SWG

Post by Rivera Bladestrike »

If its important to anyone (especially those who are pre-ordering it), make sure ya read this thread regarding Star Wars: Galaxies...

http://www.fohguild.org/forums/showthre ... eadid=7154

Just about all of its true (I'm in its Beta)... Its one of the worst games imaginable, and if you come from an EQ backround, its even worse.

As far as I know, the NDA is still in place so no one who's in beta can comment on the content of that thread atm.

I can't comment other than to say I found the following post interesting:
The only real fun will be watching all the asskissing lucas jackasses see their precious world completely fagged up more than the last two godawful movies have managed. SWG is about as fun as the maiden's Eye shardcamp if the ME mobs would hit harder, had more hps, death touch, and not give any exp or loot.

The real question is which feature is getting the axe next? I hope the next race gone is wookies. Holy fuck they have the worst player model ever seen. Hooray for a pukey texture thrown on top of a horrible model. I've played plenty of beta tests, there is never a "make the core gameplay mechanics more fun than masturbating with a cheese grater" patch. Patches fix things, sometimes add stuff, but they do not completely alter the scope and fun of the game.
The best post I saw on that thread was:

I'd like to add that the amount of people who are slurping on Blizzard's cock on the FoH boards is sickening. I don't care who got a private rimjob from Blizzard personnel, it's ridiculous to be that hyped about a game that's not even in a public beta yet.

Its 9 pages long atm Spang, I can give you an idea though....

SWG is terrible on every end, graphics, experience engine, the combat engine is horrid, controls, etc... you name it, and there is something horribly wrong with it. Whats a Star wars game without working Jedis? or space travel? or any high end content... Another major problem, item decay while your offline! OFFLINE! So while your over in Iraq, you come back and all your items are broken basically...

Someone put it this way...
SWG? is that the game with no uber items, no hp increase, no lvl, no uber skill, all n00b welcome, canceled Hutt, single char per server, and more pathetic, charge me 11 bucks for their freakin beta... while all other company let me download for free...

I'm cracking up over all the intellectual giants smashing their NDA's to shards while posting under their EQ character's names. Way to go Einsteins.

edit: can't stop laughing at furor accusing people that are defending SWG as being on SOE's payroll.

edit2: lol he said "$ony" doh

An unnamed Beta source told me the following:

I fucking hate the game. The only reason I've played it as much as I have is because I have friends who insist it can't be that bad and thought I needed to see more of it to get a better idea of the game.

In an effort to do just that, I decided to run across the entire planet of Naboo one night. As a level one character (or whatever levels/skills/masturbation/treadmills are called in SWG), I ran across the entire planet (took about 4 hours total). I saw all of the horrible looking 'bring-a-friend' mobs, all of the stupid ruins and camps across the planet. I think the characters and the landscape look spectacular, but THAT'S WHERE IT ENDS! Getting attacked by a group of 7 neon red frogs while you get into a crouched position to improve your pistol accuracy as they dogpile you is FUCKING STUPID. The game is far more like UO than EQ. The graphics are slightly better than AO for the most part. The game is extremely comparable to DAoC in that it has absolutlely no fun, no soul, and nothing to offer anyone aside from the extremely impressive character creation screens.

In short, I hate it.

I won't buy the game, I won't recommend the game!!!

Another major problem, item decay while your offline! OFFLINE! So while your over in Iraq, you come back and all your items are broken basically...
No, your items don't decay like that.
Nothing in your inventory, bank or on your body will decay while offline.

Your house, harvesters and other tools that require upkeep will deteriorate if you do not pay the upkeep fees.

The whole page is a massive NDA-breaking fest as it is.
I made a few comments on that thread but the game is just so awful, I couldn't care less if I get booted out of the beta.

I never had much desire to play SWG.
I got in beta and the graphics, scenery and characters were amazing.
That enjoyment lasted about 2 hours when I started to figure out how unfun the game really was.

I was just wondering what exactly is the major game play issue in this game? Of course this is for those people who don't care if they break there NDA. Is it that its not your style of play, that the style of play you prefer is just not that well done in this game, or that it just doesn't have any style of play at all and it's just a huge hodgepodge of elements glued together into a game. I am really curious and unfortunately was not in the beta. I hate seeing something that could be so good turn out so bad. So I'm just curious as to who it went bad. Seriously though for those that have played it and don't care about the NDA could you please give us a little bit more information on this. I was in the SWG board community early on about two years ago, but have lost touch and it sounds like something went horribly wrong during those two years.

edit: oh before you say go to the foh board, I can't. They are blocked here at work and not internet at home atm :(.

I am really curious and unfortunately was not in the beta.
If you applied, you'll probably get in.
It seems like testers are leaving en masse.

I hate seeing something that could be so good turn out so bad. So I'm just curious as to who it went bad.
You know how people used to joke around and say SWG was gonna suck because it was being produced by Verant/SOE and it would be exactly EQ in space?
It seems as if the developers have been trying their hardest to make the game NOT like Everquest in any way shape or form.

In that respect, I wish SWG was more like EQ.

It's just not fun.

It's impossible to convey why SWG is such a shitty game.

When I first got into beta, I was excited to see how everything was implemented. That excitement quickly grew to boredom.. literally within hours.

Every other MMOG I beta tested held my attention for an extended period of time... meaning that I would rather log on to beta then to play EQ (or AO). AC2, eventhough it turned out to be a pile of shit, kept me out of AO for days at a time. When I got into AO beta, the game was a complete and total mess, but I couldn't stop playing it. It was buggy and laggy as hell and had horrible server stability but I couldn't wait to log back on when the servers crashed.

When the SWG servers go down, or I crash... I go do something else and try to log back on in 3-4 days to see what items I lost and what skills are totally reset. The bug reporting tool used to crash my client.

Miir it sounds like what I thought might happen from the beginning. The team that developed this game was completely different from those that did EQ. While there are some people who worked on both projects, I do not believe that they had as much influence on the overall design direction.

It never felt like the overriding game style was combat, which is very sad. Now while many people say that combat isn't as important as crafting or the social aspects of the game, I tend to disagree. You need to have a rock solid combat system before you can build the other aspects of the game. From the beginning it seemed as if this game was designed for the casual gamer and left out the power gamer. Now I don't know if this is true or not, but from what I've read here and in tidbits from other places it sounds like this is true.

I really hope that this is not a spectacular failure, I think it would seriously hurt the MMO community. I mean if you can't make a good game out of Star Wars then what can you make a good game out of. Mostly the last few MMOs have been completely failures. I was really sad that the Sims Online was so bad, I really thought it would open up a new aspect of the MMO community and market. Oh well hope someone out there in the industry figured out how to make a good one soon :? .

They are simply trying to do too much at the same time. SWG is complete shit from what I've heard which doesn't surprise me one bit. You have SOE split 6 ways and it's next to fucking impossible to get the same concentration they had to make EQ. Planetside was a great game and can be a great game, BUT they rushed it out the fucking door without fixing half the problems wrong with it. Not to mention they slapped an insulting 12 dollar/month price tag on it. Next you have EQOA of which I beta tested. It was a decent game for PS2, though if you didn't have a keyboard, you for fucked. But the same thing happened, Sony which is known for giving away free modem use for the PS2 slapped a price on EQOA, that wasn't worth it at all. Even though you were with hundreds of other people, the lack of keyboards thoughout the player base made it feel just like a single player game with smarter teammates. Then comes in EQ2 which no one can comment on because its not in beta yet. Same thing with Lords of EQ. And finally, you have two expansions due for EQ. The company is big, no question, but it isn't that big to be doing all these projects. So you will be getting this half assed slew of games thrown at you with the SOE lable of approval on them only to lead to weeks upon weeks of patches and crashes.

On a side note, why the fuck is everyone getting so excited over WoW when it is the middle of May 2003 and the game doesn't come out until 2004?

I've been wondering the same thing. How many games have we saw hyped the past 2-3 years as EQ-Killers just to have them fail out of the gate. I'm not saying this will happen to Wow, in fact I doubt it will, but sheesh. Some are rather carried away over something they haven't played and wont even be able to for another year.

WoW has a fanbase that is still playing WC3 and awaiting the sequel due out this summer. Since WoW is basically a MMORPG of that exact world, many are basically playing an RTS version of WoW right now. I'm really looking forward to it as well, despite the fact that it is a year+ away. It's the only MMORPG that has gained my interest. Shadowbane/UO/DAoC/ect mean fuck all to me. Give me WarCraft and the Bizzard touch anyday.

I understand all of that, but I think a key thing to remember is that expertise in single player games does not necessarily translate into expertise with MMOGs. They're two different animals, and until people are actually playing it, it's all pretty pictures, familiar characters, and fluff. I'm sorry, I will not hop on the bandwagon for any game that I or someone I know well is not actively playing.

Here's the best way I can describe it...

I like M Knight Shyamalan's movies. He has a new film coming out that I know jack-shit about. However, I know that his movies tend to be enjoyable and he is working with many of the same people. It dosen't take a great leap in logic to assume I will enjoy his next film even though I know little or nothing about it. I just like his work and appreciate his style.

Same thing can be said about Blizzard and their games.

The thing is... Blizzard is well known for producing complete and fine tuned games, free of bugs. Rather than what we're used to, in 60% complete games full of bugs and crashes with SoE. That being said, most people believe that Blizzard's final product will be far better than anything SoE has produced.

Like the complete, bug free and fine tuned piece of shit that was Diablo 2?
Like the expansion packs that add features that should have been in the original game?
Blizzard has never done anything on the scale of a MMOG.

If id Software announced a MMOG would you jump all on their cock and proclaim that without a doubt it will be the best MMOG ever because they can make good shooters?

You're completely fucked in the head if you think Blizzard is going to release WoW as 'complete'.

Somewhere down the road in 2006, after WoW has been out for a while, can I take those words and shove em up your ass when you see the hoardes of whiners bitching about class balance and lack of end game content because they spent too many man hours creating newbie content?
Oh when people start pissing and moaning about how griffon rides take too fucking long and that they should have teleporters, or when they go LD on a griffin ride they plummet out of the sky, into the zone below and get the shit kicked out of them by some uber mobs?

You're head must be wedged up your ass if you don't think this game is going to have any major problems.

All I can say is that judging from the legions of drooling, preschool retards that populate the FOH forums, I'm probably gonna stay as far away from WoW as possible.... and Furor better not let people know who he is or he's gonna have hundreds of people hunting him down so the can grab a screenshot so they can shoot their load every time they look at it.

being said, most people believe that Blizzard's final product will be far better than anything SoE has produced.
Despite it's problems, EQ has given me far more fun and entertainment than any other game.

I think Blizzard makes good, enjoyable, relatively solid games. I've never had a problem running one, or playing one on any of my boxes and I've enjoyed them all to some degree. WC3 was actually a huge letdown but I think that probably had more to do with my being tired of RTS games than the game itself.

Having said all of that, Miir's point stands. An MMOG development is not the same as single player game (with MP tacked on) development. There will be exploits, balance issues, network problems at launch, patches, etc.

Even as conservative as Blizzard is with their software releases (how many times have they missed releasing before Christmas now?) there will still be issues.

Your analogy is an excellent one, Fairweather and I have similar feelings toward Blizzard. Those feelings will only translate into me saying at this point that I'm looking forward to trying the game either in beta, or at release.

So far all I've seen is some pretty pictures and some good ideas. The devil is in the details, and MMOGs are of a scope where there are a myriad of details.

Yeah battle.net is complete dogshit. I don't think you can draw conclusions or inferences about WoW using battle.net as an example though. Battle.net is essentially free, and since when does an intelligent company care about something they're not making money off of.
