Can I just say that Chester from the Sifl and Olly show was the funniest puppet ever? I seriously almost died from laughing when he did his little thing on "using foot long hamsters as skateboards." And hopefully Etasi knows that Chester is her avatar ;)

Etasi and I discovered Sifl and Olly after I looked up the video for Liam Lynch's "Whatever" on kazaa. I found a bunch of episodes and just downloaded one for the hell of it. We were laughing our asses off so much that I ended up downloading the entire 2nd season for us to watch. Still have it all on CD. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

I used to date a girl that banged her head on the wall. She would get all depresed and just sit in the corner beating her head on the wall. When we got some place where there were no sharp objects, great hights or walls. we said our fine good byes.

That just totaly freaked me out beyound wierd... I though her head was going to turn around and she would start yelling and swering at me backwards or something.

Care to elaborate a bit?

As far as men's listening skills go, it's usually because women just talk too damn much and we mentally filter the noise out

The book is about sociobiology, or how much of the differences in psychology between the sexes is in part due to biology.
The title refers to one aspect of this for both sexes
1) Men don't listen. Ladies have you ever tried to speak to your man when he's driving/watching TV/reading/picking his nose and it's as though he ignores you or pretends not to hear? It's not deliberate! It's due to the greater compartmentalisation of the male brain. When a woman watches TV, electrical activity in the brain is spread across several areas (this is true for womens brains in general). In men, the activity is tightly focussed in the visual area of the brain. The areas of the brain responsible for listening are almost inert. Basically when a man is concentrating on something, the rest of his brain is more dormant than a woman's. He really can't hear you :) Or at least can't process the sounds quickly.
2) Women can't read maps. Or rather, women can't re-orient maps mentally and have to physically turn the map around in order to work it out. Men are good at doing 3D mental transformations. This touches on car parking etc etc. It may sound sexist but it isn't (the book actually has a section on how perceived sexism has been a barrier to this kind of research).
It's utterly an utterly fascinating book and touches on many subjects such as men's inability to find things right under their noses, women's greater ability to multitask, why men don't want to talk when they get home from work and women do etc etc.
Read it!

PS: Ive used what I read in RL too. When making games with maps now I ensure the map rotates so that up is always forward in order to make life a little easier for female gamers. Car manufacturers with routefinders in their cars had to learn the same lesson.

men are pretty simple

they like to have some peace and quiet, they like to have sex, they like to get stupid sometimes, and i would love to be sleeping right now.

love

i use the word love to describe my cool pillow right now, because i do deeply love that pillow.

nothing in life could satisfy me right now like that pillow and a nice blanket.

i love my blanket.

Don't forget the freshly-laundered linen sheets, Vor. It's the little things....

While we are debating the oddities of women and men, why are women so incapable of clearly stating what they want?

Anyone else ever been through the 20-questions-to-find-a-restaurant game?

"Where would you like to eat?"

"I don't know."

"How about Mexican?"

"No, I don't feel like Mexican."

"Ok, Italian then?"

"No, that doesn't sound good either."

"Well, where would you like to eat?"

"I don't know."

"Steaks?"

"No."

"Well, you choose then."

"I don't know..."

here is Voronwe's guide to solving the 20 question restaurant game, which is incidentally worse when your wife is pregnant and is extremely hungry but doesnt like anything either.

Voronwe: Baby where do you want to go?
Mrs. Voronwe: i dont know?
Voronwe: How about x or y?
Mrs. Voronwe: I dont know you pick.
Voronwe: OK we are going to z

x= a restaurant she likes
z= my favorite restaurant

just make a command decision. dont pick Z all the time or she'll start saying, "I dont know but NOT Z"

Whenever I sense the conversation may be leading towards the dreaded "which resturant" dilema, I immediately make the decision with confidence. Same with movies. It's just a lot easier.

Evil, sounds like he just wants to make sure you're happy w/ the choice because when the wife isn't happy we hear about it ad nauseum.

Truth be told though, I approach it like Fair because I think she dislikes making the choice even more than a bad resturaunt.

This is by far the most annoying male quality.

Oh and P.S. - I hate having to pick the restaurant when I don't have a "craving" and if I am forced to make the decision it's a complete ordeal, especially if I am super hungry. Times like that I just prefer to have the decision removed from my control definately. It's one of my more annoying personality traits for sure.

"I dunno, whatever."

"Yeah anything sounds good."

"ok what then?"

"whatever.."

"Yeah I'm hungry."

"Tacos...Italian?"

"Yeah those sound good"

"sure, whatever"

"Christ! Which one?"

"I dunno"

"Ok Italian."

"sure, why not"

"Ok which resteraunt...Donateli's? etc etc..

"yeah whichever"

"sure, those sound good...

Well according to what Tanc posted, I must be a guy- at least as far as "listening while doing other things" goes. Though, like Sirensa, if I don't have a craving for something, picking a restaurant is the stuff of nightmares. I would much rather someone else just go ahead and pick, provided that they know what I absolutely hate, and don't pick that.

Well Etasi it's like this! :)
The deciding factor isn't sec per se, but the amount of testosterone getting to the brain during a key part of pregnancy. And also the amount of testosterone in the blood at any given time. So it TENDS to be men but there are of course wide variations in applicability. There are some low-testosterone men and some high testosterone women etc etc.
Another snippet from the book: Asian/Oriental men have (generally speaking) less testosterone than europeans (no beards etc). A car safety organisation did tests on reverse-parking capability and found (on average) European males could reverse park an unfamiliar car first time 88% of the time. For orientals the same test gave a 65% pass rate. The gap between men and women of similar extractions was in the same range.
At certain points in the menstrual cycle women's oestrogen levels dip, thus raising their relative testosterone leves. During this period women improve their spacial awareness abilities.
It was a VARY INTERESTING!!1!! book.

For kicks, take all the references to men or women in some of the comments:
- "are teh debil
- "...frustrating! Always pretending like they haven't done anything!"
- "banged her head on the wall."
- "stupid...assholes."
- "...talk too damn much and we mentally filter the noise out"
- "are pretty simple"
- "are pigs!"
- "so incapable of clearly stating what they want?"
- "overreact about the dumbest shit and blow it way way outta proportion."

I know people in both sexes that match these decriptions. They are personality traits and characteristics of people not sexes. Any person can be an asshole, talk too much, a pig, can overreact, and I'm sure there are men out there that beat their head against a wall. :vv_WTF: It really does not matter if your male or female. :D

Personally I'm a simple pig who does devilish acts, talks too much and yet filters what i want to hear, especially if it is not clearly stated. Then I get to be the asshole by blowing it out of proportion

when women say we don't know that means we want you to pick. jesus you think you'd catch on after a few hundred years.

female humans instinctually want to be provided for via thousands of years of behavioral conditioning. that includes where we want to be taken.

even if by the process of elimination we eventually wind up going to the restaurant or movie we ultimately had in mind we still want you to pick it.

my fiance generally tells me where we are going and I am cool with that.

grow a fucking spine and tell your spouse/girlfriend/mom where you are taking her.
