X-Men United has been referred to as Briyan Singer's "Empire Strikes Back". Everything I have heard about the movie leads me to believe it will be a much better movie than the first one. One of the main reasons is that the core characters were introduced and established in the first film, so now they can work on character interactions and add depth to both the team and the individual members.

I can't wait!

Much, much better than the first film. An excellent movie by all standards, even if X-Men don't really interest you. I was really impressed, and enjoyed it immensely. Nightcrawler was my favorite character I think - Alan Cumming did a superb job as him.

The movie completely rocked. I was told the pacing was off in the first half - but completely disagree. I loved X1 and this was much much better. Magneto has always been my favourite X-man charater and Ian McKellen playing him gives me wood. He shined huge in this film. Nightcrawler.... wow. The actor really nailed him and the special effects of him fighting, well it has to one of the coolest small scale fight scenes to date.

Wolverine, much much better played in this film than in the frst, or more correctly stated, much better written. Bunch of cameos from some of our other favourites. Colosus makes a brief but enjoyable appearance, the only problem with which is that if they expand his role at some time, they'll need to hire an real actor, not an extra, so his appearance will change.

The two duds, as with last time, Hale Barry and whatever no-name plays rogue. God awful as X1, but luckily with rogue at least, her screen time is much reduced from X1.

Gean Grey - very well done. Don't want to discuss too much here.

Patrick Stewart - plays Xavier as well as last time. Unfortunately for him, Xavier is rarely an interesting character, even if pivotal. Not anyone's fault and it can't be changed and keep the X-man true. It may also be just me, as I don't identify with his philosophy at all. If I were in their possition, I would be much more akin to Magneto, if less far reaching in my goals.

Aye, I found X2 much better than the first one in pretty much every way. I did not like the first one since they tried to introduce the characters, while also throwing them into a save the world scenario in a short period of time which based on what little you learn of them in the movie kind of sucked.

The second one put a lot more effort into actually developing the characters through the plot/storyline which worked a lot better I thought. Not to mention I think the acting and casting in this one was excellent which only helped even more.

As to the characters in this movie; I thought that Hugh Jackman played Wolverine very well again and was a great pick to play the part. Magneto, Professor X and Cyclops all played their roles well in addition, however the character I liked the most in this one had to be Jean Grey. Partly since I think she is acted very well and also since they elaborated on her character a lot more in this movie than the first one. Counter to this was continuing bland performances by Storm and Rogue. I can't decide if I dislike Storm so much because Halle Berry acts her so poorly or because she has such cheesy lines..Someone I have not seen mentioned is Mystique, although she does not have many lines in the movie she is does put in good performances in the fight scenes and has some comedy tossed in as well. It's to bad they did not get to elaborate on Lady Deathstrike either, she seemed like a interesting counter to Wolverine ><

It was actually better than I thought it would be, and I had high expectations.

I thought Mistique was one of the coolest things in the film. She was essential to all the most important sub-plots and she just looks damn good.

That opening scene with Nightcrawler is one of the coolest things in movie history. He's all that and a bag of chips! Wolverine going into his beserker rage was also fantastic to see. I was happy to see they didn't pussy-foot around with his rage and have him simply wounding/disarming everyone. He killed OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of people.

There were OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of Easter Eggs in the film as well. I'll post the few I saw for certian.

SPOILER ALERT:

--When Mistique was in the government building looking through the computer system for Magneto's information, one of the other names in the list was Remey (Gambit).

--When the film panned over the wall of X-rays that contained various attempts to mix adamantium to bones, there was an X-ray of the upper right shoulder of a man, with dozens of razors imbedded in his "wing". (Angel/Archangel)

--At one point there is a news reporter on TV talking with a scientist. That scientist is Hank McCoy (Beast).

--The obvious Pheonix reference that only an X-Fan would notice at the end. When the credits were rolling, the theater was full of a hundred guys telling a hundred girlfriends why that was so cool, while trying not too sound too excited or dorky. We all failed.

There were plenty more that I missed, I'm sure. Great flick.

The length of the movie was also superb. The thing I didn't like about the first one is that it was a shade under an hour and a half. This one was two hours but it felt like it was approaching 3 hours. Storm really wasn't played too bad. In the comic/cartoon she was very emotionless and dry. Halle Barie (sp) did a decent job at portraying that.

Mutant 143, aka "Jason" I believe is an old villain from X-men comics called Mastermind!. Took me a while to figure this out, but i went thru some old X-Men collector's cards and found him under villains.

It said on the back of the card his real name: Jason!! and his super power is creating vivid Illusions. Aha!!

So with the real name and super power being the same, I am guessing that Stryker's son "Jason" is the movie's version of Mastermind. Mastermind was in a bunch of comics, and i remember him from them, but did not put it all together.

Went to see this early on Friday. I was absolutely blown away - it's so superior to the first (which I really enjoyed). I was never the biggest Nightcrawler fan when I read the comics (sorry!), but they did him so perfectly and he made the opening sequence incredible to watch - I'll just say that I think he translated to the screen much better than I expected.

SMALL SPOILER FOLLOWS:

I can't wait to see Phoenix :P

And then there was the Matrix trailor. Holy. Shit.

I thought the movie was good, better than the first. Nice to see a female in the heroic sacrifice role at the end of a flick.

Fairweather you said just about everything I was going to, and prolly much better than I would have :P
I absolutely loved all the cameos and references to othe popular Mutants.
This is surely the best superhero movie I have ever seen, and yeah I can't wait for Phoenix too, and I wonder if the end of 3 will give us a glimpse of Dark Phoenix. And Nightcrawler ALONE was worth the price of the ticket.
My only small nitpick was that Rogue (one of my favorites from the comic) was never as useless as she is portrayed in the movie. Vulnerable, melancholy, still a little girl inside, YES, but in the comic she had absorbed the full memories and powers of an adult superheroine names Ms. Marvel. This gave her flight and super strength and toughness along with her absorption powers and made her a real asskicker (as well as a cool inner struggle with her absorbed persona). She saved X-Men ass many times. In the movie pretty much all she does is put out a fire and pull a wobbly last minute rescue in the jet. That's the ONLY flaw I could find really, and it's not much because she's still a cool and likeable character.
Jesus, 2 1/2 hours went by and I didn't even THINK of a cigarette! :P

I think Rogue is supposed to be young yet, Mumble. I don't think her powers have 'developed'.

Great flick.

My wife asked me why I was grinning when we left the theatre. Fairwether is right, it's impossible to explain the significance of the last scene without looking like a comic-book geek.

Nightcrawler, just about the truest depiction of a superhero in film I have ever seen.

I'm glad this wasn't another hour and a half-long movie. The whole tamale holds up so much better when you have time to flesh out the characters more.

And The Matrix trailer kicked ass. I know where I will be on the fifteenth.

One of the things I think he's been doing right in these movies so far is not rushing to develope everyone, he's leaving some things for other movies where it can be given some focus instead of packing it all in. Rogue is not developed just like storm was OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS less powerfull in the first movie, and he's waiting until the third movie to get around to pheonix. OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of director's would have either had her become pheonix in the first one or just left it out. Could be in a future movie when rogue absorbs the memories and whatnot.

Not really a spoiler for the next movie but I'll link the picture instead of post it here if you want to see a scene that will probably be near the beginning of X-Men 3.

BTW, Phoenix is a badass. Consumes entire planets (ala Galactus) to fuel her power. Should be a great 3rd movie : )

I was giving this a lot of thought actually. You're partially right Xo, Mumble touched on why.

The problem with Anna's depiction of rogue, is more likely not her depiction, but instead the expectations of the average X-fan. We all know her as the super-powered rogue with the powers of Ms. Marvel which include flight, and super strength. She kicked her fair share of ass, and she had quite a bit of swagger, and panache (that was more likely a front to hide the insecurity she felt about herself).

The movie representation of Rogue is a Rogue before all of that. A young girl who can't touch or kiss the people she loves for fear of killing them. As such, seeing her quiet and shy should be expected.

In light of this thinking, I'm going to say her performance wasn't bad at all, instead expectations made it bad.
