New pot bill introduced in House

PROPOSED CANNABIS PENALTIES

• Possession of 15 grams or less of marijuana: a fine of $150 for an adult, $100 for a youth.
• Possession of one gram or less of cannabis resin: a fine of $300 for an adult and $200 for a youth.

• Possession of 15 grams or less of marijuana or one gram or less of cannabis resin where aggravating factors exist: a fine of $400 for an adult and $250 for a youth.

• Possession of between 15 grams and 30 grams of marijuana: A police officer would decide if the person should receive a ticket or issue a summons for a summary conviction. The ticket fine would be $300 for an adult and $200 for a youth. The summary conviction penalty would be up to six months imprisonment and/or up to a $1,000 fine.

bah! Make the Youths pay the same price as adults: they wanna play like big kids, they can pay like em... not like its jail time we're talking about here and the stiffer fines may make their parents take a more "active" interest in getting their kids educated on the effects of these substances.

Note: I am not a raving anti-pot fanatic, I used to smoke a lot of hash, but I believe that everyone, and especially teens, should be at least somewhat informed about what they are doing to themselves and any possible consequences to their longer-term health.

I was never much into hash or marijuana.
This type of forward thinking by government is nice to see.

I believe alcohol and tobacco are just as (if not more) damaging to your health as marijuana.

The money the Canadian government will save by taking these minor offences out of the courts and jails would be well used to set up drug awareness and education programs.

Its being intorduced by the government, so it will. The Liberal Party has a majority of seats so they can ram through anything they have a strong enough desire to. I can see that there may be some ammendments to the bill, but the opposition parties have nothing to gain by trying to philibuster or kill this.

I agree with Miir that I would like to see some of the savings on proceedings/fines be used in education/awareness programs and studies to actually show the effects of these substances, but we'll have to see how substantial the dollars are.

Agreed, should be the same for a minor as an adult. Reduced jail sentences for minors is one thing, but for something like a ticket? Let them learn their lesson the tough way and pay in full.

After hearing the details of what Canada might do, I guess I didn't realize what they meant by "decriminalization of marijuana". Those laws are pretty similar to what has existed in my area (Ann Arbor, MI) for as long as I can remember. I don't know the exact measurements, but I do know that possession of at least 7 grams is only a civil infraction (less than a misdemeanor) and up until a few years back was a fine of only $25. I have heard the fine has raised since 1995, but I think it is still no more than $50 or so.

AA is actually known for it's lax laws in regards to pot. Hash Bash is in Ann Arbor for that very reason. Ann Arbor's laws are most defenately not the norm in the US.

Oh, I knew we had some of the most lenient laws regarding pot in the country, what I didn't realize was that all the hubbub surrounding the proposed legislation in Canada was pretty much making it the same as it was here in my hometown. I was assuming Canada was going to have coffee shops like Amsterdam. Oh well, guess there's still no reason for me to drive over to Windsor.
