Frustrations...

Post by noel »

I told a few of you I was going to put this together last night. Here's the post I just dropped on the Gameplay Feedback forum. Doubtful anything will come of it, but I'm betting the devs at least read it.

http://boards.station.sony.com/ubb/beta ... 09995.html
Disclaimer: This is not meant to be a negative post, or an I hate PS post. On the contrary, I really like PS. I've just been frustrated of late. Call it venting if you like, but bear in mind I think the dev's are doing a great job.

This I've been playing Planetside like a crack-fiend since the day I got into beta. I have to be honest when I say I've had an absolute blast. I like to think I've done pretty well. The outfit I lead on Markov has maintained the most outfit points in the TR empire for about two weeks now, and I play with a group of people that work well together, cover each other, and have a good understanding of the game.

When the lattice came out (no this isn't a remove the lattice system post), I was apprehensive about how it would affect the game. My chief concern was that it was going to take away our Outfit's freedom to operate independently. This has proven to be the case for the most part. My outfit listing tells me that we have 55 people, but I'm certain that we've never had more than 30 people online at one time (and this is rare). More often than not we have just under 20 people online, capping bases, and doing well. I know we play well. I'm certain of it. We get into situations where we're being hit with three times our numbers at a base we've decide to defend, and we can almost always hold it until the NTU silo runs out of energy or the enemy gives up. Sometimes we'll hit a base from several directions and have it under control in mere moments with a well executed surprise attack. Sometimes we lose; I don't mind losing if I feel like we at least fought well. I don't mind calling a retreat when we're completely overwhelmed. Without a doubt, the game can still be a lot of fun.

Lately however I've been frustrated, PS is starting to feel less like a game that rewards skill, and more like a game that rewards large Normandy-like invasions where attrition is a bigger enemy than a skilled opponent. Sure those battles can be awing in their sheer scale and chaos. The real question though, is are they fun, and are they what's best for the game.

The squad unit in the game, 10 people, is far too small. In most cases, 10 people aren't going to be able to make an impact against a force 3-4 times their size no matter what level of skill they possess. The game essentially now forces you to follow your empire's 'herd' from base to base. It honestly seems like you're no longer (or at least rarely) able to commplete the games objectives by being good. Instead, you need overwhelming numbers. To me, it's a disappointment, because at one time I felt the game was designed to reward players with more skill. I think the spawn timers are a good idea, but I think more needs to be done. I haven't been able to come up with a meaningful solution to my frustration with the mindless zerging going on now. I'm fairly certain I can offer solutions to the problems the lattice system was designed to prevent, solo hackers, etc. but not with the current system in place.

Command ranks lower than CR5 are a novelty at this point. Given that the squad unit is obsolete in the current game, any command rank ability that is squad only is useless. The only worthwhile command abilities are the ones that allow you to coordinate large numbers of your empires troops simultaneously. There needs to be better tools available in the game to command and control friendly forces. The scale of the game has changed due to the lattice system, but the tools available to commanders have not. There absolutely needs to be 'Outfit Waypoints'. Currently being an outfit leader has no tools available to him save the /outfit channel to help make his outfit successful. He can't see where his outfit members are on the map, only his squad mates, and he has no way to direct his outfit other than the /o channel.

This isn't a 'remove the lattice post', it's not an 'I'm not going to buy this game!!11!11' post, but it is a post to say that a few weeks ago, I was having the most fun I've had gaming in a long time, and over the last week or so, that fun has been greatly diminished. I think my biggest frustration comes from not knowing what to suggest to fix the problems I see in the game. I will continue to report bugs, and work on coming up with solutions. I love the idea of the game, and I have since I first heard about it over 4 years ago. I'm keeping the faith, but right now I'm frustrated.

I totally agree. This game has just gotten boring. In part, one of the things I think would be better is if we went to a smaller server such as Citrin (or whatever the hell it is now). The most fun I have had in this game is when we had that war for Gunuku (which is now baron thanks to the lattice system) and the Dev people were in on it. It was the Sunday where we reached the then pinnacle of 2100 people. Not only was that battle intense but I think it really showed what skill can accomplish. We did not have overwhelming numbers but we tried and tried and tried and finally succeeded. Now though, it is a game of numbers, and I fear it always will be from now on. And to put it plainly, if this game does not make dramatic changes between now and the release, I will not be playing this game.

Well tonight had its highlights. At one point I solo took a base. Was 5 v 1 straight up. They were agil/reinforced NC's. It was me in reinforced and my cycler, ohh and one boomer. Basically what I did was set up a boomer around the corner behind the outside of the base entrance. I zoom in and take out one right away. This ofcourse atracts his squad mates. Who start charging. I dispatch another while taking some fire, but not much at all (these guys were bad shots). They start to get close so I duck around the corner and bust the boomer trigger. Two round the corner and BAM, both of them dead. I take off running to behind a tree that was close. Reload, and repair my armor. I turn around the tree and the last guy was standing right there. I strafe-fight him, and win no problem (he ducked and tried to get aimed shots at me, while we're no more than 5 meters away). I head off into the base, hacking the front door, then continuing to the CC. Nobody else in sight.

The last guy I took out sent me a tell, "that was simply amazing, you took out my whole squad alone. We were too humbled and decided to respawn back at the sanct, thanks for showing me what CAN be done despite terrible odds." Well, it was too that effect atleast. The guy was very respectible.

Besides that, yes, this game has become a game of who has the most people and where. Very rarely will you find small skirmishes like the one I mentioned above. So on that note I'd have to say I agree with Aran.

Good post Aranuil, I'd have to agree on just about all the points you have presented. Up until yesterday when I was first able to see the lattice system in place, most of the combat was done by small forces taking a base. Last night I saw incredible forces numbering 50+ easily zerging bases, the mini-map was covered in torqoise. Once the base was captured, everyone looked at their maps to find the next base the swarm of locusts would attack next, and everyone repeated this until the continent was taken over.

OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of the changes they have made recently have sucked, but I was getting pretty bored of flying off to random base no.400 in the middle of nowhere and hacking it for as much xp as a huge firefight. I think the lattice is a good idea, but a) lag needs to be worked out, or there needs to be a zone limit and b) group organisation needs to start taking grip, at the moment we/them can't expect not to be zerged, because to be honest none of us are the least bit organised and there are OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of new players (not that the game takes long to learn).

Basically I think it's pretty optimistic for anyone to expect the level of co-ordination you've seen in whatever game you last played. This is what, 2 weeks? I know CS teams of 5 people that are still working on map/gaming strats after a year playing together. And this game has battles involving hundreds. I think there's a TON to be learned, none of us have touched the surface of how PS will be in a year. If you don't like the game you don't like the game, but for some fps fans it's got OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of potential. I guarantee you it'll have a pretty consistent following.

Frustrations aside...

Post by Sartori »

...I agree with the points and counterpoints, and the last couple nights I played were probably the least fun I've had in the game yet...

BUT - tonight I had a blast, and I think it might have to do with us working with Jerrith's Roughnecks to get things done rather than trying to accomplish everything ourselves. I think that's the first time I've seen Solsar locked by TR (while I was online anyways). Of course, I come from an EQ guild where allying was the norm post-Kunark, so I may be a little biased.

I'm still debating on buying this thing. Haven't decided if I will play in release yet. If the outfit gets into it I may be swayed.

We went on to lock Hossin for like... 30 seconds. Then the gay ass VS pulled some prank up at the north most base (cant remember name atm). So we lost lock, and never really got it re-locked.

We would have gotten it relocked, but Zprotoss and the Newb Conglomerate started rolling in, and we ended up having to fight on two fronts. Locking Hossin was probably my favorite thing I've done in PS. I didn't give a shit about Exp last night. I think I missed all but one of the base caps we got last night. I was flying from base to tower to tower in my mosquito, hacking everything in sight. Then I got an AMS up just north of Zotz right as the battle shifted to the battle for Zotz. Then I was hunting enemy AMSes.

It was an incredible battle. Hacking their AMS in the middle of one of the biggest firefights I've seen was just incredible. At one point, I was standing at an AMS with Jerrith, puddle, and one of the other outfit leaders. Some player sends me a /tell 'Wow, all the big names are here!' I replied with, 'We really want this C-lock. I managed to sneak into the courtyard they were defending, and take out no less than 5 enemies while identifying the CY location of their AMS. It was incredible.

So it was fun last night, and I learned a few things that I think we can apply in the future. ;)

PlanetSide can be a game that is fun some days, and exceedingly boring on others. I think theyre REALLY missing out on the RPG side of the game. There needs to be a hella lot of more opertunities to specialize your charcter. What makes you different from any other adv hacker or sniper out there? Nada. You try every cert, every vehicle, get BR20, and you're left with just the fun of winning bases and possibly continents. It's just lacking too much to put all in one post. I guess that's just my EverQuest side coming out of me. But they are missing out on a great opertunity to make a more addictive game if they had more specialization opertunities with more certs, implants, guns, etc, so people wouldnt finish and stop playing in a month as most people have done. Just my 2 cents =P

P.S. Yes i typed it all on my own!
I got laid less when i used a Pentium. I talk about my AMD and how it has 8 data channels instead of 6 and why AMD's QuantiSpeed Architecture easily out-performs Intel's Hyperthreading technology. Suffice to say that it gets the chicks all hot and flustered...
