I know a little something about Crotchrockets?
I've been riding a bike for about seven years now. I suggest you take a motorcycle safety course. They teach you everything you need to know. They also provide the bike and helmet. The only thing required of you is that you wear: jeans, shoes that cover your ankles, and gloves that cover your wrists.
I never even sat on a motorcycle before I took this class. And I have to say, things that I learned seven years ago still come into use today. They teach you how to swerve, how to stop, ya know emergency manuvers.
Also, if you're under 21 it cost $75. If you're over 21, it costs about $200 (they're trying to encourage younger riders to take the course). Insurance companies and motorcycle shops give discounts once you pass the course. The best part is, you take the driving portion of your test for your cycle license in the class. It's way easier than the driving portion of the at the DMV.
If you're in California, check out this link: http://www.mcycleinstructor.com/index.html

I drove a Suzuki Katana for 2 years. I wrecked taking a turn too aggressively. I was only going about 20mph and I still have the scars. My family was against the idea from the beginning but I still bought mine, so I'm sure that a total stranger on the net telling you not to get one won't change your mind.
My advice is to get a cruiser if you really want a motorcycle. Otherwise, be safe and good luck.

so if 100+ in a camry and a 4runner and 120+ in the camry although its a piece of shit, and the only reason i want a crotch rocket is to go faster than the limit of my two current cars, than i should skip the rocket and save up and get a Lamborghinni... =p eh?

Clatis get yourself one of these:

Take that puppy out on the freeway and see how fast you can get going the day you get it, I wouldn't worry about getting used to the bike or anything first just hop on and hit that thing up to about 160, then see if you can put your arms out to the sides.
j/k bout that, probably not the best of ideas. I don't want to get you killed, just brutally injured.

These comments are common, but unfortunately it is not this simple. SOME companies offer the discounts to SOME people in SOME states. It is not required by the state, and it is not allowed with others. I would recommend the courses regardless. If you hope to get the discounts as well just give your insurance company a call to see what they will offer, and make sure to ask whether you would qualify for the discount. It is a pita to try to explain to some people that if they were a certain age or older they could have a discount...it is even harder when EVERYone on their policy has to be over that age.Spangaloid_PE wrote:you also get cheaper insurance with the safety course completion

That all depends on the company. Seriously, some companies are not allowed to offer the discount. It all depends on their licensing. I only know because I am an underwriter in about 20 states now. While most companies in Hawaii might be able to offer the discount, North Carolina could be completely different. I think Hawaii is very specific in what companies can be present, and where I am mentioning "company" this doesn't mean things like Farmers, State Farm, Geico, etc.. I am talking about the actual company that you are covered under within your state. Each company has different companies to write you in depending on where you are in multiple categories. Some states offer/allow only certain types of company. That's why you will see something like "Farmers Companies" rather than just "Farmers."

I have some advice for you..
- Skip the motocycle saftey class. Taking it would just delay the inevitable.
- Buy a shitty helmet or wear no helmet at all. If you survive your first drop you'll probably be in so much pain that you'll wish you were dead. A cracked skull helps you be dead.
- Wear shorts, t-shirt and sandals because there isn't enough pictures of road rash available to convince new riders to wear leathers.
- fill out your organ donation card

Helmet & Leathers
I don't think you need full leathers but, I also think that riding in shorts and flip flops is kinda dumb too. I say you only need a good leather jacket (not some flimsy Wilson's Leather bullshit) and a good pair of boots that come half way up your calf. Your boots should have some kind of re-enforcement built in, just in case the bike falls on your foot.
I've been in a couple of accidents and I walked away everytime wearing just what I described.
Oh...I also wore a helmet. I live in Cali and helmets are required by law. Truthfully, if I had the choice I wouldn't even wear one. Helmets are good to wear when you first starting riding, but once you know what you're doing, people shouldn't have to wear one. They should change the law so that if you're under 25 or riding less than four years, then a helmet should be required.

I was considering a cheap crotch rocket a month or so ago, I decided against it when I thought about wearing all that leather....it defeated my purpose of getting a bike...to be out in the air.
And about that one bike, if I remember right that's a Viper V-10 engine right? That thing was crazy.

Being over 25 or experienced isn't going to help you much when someone blindsides you.Jezdziec Znikad wrote:I don't think you need full leathers but, I also think that riding in shorts and flip flops is kinda dumb too. Would you drive around an expensive (to you) vehicle without insurance? Wear a fucking helmet.

I have a friend in germany who used to get with his buddies and build these awesome bikes and go racing across country on the autobahn at god awful speeds to see who could get from city to city the fastest, they always wore leathers which makes sense at those speeds, but they also wear them when they were just gonna ride the bike.
He laughs and thinks americans are really stupid for not wearing them when they ride.
My friend who always wore leathers is now minus the use of one hand and pretty much most of his lower arm and has permanent neck damage, ya he was wearing his leathers the day he had his crash and those leathers didnt help him when the car crossed the line and crashed into him at 50mph sending him to the hospital and having his heart restarted 3 times.
Moral : No matter what ya wear you will always take the chance from the moron that doesnt see you and wipe's you across his grill.

The first one was in a parking lot.. a buddy and I were going to the bank. Some little old lady cut off my buddy and he swerved in front of me and hit the brakes. End result.. 15mph rearend crash.. he didn't quite fall down, I went over the handlebars (and him) and landed on my head.
I then got up, and cursed him out because the cheap plastic piece on the top of my helmet broke off. I'd have been knocked unconsious at least if I wasn't wearing a helmet. I was lucky, and walked away with a chaffed knee and a bloody pair of jeans.
The second one was on a military base where I was stationed. I was driving down a road I had taken with my car several times. It had rained the day before and there were a couple of puddles. What I hadn't noticed in my car was that there was a set of railroad tracks that ran next to the road, and crossed it when the road made a slight turn. I hit a wet railroad track at about 25 miles per hour making a very light turn and the front wheel lost traction. Bike spilled and I slid about 20 yards down the road on my helmets faceshield.. which wore a hole in it from the asphalt.
That one nearly wrecked the bike, and for sure would have required plastic surgery if I had not had a helmet. Since I was wearing a helmet, I was only out about 50 bucks for another helmet and 300 bucks or so for the repairs to the bike.
Sorry if I rambled a bit there.. the point I was trying to make is that I had 2 accidents, both at 25mph or less which could have been fatal without a helmet.
If you buy a motorcycle, wear a helmet always.

I have seen first hand what NOT wearing the proper gear causes. When I was about 18 I was driving out to my parents, stopped at a Carls Jr and proceeded on my way. I was about to get onto the freeway onramp when I saw a BIG Ford Ltd (or maybe a mid 70's 4 dorr Caddy) driving "odd" (slow and slight swerving not drastic though). So I being a kid still actually had the sense to kinda wait where I was. Well low and behold Grandma decided at the last possible second to swerve Left towards the OFFRAMP. The sad part is she didnt see the guy coming under the freeway on his motorcycle. Guy was wearing cut off shorts tank top sneakers and NO helmet. Needless to say there was an impact, both drivers werent going more than 25 or so. When the cycle impacted the very front Right corner of the car , it catipaulted him up and over and into the " Raggidy Ann " cartwheel, the guy must have done 2 or 3 rotations before sliding across the ground a good 20-30 feet. The only saving grace for this guy was that he didnt land on his head. If he would have I believe he woukd have died on the spot. Instead he had his entire right side shredded into hamburger. I stopped tried to help as much as I could until the police arrived (another passerby had a cell phone and called 9-11 , this was back in 88 so cell wasa rarety).
About a week and a half later I got a mystery call , guy sounding odd, like he was still in great pain. It was the gentleman that got hit. He said " Thank you for staying around and helping, calling my wife and my work, I know that a lot of kids would have just kept on going. Thank you" Justthose few words got me very touched (yes even shed a tear , must have had something in my eye).
Moral of my rant : Wear the right gear , this guy was one lucky S. O. B.

You are stupid if you don't wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle, period, end of story. I don't care what your excuse is for not wanting to wear one, it's stupid too.
I cannot even imagine the kind of retarded shit that must go through someone's mind when they convince themselves that they don't need to wear a helmet.

While I would wear a helmet if I rode...I won't MAKE someone else do it.
They are going to have enough problems if they wreck without it to remember that someone told them before what would happen if they didn't wear one. I know several bikers, and some wear helmets...some don't. They don't rag on each other for goin' at it either way, but they both say they shouldn't HAVE to do it.

First off if you don't have any experiance on bikes take a course.
Your not gonna want to start off on a larger bike either.
Find your self a good bike in the 600cc range.
Couple of suggestions are
Yamaha YZF 600 very nice bike.

Honda CBR600f4i or CBR600RR
600RR
600f4i
Suzuki GSXR 600

Suzuki GSXR 750

I Like the Yamaha and the Suzukis personally both are outstanding bikes.

I looked at the Dodge Tomahawk more today, they said there is a chance they might produce a few hundred of them.
They would have 500HP and do 0-60 in 2.5 secs. Top speed estimated well over 300, perhaps as high as 420mph. Crazy shit.
On a similar note if you can't wait to kill yourself....here is another option

That bike has a V-8 instead of a V-10 but it's got 502 HP and you can buy it TODAY! haha. I have no idea on the 0-60 or top speeds. I'm sure it's fast enough.

Crotch Rocket..
I'd say from your initial post : stay the hell away from one!
That said... they are a blast. I did some very foolish things on mine.... like 155 mph between 75 and I-35 on I-635 in Dallas. Hey it WAS 4 am
Personaly for a first bike I would not go with a 600 crotch rocket. Get something witha V-Twin. And no not Harley/cruiser necesarily. Ducati Monster 600 (620 now?), Honda VTR-1000F (what I had). Much easier for a beginning rider than those wired 600s.
You also might consider something without a lot of body work too fix.....
