I love music just as much as anyone else. Classical, Baroque, Rock, Punk, Rap, (little) Country. Call it what you will but its Contemporary music in the end. What does this have to do with the subject? Well like most of you, I used to love to watch MTV when I was younger (15 years ago) and grew up with it experiencing the combination of sight and sound in some form of art. MTV has gone from being 90% videos to 10% videos and it really pisses me off. I miss 120 minutes with Matt Pinfield instead my brain is pummeled with shows about a guy on a date with two girls and has to choose between them. I miss the music. Maybe im just becoming old and bitter, but wtf! can I atleast see a video? Is that so hard to ask?

I, like most used to be part of some kind of underground music generation. Whether it was the punk revival, the hardcore movement, or the mix of rap and rock, it eventually met in one place and that was MTV. Still a corporation looking for the big buck but they had a devotion to music. Now its just another E! type channel. Lots of bling bling, tits, ass, tits, cars, ass, cars on ass, ass on cars.

Hell VH1 doesnt play music anymore either. Though they might still be owned by MTV. All we have left is MTV2 which most of us have to pay extra for. This sucks. I want my MTV

If you get the channle, Might wanna take a look at the canadian Much Music. They play 90-95% video's and although they do follow mostly popular music, they do have a good one popping up here and there. I don't have digital cable or one of those dish services however so I can't really comment on their spin off specialty channels like Much Loud(Metal/Rock) or Much Vibe(Rap/R&B/Urban)

MTV2 is the last bastion of hope for music videos, I fear. Much Music isn't toooo bad but they play a lot of crappy music. (Not that the others don't...)

Do you have digital cable, Sassy? We get "Music Choice" digital music channels here in Orlando on Time Warner (Bright House Networks now, I think). Alternative Rock and Electronica are by far my fave. =)

Edit: Also, http://www.woxy.com plays lots of good modern rock type stuff. You can listen online. Not the best quality, but it's really good selection.

Music Videos have essentially become television commercials anyways.

some are still cool and all i guess, but no big deal to me personally. 99% of them are the same.

100% of them are the same if we are talking about hip hop videos.

Nope I just have regular cable with HBO1 and 2. Cox Cable is really our only choice in Pcola. They didnt include MTV2 in the regular package

. Though a local station likes to play some tidbits from MTV2 every now and then. All I really have is Reverb on HBO.

I was big into MTV as a kid (mid eighties) and would usually watch as soon as I got home from school everyday. Now the channel is just crap. I don't think my music tastes have changed really. I like pop and such still but it seems like I everytime I switch through MTV it is that stupid Snoop Dog video with the squeaky prison-tattooed guy or elimidate.

"We" need a music video network that is for our generation. An Mtv that grew up with us, you might say. All videos, all the time. Fuck the shows, fuck the rotations, fuck the countdowns, and fuck the cover-model VJs. Fuck the current Mtv and all it stands for.

"We", the Mtv Generation, grew up. Mtv is more intent on sticking to the 10-20ish audiance and helping control what is, or is not, popular music. Mtv shapes the music industry by influencing it's target audiance. That is their power, and that is where they will forever stay.

i gave up on mtv a long time ago, mtv2 is ok but still nothing like mtv used to be. i have the same cable as xou has, much

for 149 66 404 414 and such. what i really got pissed at was when they got rid of mtvX. mtvx was a godsend, only rock videos all the time, then they put some bullshit stuff in and i just gave up on anything mtv

there is probably billions of dollars in market research backing MTVs decision to go for 12-25 year olds as their target demo.

just shooting from the hip, i'd hazard to guess for the last 40+ years, record companies have gone for that demographic (with pop music anyway) because they are the most likely to be buying the stuff.

they shouldnt cater to people like me, because i still wont watch that channel. Their biggest show (TRL) is on when school kids get home, not when "we" get home.

VH1 goes for the 25-40 crowd i guess. I dont watch that either though.

You know, that's an interesting idea.

Start a cable channel that begins with children's programming and follow the growth of a generation, updating the programming to reflect the changing age of the generation it targets.

You might get a lot of loyality from that.

I still like MTV, but actually not even really for the videos. Real World Paris starts tomorrw night! Not to mention I was totally hooked on Sorority Life and Fraternity Life.

Muchmusic changed to "fuse" a few weeks ago.

Still pretty much the same programming, maybe a little more music than before. They play a lot of good stuff, they stay away from the whole pop genre for the most part. It's about all i watch anymore.

I agree MTV sucks these days. Make a new music channel and bring back all the 80's music for the decade. maybe throw in some early 90's stuff but no modern things.

Used to watch the show religiously but now i don't waste my time either. sucks

Vailex, I didn't know you lived in Pensacola, jeez guilded with ya for 2 years and I suck! Anyways, you guys remember back in the mid 90's didn't MTV go through a phase where they stopped playing videos basically, it was like Real World station(which was a cool show), and when they did play a video it was always rap. Mind you I'm not against rap perse, but they seemed to miss the entire 90's alternative thing, which most of X'ers were listening to I would think.

Anyways, you can still see music videos on both Vh1 and MTV, but you have to wait till 2am and wait till Vh1 stops airing that "I love the 80's" show for the 2000th time.

I'm one of those that watched MTV when it first aired. Anyone remember Mark Goodman, Nina Blackwood, Martha Stewart and J.J. Jackson? I dug up a really old Dead Kennedy's tape and listened to it, I laughed pretty hard when I heard MTV Get Off The Air. It made me think think of how much I used to love that channel and now it's shit.

I love MTV. I love the shows and their creativity. I don't have cable at home simply because all I ever watched was MTV. I don't miss the videos at all, they sucked a fat dick when I was growing up anyways.

I think I stopped watching MTV about the time when shows and rap seemed all there was to it.
It does seem obvious to me that once I've gone thru my teenage years and onto adulthood, teenage matters were no longer interesting. These days the only teenagers I come in contact with is through EQ.
And that will most likely change once my kid reaches that MTV age. I'm sure I'll be watching it again to get back in to that mindset.

3. I hate sorority life, real world, road rules, fraternity life....if you were say 29 and your friends were 21...and some of thier friends were as young as 16...and you went to parties with them...you would understand why I hate that type of show. I hate drama queens and the shows that create them.

4. MTV will always be geared towards the HS and college crowd. That's where the money is....for those of you approaching 30 or older...think about how many CD's (cassettes, records, 8-tracks whatever) that you bought in HS and college compared to what you buy now.

5. I'm not sure you could track a generation with a TV channel. People like different things, mature at different rates.....how many here listen to 80's music still? How many techno? Rap? Alternative? Metal? Punk? How would you do that? You would have to cater towards a specific group of the generation....or you have to mix it up so much that the loyalty would plummet....not many people would listen to a rap music video block that lasts an hour if they hate rap.

They are directly responsible for showing that shit and propagating the stereotype. They can easily set guidlines on what they will and will not play.

I don't know what the broadcasting laws are like in the states but payola is definately illegal in canada. Like most television stations they amke money from the cable companies and from advertising.
Music videos are essentailly 'free' content for stations like MTV and Much Music. The only problem is that they have no real control over the quality of the content.

I don't know a whole lot about MTV but I suspect the gradual programming shift was just a way of realising their ambitions. You gotta admit that going from a little cable music station to national institution and international entertainment conglomerate in 20 years isn't too shabby.
