Disembodied eyes

Post by Lalanae »

Can anyone recall any movies in which a disembodied eye, or an extreme close up of a single eye figures? (and please don'y say LotR)

I know Hitchcock uses a disembodied eye in the opening credits of Vertigo, but I'm looking for other instances in film.

I can only really think of two things.
Requiem for a Dream (Movie is so jacked up...) and Fire in the Sky, both have close ups for the eye.

"Fire in the Sky" had some extreme eyeball closeups during a couple of the scenes where the aliens were "probing" DB Sweeney.

Demolition man (eye on a pencil)

Minority Report (Tom Cruise's eye a couple of times I think...)

The Ring? (I could swear it showed the eye at several points)

I'll think of more later...

Friday the 13th Part III (Originally in 3D) Eyeball on the end of the old guys finger.

Think he was saying something like "Your doomed! DOOMED!" or something equally as cliche'.

Also, that guy named Rick has his head crushed by Jason, and his eye pops out at the camera.

You really just rose the bar for the quality of this conversation, didn't you? :)

I don't remember The Ring showing eyes like this... just the "ring", the white circle on black.

Oh, and to add a possible example, 2001, when he's going through the monolith. I believe there were some extreme close-ups on his eye there.

Could you describe it for me?

I'm not looking for things *happening* to/with eyes, just static close-ups of single eyes, with nothing else in the frame.

Iirc, there's a razorblade in the scene and it probably won't suit your needs.

You can find some description from the link, but basically, 'something happens to the eye' (gets slit), so, indeed, overall it was not what you intended - though, briefly, the eye is in close up, as you stipulate.

Maybe I'm not remembering right, but didn't Hitchcock also use a close-up of the eye of the girl that was killed in the shower in Psycho?

Edit: Just checked, it's there. Right after she's killed, the camera follows the blood down to the drain, then morphs from the shower drain to a close-up of her open eye, then slowly pans out to show her lifeless body.

Beast Master had one in a ring.

For some reason I think of the old black & white Nightmare Theatre kind of movies that they used to show late saturday nights.

Maybe an Outerlimits episode.

Why do you need an eyeball close up again?

Evil Dead 2. When they are trying to stuff the witch back into the basement, her head gets caught in the trap door and the eye flys all the way across the room into that screaming chick's mouth. Sublime I tell you. Sublime.

The disembodied (not necessarily literal) eye is a common scopophilic symbol in cinema to the point of almost being cliche.

There are a couple famous "eye shots" in Psycho, most notably the one you mention Shaerra (the other being from the wrong POV). Considering I studied the film in school, I'm not sure why it escaped me at the time I posted...

Thanks to all, and any others who post. You've given me a couple good examples of contemporary film, which is what I was hoping for.

eye shots frequently pop out in movies where they show eye scans, when needed to open the door let's say

From memory I think we had those in Bourne's identity or some other spy flick, Bond?
and that flick with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sean Connery, name escapes me, they needed an eye scan to open vault in bank in Malaysia
