I don't see why there is such a problem that Don Shula was hired. The man coached the coached one of the greatest NFL dynasty teams ever.
Who would you pick, a little-known assistant coach for a team which has been good the past few years, or a well known, high profile ex-head coach that led his team to the superbowl and dominated the NFL for several years? Pretty obvious choice, if I had to choose.

The former Crimson Tide quarterback, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Don Shula, was hired after Price was fired Saturday for off-the-field behavior.
The 37-year-old Shula has spent 15 years as an NFL assistant, including the past three as the Miami Dolphins' quarterbacks coach. He has no experience as a head coach or on a college staff.

Mike Shula played for Alabama also.
This is a HUGE deal here in Birmingham Alabama. The South and their football program and all.
After Jesse Jackson being down here and tell Alabama to hire a Black head coach, to be the first to do it was not a big help for the man they were looking at (also played for Alabama).
Basically Alabama good ol boys were looking for a former player from Bears days or reign.

Actually Croom, (the black they did interview) both played and coached under bear and coached when shula was a quarterback.
I felt they should have been bold in a time when it was required and hired Croom. None of the 3 they hired had head coaching experience and that was the 2nd qualification after a strong connection to the school. I know why they didn't hire Richard Williams, he was too old. I BELIEVE Shula was hired because he was younger and they somehow think that will make him more likely to stay if he's successful.
I honestly think when Jesse Jackson got involved it absolutely sunk any chance Croom had of being hired. Suprisingly though, all this controversy and I've not even seen one word from Croom.
The big story that's been overlooked in all this is that President Witt (the UA president for those not living here) stood up to the board of trustees told them he was firing Price against their wishes, did it and still remains president. Its the first time in my life I can remember someone standing up to a man named Bryant and telling him how the football program at UA was going to be run, that was a major win for the program and those that feel the good ole boys run things. Things are a changing. My only hope is they bring back Oz as the AD when Moore leaves/retires.
