In this respect, the first week of EverQuest's life was an unmitigated disaster. Most of the problems Verant and 989 attributed to one of their Internet providers, but there were most likely other issues involved as well. The next week wasn't much better, as frequent crashes, disconnection, and unavailability of servers extended the disaster another seven days or so. Then, as if by magic, most of the problems evaporated
Visually EverQuest is a beautiful experience. The graphic designers have done a fantastic job of modeling a variety of different natural environments such as swamps, forests, plains, and deserts and in giving each of the cities it own unique feel and architecture. The gameworld is rendered entirely in 3D and the game supports D3D and Glide compatible 3D cards.
When a character first enters the world of Norrath they soon discover how big the world is and how unforgiving it can be. Many "newbies" accidentally attack an NPC like a shopkeeper or guard and can die far from their starting point losing their body with all of their hard-earned gear. The world of Norrath is broken into playing areas called zones.
There is so much I could say about the beginning of EQ. I have never had more fun in any game ever, than I did in April/May of 1999. I was a Senior at the time and took more days than I could off of school just to play. Everything was so new to me, and even to this day I look back at that as the pinnacle of gaming. Everyone may have their petty squabbles with SOE, but I know I wouldn't have signed up for any/all of their beta tests, if I didn't know they could pump out a quality game. For anyone that consistently slams Sony, forgets about how they were sucked into this game to begin with. I would give anything to have as much fun as I had when wandering around Norrath for the first time.
And the lengths at which people go to complain about the game shows the depth of the love they have for the game. The game would not elict such strong and emotional responses if people weren't attached to it. People would not be playing the game after 4 years if they didnt do the majority of it right.

Everquest wasnt made my SOE.It was made by Verant in what most of the main people were fired/pushed out after SOE fully baught them out. IE 2 months process before SoL. As you see, SoL,PoP,LoY are so out standing, its 200% better play than Old Eq,Kunark, and Velous......rrriiiiiighttt.Although 989 is part of Sony, Verant was the sole ones in charge of every aspect of the game.

Yeah those were the best times. How the hell did we all have so much fun BEFORE we got the levels and gear? I think it was the feeling of newness, knowing that there were undiscovered quests, and that you couldn't look up anything in a heartbeat on a spoiler site, and knowing that maybe you would find a previously unknown quest or recipe. We also didn't know every single thing we had to look forward to as we progressed as we do now. I think the real reason EQ stopped being so fun is that a) the mystery is gone and b) everything is a time sink now (remember when the main concern was getting enough pp to get that combine sword and/or the last 3 spells for the level you just dinged? now its farming a 7 day spawn week after week, fighting off steamrollers, to get leet_weapon_07).
Now it's more addiction and the fact that nothing better is out there than the actual fun and wonder of pre-Kunark EQ that keeps people on. Oh, and greed and desire for uberness too. In a way I envy the really super guilds (though I wouldn't want to spend the amount of time they do playing), because they are the only ones that get to see everything for the first time each expansion before it's up on 17 spoiler sites. EQ used to be a very nice home away from home for the casual player, now its either be leet or be a newb.

Eq was fun at lower levels because each time you killed a mob, you saw progress. You could play very casually and ding once a day, and LOVE the game. EQ starts to wear you down when it takes a week to see exp move, or more than 3 computers to ding in one day. It just becomes stale. I have to say though, even with that downside, I have never had more fun with a game as with EQ. Sub 35 was where it was at, fun fun fun/.

I think it’s the fact that the game play has become more of a job now than something fun to do. The last time people probably really had fun is when they did not have to worry about distributing loot, competing for spawns and kills, farming items for keys, flagging others that don’t have the ability to do it them selves, and listen to constant whining about we don’t raid enough or we raid to much type shit.
People love to live in the past. When EQ first cranked up, all the talk was about Ultima Online days. It's a delicate balance between bitching/whining and remembering the fun days gone by that keeps most players in a state of continual denial that their lives suck and that it's not the game but their miserable existance that sucks.
Woot! 3 day weekend coming up! 4 days for me. I'm looking forward to an extended weekend of whining about loot, complaining about raids and remembering how cool it was to kill baby mammoths in Everfrost 4 years ago.

And most of those times...I was stuck on the bow of the Arb's Bane (many of you may refer to it as the Maiden's Voyage)...
The early days were the best, i still remember as a level 10 druid with a friend wandering into lesser fay and running up to look at these cool little NPC's that were standing by this house and WHAM we were dead.
The problem we had was in early 99 there was not OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of people that had great knowledge of places and reses were unheard of, so off we go to get even see if we can find out were we died and were we gonna die again, those were the days of gut wrenching fun.
beginning of EQ kicked ass, no better feeling then the day i was lvl 15 in like 1999 and dvinn was runnin rampant in CB, buncha people soloin gang banged him and being the mage i got the shot and grabbed my godamnuberbadass draggon dirk, being that im a mage i obviously outdanmaged everyone, xzion is the 1st and only char i ever made
