Leper Canadians?

Post by Metanis »

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... toronto_dc
"Shunned in Canada and the U.S. alike, Torontonians increasingly feel like lepers," read one headline in the Globe and Mail newspaper.
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... ia_who_col
WHO said that after assessing SARS outbreaks in Beijing, Shanxi Province, and Toronto, it was "recommending, as a measure of precaution, that persons planning to travel to these destinations consider postponing all but essential travel."
Even Canandians don't deserve this crap :(

Conspiricy Theory
**********************
This whole SARS thging has been cooked up by the Turk Govt. as a way to eliminate China(Beijing) and Toronto from the 2008 Olympics!! they felt shafted that it came down to these 2 cities and decided to do something about it.

They cooked up this virus in the deepest, darkest cave in the country and then released it on the 2 unsuspecting cities. As 2008 approaches, the virus will have all but decimated China and Toronto(the rest of canada will be mysteriously unaffected) and the IOC will have no choice but to hold the games in Turkey. If Paris or Osaka start acting up, they too will fall under the attack of planted turk public coughers!

The Butcher's Bill...

http://www.who.int/csr/sarscountry/2003_04_23/en/

WTF up with Canada's Death Rate...damn near 10% and a local chain of spread? Hopefully y'all are just more accurately identifying deaths caused by it...China cannot have that much better health care than Canada...

I have a couple of rooms in Louisiana for all my Canadian Friends...But don't freakin touch a damn thing on the way down here!...

It doesn't really have anything to do with quality of health care. If you get SARS then you are pretty much in the hands of fate because you are either gonna die from it or you aren't.

It's probably a mutation of a Chinese type of influenza so the Chinese are naturally slightly more resistant to it.

Also the WHO is fingering China for covering up a lot of SARS deaths so who knows what their mortality rate really is.

The reason such a high percentage of deaths due to SARS is beacuse mostly elderly people and health care professionals are contracting it.
SARS is not out being spread through the populace in Toronto. It's mostly confined to hospitals.

Look at the ages of the SARS fatalities in Toronto/Canada.
Has anyone under the age of 70 deid from SARS in Canada?
Health Canada wrote:Since April 18, 2003, seven additional probable cases of SARS and one death have been reported in Canada. A total of 139 individuals who meet the probable case definition and 177 who meet the suspect case definition of SARS have been reported, including 14 deaths. In addition to British Columbia and Ontario, which are reporting probable cases, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island are also reporting suspect cases of SARS (Table 1).

At the present time, the case fatality rate in Canada is estimated at approximately 4.4% of probable or suspect cases (14 of 316 probable or suspect cases). Most of the case fatalities occurred in patients with underlying illness, and nearly all were elderly patients over the age of 70 years.

Because it is being spread to old, sick people in hospitals.
It is not being spread through the community like it is in China.
If a healthy individual age 15-50 contracts SARS, the chance of them fully recovering within a week or two is pretty damn close to 100%.
SARS to that age group is no more a risk of death than the flu.

In China, a high percentage of the reported SARS cases fall into that age group.

I wish I could somehow shoot you with an intelligence gun or give you a smart pill Spang that would work just long enough for me to explain to you what I meant by saying what I said, but sadly nothing like that exists. I fear my efforts of bouncing education off your thick skull would be completley wasted, but here it goes anyway.

There is no medical defense against SARS right now. That is why it is called SARS (sever acute respiratory syndrome). At any given time you can just simply stop breathing and 30 seconds later you are dead. There is nothing anyone can do about it. So it's not something that is treatable beyond quarantining people and giving them standard influenza treatments (keeping people hydrated etc.)

So yeah, you either die from it, or you don't. Nobody has any control over it, and the quality of health care that you can get isn't a reflection on the mortality rate of the victims.

Let me know if you are having any further problems and I will try to add in some "duh's" and "umm's" in random places to give your brain a chance to keep up.

I'm pretty sure it's mostly misidentification in China, Vietnam etc...Was just ribbing y'all...:P

Still, seems odd that we are seeing so few cases per capita so far while y'all are relatively inundated...Does Canada have a higher % of ethnically oriental folks than we do hence more potential vectoring through travel?

Care for these patients is pretty fundamental once identified...treat symptoms etc...Whats Canada's immunization like typically? Do y'all tend to get annual Flu vaccines, Pneumonia Vaccines? Trying to sort out why Canada and not us...

Because Toronto and Vancouver have enormous Chinese communities, many of whom travel back and forth from Hong Kong and Beijing.

Ok that plus the relatively less restricted between China and Canada makes sense...knew it had to be something like that...

What's really odd is that other known influenza strains killed about five times as many people in Canada last year.

I guess it's that SARS has a snazzy new name or something, but there seems to be a huge tempest in a teacup over the whole thing.

The death rate is tied largely to the elderly, those who are already sick, and the very young. Pretty much like any disease, these are the ones who will have the highest mortality rate as their immune systems are the weakest. It is much the same as the West Nile and other infectious diseases and viruses. You can still die from it if you are healthy, but the odds are much more in your favor.
