Win2k/XP Help

Post by Ransure »

Ok, so new computers built, OS's loaded, EQ loaded and patched.... something no worky..

Ive gotten 2k to load on both my machines, the specs are as follows:

Box1
Athalon XP 2500+
2 x 512MB DDR 2700
Maxtor ATA133 30GB
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Epox Nforce2 Motherboard

Box2
Duron 600mhz
3 x 256MB PC133
Maxtor ATA33 15GB
Gforce2MX 400 64MB
Some VIA chipset board

So heres the problem, I get 2k loaded, download the latest video drivers, add some additional software (Spybot, EQ, Kazaa Lite, ect) go through windows update, and try to reboot. Both computers cannot seem to shut down normally, they both hang and give me the End Now text for Explorer.exe. This error is identical for both computers.

I also have a copy of WinXP here that I have tried to load on both computers, however everytime I format the HDD to NTFS and load the setup files, as soon as the computer reboots to the XP install screen I am getting a Manifest Parse Error.

Last problem, the computer Im typing this on is fully patched for EQ, when I first loaded the OS it ran EQ through EQw great, fastest Ive ever played.... Now every time I try to start EQ I get an error stating that windows is creating an error file, the contents of the error file is below:

Since your two Win2k boxes have different hardware, you can pretty much guarantee that your are getting a software conflict.

From reading your post it sounds like you installed quite a bit of software and then some Microsoft hotfixes all in the same reboot. I'll hazard a guess that the problem you're having with that is occurring right around that time, or one of your programs you're installing has a conflict with Win2k.

Other techie types can correct me if I'm wrong, but I would suggest doing clean installs in this order.

1. OS
2. Barest drivers, if needed, to connect to internet
3. OS fixes, service packs, etc
4. DirectX (though this doesn't seem to be nearly the problem child it used to be)
5. All other drivers, normally chipset drivers first and then whatever else
6. Programs

For the WinXP problem, this seems like it could definitely apply
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;331881

For the EQ problem, I don't know offhand. Haven't been playing EQ for a while now, but you may want to check the EQ technical support forums, if they're still around that is.
