Windows Xp...
Can WinXP actually address 2 GB of RAM?
I ask because my gubmint money just came in, and it's new PC time. Most of the P4 mobos I've checked out have 4 DIMM slots with dual channel support, and 512 MB sticks of the good stuff aren't very expensive ATM.

What are you basing that on? Can you back up that statement, or are you talking out of your ass? XP in any flavor makes windows ME look like the piece of shit that it was. Don't spread disinformation to people who don't know any better you fucking prat.Owenn wrote:XP Home is a crock of shit. I wouldn't recommend it over Windows Me.
There is NO FUNCTIONAL DIFFERENCE between XP home and XP pro in the way it operates, only in some ancillary features.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp
The differences:
- Advanced networking for multiple PC environments
- Internet Information Services (IIS), a Windows XP Professional feature that lets you host and manage personal Web sites
- Support for multiple-processor systems
- Support for multiple languages
- Windows XP Professional provides more robust options for backing up and restoring data than Home Edition.
- The Encrypting File System (EFS), found in Windows XP Professional but not Windows XP Home Edition, allows you to encrypt your files and folders for added security of sensitive data against theft or hackers. Restricted File Access, also found only in Professional, allows you to restrict access to selected files, applications, and other resources.
- Windows XP Professional is best for people who connect to large networks, such as a school or office network, since it allows you to join and be managed by a Windows domain.
- Remote Desktop, a feature found only in Windows XP Professional, lets you set up your computer for connection from any other Windows-based computer.
Given that I have copies of both, running on two different machines, I think I would know.

Jesus fucking christ on a pogo stick! Do I have to patrol these forums to make sure people aren't shooting bullshit out of their mouths like fucking firehoses? Just shut the fuck up. Too much RAM NEVER slows down anything. The only question when having large amounts of RAM is whether or not the operating system you have can address it. XP in either flavor can. Please STFU. Just don't talk and die.Searyx wrote:Too much ram usually slows you down.

If you ever worked with software developers for any length of time you'd pay for all of your software. The amount of work that went into making XP boggles my mind. The man-hours would be staggering.masteen wrote:People actually pay for Windows?Aranuil wrote:If money isn't an issue, go with Pro, but there's nothing wrong with using home.
I pay for nearly all of my software. Something like the OS, I definitely pay for.

My company is certified partners with Micro$oft. So I get all the software they send out.
Let me tell ya something. Server 2003 is the best os I have ever delt with.
Office 2003 is ok
Exchange 2003 is fucking mind blowing, lots of changes..
No new ISA yet, I still don't understand why anyone would use software instead of hardware. ISA plainly suks ass

Just because a company puts an assload of manhours into something does not preclude to possibility that it's shit. I always buy my games, but I'll never give Microsloth a penny.Aranuil wrote:If you ever worked with software developers for any length of time you'd pay for all of your software. XP is not something you can just grab a copy of and install. It is just too much of a pain in the ass to have to wait for someone with a licensed copy to rip it and put it up on an FTP. You need a licensed copy in order to get updates. For $90 you eliminate the hassles. Most of you have spent more money than that on porn in the last 5 months.
The only thing keeping me from buying XP for home is that I would have to basically format the drives and do everything from the ground up in order to get a good install. Just not looking forward to anything like that in the near future.

You can get updates with a illegal copy of XP.....don't ask me how I know.
Windows ME was the biggest peice of shit microsoft ever put out.....I bought and installed it on my machine the week it came out....15 mins after I was done installing it I re-formatted my HD yet again and put Windows 98 SE back on.
Actually, I can't say it was a peice of shit, I just hated it and I'm not sure exactly why...it seemed to run slower and the interface was harder to use..and I'm not the type of person who is resistant to change.
Now Windows XP was good....I ended up putting that on all 4 of my machines here....it only took me like a day to decide XP was an upgrade from 98SE.
Microsoft doesn't always put out a better version....take Access 97 for example...far more buggy then access 95 or even 2.0...seemed slower also. 2000 was OK and 2002 seems decent. I dunno about 2003.
Claritin is using server 2003 and I think he likes it....I probably won't switch to it though...not until I get a new machine. And I probably won't get a new machine for awhile....maybe 2005 or so. I don't play games much anymore...and I could browse the net/e-mail/IM on almost anything.

Kilmoll, unless you have Win2k at home, the time you invest in reformatting to get a clean install of XP, will be well worth it in long term hassle.
One of my XP boxes was just an install over an existing Windows ME and I have had no problems.
I'm not sure it is as necessary with XP as it was with Windows 4.x to have a nice clean drive to throw the OS on.

I had a pirated CD of XP a week before it was officially released. I've grabbed updates from the MS website on three different machines with the same copy. I've only spent $60 on pr0n this year, DVD pr0n is teh win!Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:XP is not something you can just grab a copy of and install. Come to think of it, my 2000 box has never crashed either.

My 2000 box flips me off when I boot it up, Damn kids load so much shit on it.

I had a little homemade firewall that had 414 days of continuous uptime when I turned it off to pack it up. Red Hat 6, I think. No Windows machine has ever come close, but at least XP boots up faster after freezing.Aranuil wrote:Mast,

Ouch! I guess I deserved that one. I was exagerating on the comparison to Me.Aranuil wrote: What are you basing that on? Can you back up that statement, or are you talking out of your ass?
If money isn't an issue, go with Pro, but there's nothing wrong with using home.

In my experience with XP Home in the office, it is mostly from SalesGuy01 buying a new laptop and wanting me to connect him to our network and setup his VPN so he can "work" from home 4 hours a day. Of course he wants this done in 15 minutes so he can make his tee time.
So you can see why I am a bit on the negative side of XP home.
I use XP Pro on multiple machines and even XP Home *cough* on my wife's laptop at home. I don't have any complaints with Pro and recommend it to everyone who asks.

Love XP, a hundred times better than the 98 I was using before it. I use 2000 here at school, and it seems a lot like 98. Pretty unstable and slows down fast, but that's also in part to the machines/possibly poorly installed software.
Question for some XP people... I currently run an illegal copy of it, but am considering getting a legit one. Is there a way to change the CD key used without reformatting so I could start using the Windows Update?

If you want to go the cheap and illegal route, go here: http://theonlybob.com/cracking%20winxp%20sp1.htmDregor Thule wrote:Love XP, a hundred times better than the 98 I was using before it. If you just want to change the Product Key, try this: http://ryan.ript.net/xppid/
