I know some of you might be working summer jobs in a factory or doing construction labor over the summer, or might work in that type of environment all the time. Working at a place that has seen it's fair share of work related injuries and deaths, a co-worker wrote a poem several years back that holds a pretty good message for people to remember when working with others in a dangerous area or situation.
I Chose to Look The Other Way
I could have saved a life that day.
But I chose to look the other way.
It wasn't that I didn't care,
I had the time, and I was there.
But I didn't want to seem a fool,
Or argue over a safety rule.
I knew he'd done the job before,
If I called it wrong, he might get sore.
The chances didn't seem that bad,
I'd done the same, He knew I had.
So I shook my head and walked on by,
He knew the risks as well as I.
He took the chance, I closed an eye,
And with that act, I let him die.
I could have saved a life that day,
But I chose to look the other way.
Now every time I see his wife,
I'll know, I should have saved his life.
That guilt is something I mus bear,
But it isn't something you need share.
If you see a risk that others take,
That puts their health or life at stake.
The question asked, or thing you say,
Could help them live another day.
If you see a risk and walk away,
Then hope you never have to say,
I could have saved a life that day,
But I chose, to look the other way.

I feel bad for people who are ignorant of the potential consequences with decisions they make. That is truly sad
However, adults who are aware of such risks and still decide to put themselves in that position... well their life, their choice. No one should go through life beating themselves up for someone else's bad decision.
In fact I think far too many people do…the writer of this poem for example.

Support bacteria - they're the only culture some people have
Nice poem
To me it works both ways. If he still wants to be dumb even if he knows the safety rules thats his choice, me not reminding that person about it and pointing it out is my choice. Atleast I could remind him and know i walk away without a guilty concious and the what if.
