.

Wasn't it the Justice Dept who had Franklin Graham speak at their Easter service?

Well at any rate, this kind of thing is completely unacceptable. I'm tired of these religious conservatives using their positions in government to blur the line between church and state.

Homosexuals are one of the, if not the most, discriminated against people in America, as well as most of the world. Who gives a fuck if they're gay? The problem with that comment is, a lot of people do give a fuck, and not in a way that would be beneficial to homosexuals. Maybe this party is a way for them to feel good about themselves as it's one of the few official places they can come together and not worry about the thoughts and actions of those that would speak out against their preference. I think this cancellation is a big kick in the teeth for them, epecially:

No your wrong. Have you lived in Orlando? Every single school I had gone to I was the minority. Either it was 70% spanish, or 60% black along with the teachers. I knew how it feels to be the "fewly numbered". I can only recall a quiet a few times that my race played in to anything "bad" happening muchless good.

Its the point of having parades and "Gay Pride" parties I do not agree with. By no means do I hate or dislike gay people,but I dont like the fact they do indeed flaunt it,or try and push their ideas on people.Just like Ashcroft,he wants things how he wants it, he does it and ends up forcing his own "following gods rule" bullshit. Gay people have rallys to try and explain for themselves. When in point the world is around 80% really dont care if your gay, or not. They close downtown Orlando for a gay parade for 2 days. Why? I havent seen a " Ive fucked a white chick parade", or a " Im a white person parade". If that happend, it would be labled as racest,distasteful,white trashish. Yet black people can hold "million" man parades, and gays can have prades.

Your remark about women isnt totally on base. Not only have women entered the work force and have done a lot better than men in most areas. They also hold key positions, a majorty of the time in a work force.Or are a demanding presence in person. Maybe it really is diffrent up where you live, yet I havent seen where woman,or gays are held back or looked down on. I can understand the point where people dont think women dont belong in a area of work. My boss where I work is a woman, I get some guys who go to me and says " she doesnt know what shes talking about" but thats rarely.And 9 times out of 10, shes right and they are just wrong and I let them know that.

I can think of many things that aim at me, as a white middle classed male, and it has. It all goes around in some ways, by stupid ass people. Im just lucky they are the minioty. Seriously, if you dont feel good about yourself, because of the sex,color, or sexual prefrence is maybe you need to think of the reasons why you do somethings. ill close with one of my favorite stories, back when i first went to college, i was in a work/study program(it was a local expensive school)in the library the summer prior, there i met this girl and we would just shoot the shit,
i believe this was around affirmative actions high time, but she was telling me this story that happened to her father some years ago

her father owned some big factory of some kind or another, and the affirmative action people kept coming around asking him to stop work for a census, he kept telling them that they were too busy atm to do something like that
this went on for some time till they finally showed up with a court order
work was shut down, everyone filed out and was counted/etc...
at the end, her father asked the AA people if he had enough black people etc...
they told him he needed a minimum(i dont remember the exact numbers) of 25 employed there, he had 33 employeed,
he immidiately turned around, pointed to the last 8 that were counted, and simple said " youre fired "

in the quiet library backroom i almost stood up and cheered

I would only get mad at a gay pride parade if it was in my way of going somewhere. Other than that, I have never seen one, heard of one around me, or anything like that. So I could really give a shit about it. Now if I have to circumnavigate around the city just to get across the street be it for gay pride or girl scouts, I'll be pissed. You have an awfully broad view of what a discriminatory statement is. All I really said is that a middle class white male will never be able to understand what it's like to be truly discriminated against on a broad scale. The fact that a white went to a school where they were technically a minority at that school does not really mean very much. You can get out of that environment and go to another school, or you can just wait it out and graduate and then go back to the white male's world where you can get a job doing anything you want at any company you want without fearing that your race will be a factor your entire life. If you are a racial minority, you can't get away from that.

my fiance is black, he is jamacain and haitan. he has led a very priviledged life in a country where minorities aren't discriminated against nearly as much as they are in the USA and Europe.

No group should be using a public building intended as a place of wrok for demonstations or seperatist gatherings, period.

Doesn't matter if the group is Gay Pride or Mothers of Multiples, the concept is jsut damn silly.

Kyoukan's arguement is simply that a middle class white male will never be able to understand what it's like to be truly discriminated against on a broad scale. We as white males in the middle class really have not suffered the hardship 'en masse' that most other minorities have suffered. I mean, does any white male here feel that their race will be a factor for their entire life?

Now please read down.

The two main points I approched were Kyoukan's, in fact basically cut and pasted from her words. If you just got it, that is because you are discriminating against her.

On another note, I am all for freedom of choice as far as gay vs straight, but I agree with Raist that it does not need to be advertised to me, as I do not give a shit.
