What's your scariest nightmares?
I think nightmares are very interesting. My wife thinks I am crazy because I have a nightmare almost every night. I think it's because I will myself to have them just for the pure enjoyment. It's the only time I am 100% scared because when you are dreaming it, it seems real. I get more thrill out of a good nightmare than I do watching a horror flick, I am not sure I can even explain it correctly, it's just....fun. I guess it's because you are completely immersed in the horror, and cannot shake it like you can when you get caught up in a good book and have to take a look up from the page.
My scariest nightmares always involve massive natural disasters. A tornadoe looming in the distance that ALWAYS comes towards me, or being in the middle of New York city and seeing the classic wall of water coming towards me. Last night I was floating down a river on a raft with a couple of those camouflage at will aliens from the movie SIGNS stalking me on the banks, but water did not harm these guys.
My nightmares usually come in waves too. Usually 2-3 a night, I don't know much about dreams but I guess dreaming in multiples is normal. I suppose if I did not enjoy them I could just will myself to stop having them, I dunno. But that's besides the point, I like them, so they are here to stay. When you have a nightmare, no horror director can hold a candle to what your mind can conjure up. Even the most silly settings can conjur up maximum horror from your psyche.
No doubt this all translates into me being a flaming closet homosexual, but besides that, whats your scariest nightmares?

Damn, that sounds like a really good idea, haha, I haven't been scared by a movie in years, I should try to induce nightmares.
I have huge trouble remembering any of my dreams though so I don't know how well this would work =/

Interesting excercise in self Hypnosis. I would have to say that the post apocolyptic ones are always the most interesting (not mad max, more along the lines of Lucifer's Hammer style) but natural disaster ones are the ones that stick with me the longest. Back when I had a serious fear of hieghts, I used to have dreams about falling endlessly, but those kinda sucked and were lame.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Air, atmosphere or the interior of a room show the dreamer’s state of mind. A tornado indicates mental stress or mental clutter. The fact that you have been having these dreams for a year indicates that your environment changed in some way to cause this stress. The dream is asking you to point out the source of the stress to others (presumably those who can help or are part of the cause).
Tidal Waves often reflect sweeping changes
I hadn't woken up from nightmare in years - until two days before the war started. I delivered a package to some unnamed metropolis, then called my client's cell on the way out of town . The phone rang once, and then there was a blinding flash. In my rearview mirror I saw a mushroom cloud rising from the city.
Sounds like cheap fiction, but I haven't been that startled in years.

I once had a nightmare about Sony's CS department. They never got anything right, took forever to respond, and suck at CS.
Oh wait, that's a reality

As far as movie-nightmares go, the doll Chucky from Child's Play always used to pop up. Never could kill that bastard. However most of my nightmares don't seem to make sense in the least. I won't get into detail but usually they involve stalkers or vampires or something stupid going after me or other people.
My worst nightmare is when I dream that I wake up and go to the bathroom for a drink, and when I turn on the light, my face is still disfigured from the accident where my fuckbuddy drove us off a bridge. Then Sophia turns into Julie and back into Sophia.

As far as nightmares go I had a fucked up one this afternoon upon an unplanned nap. I was with some porn star (FYI, I never have these dreams, this is why this is so fucking weird) and every fucking time I was about to get lucky, something happens where I have to leave the room. Phone rings, friends walk in, etc. This goes on and on in about 5 different scenarios until she asks to tie me up. I'm thinking omg this is it, then my fucking roommate walks in the house IRL slamming the door waking me up. This would make for a pretty funny SNL skit or otherwise, however, I didn't find it too amusing.

My usual nightmare involves me in Hell.. actual hell.. complete with fire, brimstone, tortue and demonic entities.. usually either I'm being tortured, fighting them, or trying to do somthing to keep them from getting out of Hell and into the real world.
However.
My most horrific nightmare came from just last september. And trust me, I've had some doozys. Technically, it wasn't a nightmare... more like a hallucination... but it felt so real.. the feeling of loss, the horror, the fact that I "remembered" seeing things happen. The setting: diagnosed with pneumonia earlier that day, had had ZERO sleep the previous night. Passed out around 10pm watching TV. Woke up very shortly after, but I wasn't "awake". Was running a fever of over 104.. I was still seeing the events in my head, which scared the fuck out of me... I could still "feel" the blood on me.
Anyways. Dream took place in 20023. Somehow, armegeddon happened but happened bad.. like before it was supposed to. The Rapture didn't happen, none of the biblical stuff.. we (humans) were responsibile for breaking open the gate into Hell and letting out the beast in 2005.. like flipping a switch...
I dreamed I was an enforcer in a new empire.. didn't want the job, just happened to be good at it.. the old governments had collapsed, this new empire had taken over the majority of northern america.. anyways.. I had these visions / memories.. total anarchy in major city streets.. blood, death.. people killin each other by any means available.. women being crucified then raped.. babies having their skulls crushed open with maces.. people being shoved into fans and shredders as punishments fo anything.. or just because.. nothing left of the western part of america but shattered buildings, fires, and crucified corpses..
It was horrid.. but I was "seeing" all this at the same time as I was being drug out of my chair where I'd fallen asleep.. scared shitless.. damn near was drug to the ER.. my fiancee got me cooled down with some liberal use of a icepack and washcloth.. even when she made me eat a little bit later it felt like I LITERALLY hadn't been able toe at in months..
Still creeps me out.

My worst nightmares involve things going bad at work in my glove box... like it exploding, or tearing a glove while I'm not there and destroying my last 6 months of work. That and imagining glass/needle cuts on my hands. I hate those mental images.

Can't say these don't make sense for me. Where did you find this?kyoukan type-R wrote:Air, atmosphere or the interior of a room show the dreamer’s state of mind. The ones that get me are when you are in a no win situation, like you have to choose which one of your kids lives and which one don't... I really hate those, I wake up in a cold sweat every time... luckily I haven't had one of those in months. For myself, All the others like falling, Demons, monsters are kinda funny.... I don't wake up shaking on those, it's more like "Weeeee Doggggie that was Fucked up!!"
I'm also not too fond of the dreams where your trapped and cant move.... those kinda blow.

Not true nightmares, per se, but certainly some of the more heart-pounding/suspenseful dreams I had were the ones where I imagined myself somehow in Soviet Russian. Many of you are too young to know or appreciate the Cold War, but I must say, duck and cover drills, fall out shelter signs, the arms race, coverage of spy cases, and the media coverage in general all made for a feeling of impending doom, with the USSR as the ultimate enemy: and I guess those feelings would creep their way into my subconscious every now and again. The setting always had a stark, industrial feeling (not unlike Sting's "Russian's" video, which I must say gave me chills first time I saw it), and I would somehow find myself in this foreign land (who knows why), but as yet undetected, trying to make my way to a safehouse, or a border, or an embassy, or something.
Maybe once a year, I revisit that dream type, but they are now more of the retro status of dreams, the ones that crop up very rarely, but often enough to keep them from being erased from the memory bank - sorta like the one where I am working for Domino's Pizza again.

I don't remember my dreams much. But there's one that I will NEVER forget. I wake up one morning, alarm going off, but there's no sun up. So I go to the window and look outside and all I see is DARK clouds everywhere. Then, I see an angel fall from the sky and land in my front yard. Instantly, black hands erupt from the ground and pull the angel down through it. Right before his head goes under he looks at me and says, "run." But he said it so dire that I basically go into instinct mode and turn and run. Right as I turn around I come face to face with nothingness, except for two, red, pounding eyes, and a breathing sound. It stopped me dead in my tracks. Now, keep in mind, this "monster" is completely see through, looks like glass, but you can completely tell that there is something there. Especially because of the big, red, looming eyes.
I jump backwords through my window and fall to the ground. This thing then "stands up" and breaks through my roof and through all my walls. Just before I take off running, I look up through the clouds and see angels battling darkened figures. I get up and take off running. As I run over the spot where the angel was sucked into the ground, I get tangled up in hands that instantly shoot up and trip me. The red eyed creature then comes charging at me. It picks me up, and from a third person view, I see myself get torn from limb to limb, and eaten alive by this thing.
I then wake up in a white room surrounded by people. I look around and notice we all have white wings. I sit up and am given a sword and a shield, and am told to go out and battle the demons. I fly from the room towards earth (a green speck) in the distance. As I'm flying there, other people around me are being shot down by this black like substance. I reach earth and it is total chaos. No humans are in sight, at all. No animals, everything that was once living is now dead. There are zombies walking around, demons, ghosts, everything you can think of in a biblical holocaust. I walk around wading through these things. It seems like I am untouchable, then I see it. The red eye'd glass monster. I charge at it, cutting into it trying to rid the now psuedo-world from it. It snatches me from the air and again I go to a third person view seeing myself get torn from limb to limb.
This time, I wake up, my whole body tingeling. I couldn't move, at all. I was awake, yet stuck like this for a good hour or so. I couldn't move at all. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it was going to burst or something.
Ever since then, it's really hard for me to get to sleep, really bad insomnia all the time. My left shoulder still tingles. I've gone to the doctor for it, and they said I have a weird nerve pinch that's basically impossible to work through. How I did it, I don't know, but I chalk it up to that nightmare. Anyone else had permanent damage done to them because of a dream? Maybe this is why people very rarely "die" in their dreams.

Mine are seated in reality a lot of times...and my brain won't let things get too out of whack or it takes over and corrects the issue.
Like one time I was dreaming I was at the grocery store, and these guys were following me in dark suits...I started to run home but I didn't want them to know where I lived so I ran the opposite way....then I tripped on a sidewalk crack and they caught up...they were russians...they wanted american change to use the pay phone. (Because why would people in black suits with foreign accents chase me?)
Or like last night I dreamt I lived in a ghetto-ish area near a college university and I was having a housewarming party and my whole family was there, well next thing I knew a bunch of people from the university and members of my family were on the porch singing some R&B music, seeing my uncle sing R&B is quite scary.
Sometimes I play several roles in my dreams like one time I was both an FBI agent and also a serial killer that the FBI agent was chasing. Anyway the FBI agent-self shot the killer-self in the head and I died.....but then I was like..WTF I can't be dead because I'm watching me die...so I wiped the bullet hole off my forehead got up and started running again.
The only reoccuring dream I have is probably the most fucked up...some midget keeps grabbing me by my hair and spinning in circles then when I get lots of speed up he lets me loose to fly through the air, I try and stop myself by grabbing on grass and trees etc...but all that does is make me pivot like say he grabs my feet to spin me, then I grab grass during my flight instead of being head first, I'm feet first now.
Similar dreams where I can't seem to stay on the ground like running across the ground in a low-gravity enviroment where the pressure from my feet running causes me to float off for a good distance before being pulled back down.
A couple weeks ago I dreamt some kid ran his supercross bike off a cliff and I went to help him so I climbed down the cliff and some juice stuff was seepign out of a crack in a rock, I fell down and woke up 2 days later unharmed next to the kid, so I climbed back up the cliff with him on my shoulder but the terrain was all different, I was int he middle of nowhere and to get back I had to jump across a huge chasm with him on my back....luckily it turned out the reason I didn't die in the fall and could climb a cliff with a dude on my back was because that wasn't normal goop in the rock. So I took a running leap....yeah um...if your not used to jumping 500 feet across a 200 ft deep chasm....it's quite distressing...especially if your not quite sure if you can stick the landing. Yeah that's not realistic to get super-powers..but the realistic part was I wasn't quite sure what my limits were...and those limits were going to get me killed. I woke up right before I hit the cliff on the other side...I don't think I was going to make it.
Basically you know those dreams where you falling and it makes you wake up? I get those OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS. There have been several nights where I had over 50 instances of falling in my dream causing me to wake up.

the scariest nightmare I had so far was back when I was about 15 or 16 and it involved my father trying to kill me
it was in a war like scenario, at night and I remember running down some street, ducking behind parked cars and hearing my father's footsteps behind me
I remember falling many times, franticaly trying to stand up and keep running, my hands and knees bleeding but I felt no pain at all
that nightmare haunted me at least 3 or 4 times within about a year, once I stopped living with my folks I never had that dream again

I had one a couple weeks ago. I heard a deep voice say, don't turn around. My eyes were open, but I couldn't move. Part of me was scared shitless, but I still tried to "turn around" Took me a bit, but I finally turned around to see....Anyone ever have sleep paralysis? It as happened twice to me in my lifetime, and both times it scared me pretty bad. It's a condition where you have semi-conciousness and your eyes are open, but you cannot move. Both times it happened to me it lasted about 30 minutes. Scary stuff.

nothing. That's when I really woke up.
I have this one a lot (at least twice a month)... (this is the reality part) I relive the burglary I experienced in SanAntonio in 1995... this guy woke me up as he was breaking in thru my patio door and I grabbed my Para Ordnance P14-45 and stood there in the middle of the room talking to 911 on the phone...
the dude slides the door open and pushes the curtain aside and steps in... he see's me, and reaches in his right hand coat pocket and pulls out a (I found out later) CHarter Arms .44 magnum revolver... I saw that shiny nickel reflect the light from the street light outside and put a hot-loaded Gold Dot hollow point thru his right shoulder and disabled that fucker in an instant... the cops were at my house in about 3 seconds, because this guy had already attempted several burglaries in the same apartment complex that night, the cops had recieved at least 4 called before he even made it to my house... this kid was SO HIGH... he had headphones on, blaring some kinda rap music, totally oblivious to the amount of noise he was making as he was breakign the lock... fucktard...
In my dream, sometimes he gets a shot off and hits me square in the chest... sometimes he misses me and shoots my son thru the wall with a stray bullet, sometimes it happens exactly like real life (thankfully), sometimes I miss his shoulder and I shoot him in the neck, sometimes in the head, sometimes I hit him in the chest, hell, sometimes he even decides to skip my house and I stand in the dark waiting... and once, I took a shot, missed, and I plugged a cop that was sneaking up on the burglar outside my house...
Other bad ones...
Sometimes I dream that I am still married to ex-wife number 1
Sometimes I dream that I am still married to ex-wife number 2
Sometimes I dream that I am married to wife number 3

Last night I dreamt I was al drunk with my brother and some chick in a "hoopdie" well the chick gets a call and it turns out it's snoop dogs ride and he is comming to pick it up, he gets in and he is stoned as all hell and the cops turn thier lights on the instant he tries to move the car.
Well he takes off so fast that front end of the car lifts off the ground and the car is skaking so hard from the power that I can't hardly see...he's driving through parking lots and making turns at like 80 MPH (normally not a scary speed but when your driving around people in parking lots it's bad) anyway he slams against a fence and I pop out of the car real quick somehow so does my brother, only snoop is left in the car (I don't know where the chick is anymore, I forget about her existance) anyway I debate climing over the fence but the cops round the corner so I walk slowly like I was just walking through the parking lot...when I come up to this tree and all these flies are buzzing around my face and I look down and there is this dead body there that has been rotten a while.
Some chick that works in the store explains to me the girl was having allergy problems and left w/o her contacts in and got lost but she is in intensive care now..and I was like "so what's with this body then? Who is this?" and then I remembered the girl wasn't out of the car and she wasn't with snoop so that was odd....I woke up because the dream was not beleivable.
BTW No, I am not a snoop dog fan.

Ahmik, I have the ex nightmare too. Being married to my ex husband is probably the worst recurring nightmare I've ever had. Had one last night in fact. :/
Other recurring ones include sharks (altho not in awhile) and driving a car when either I can't see or the road curves up like a roller coaster.
Nightmares are always stress-related but helpful if you are intuitive enough to recognize which dreams signal unconsious stress in certain areas of your life.

My other recurring dreams involve being back in High School or being naked in public.
And the dream with snoops was not believable because the story about the corpse didn't involve a corpse and because the girl disappeared from the car.
The rest was very beleivable, even the fact I met Snoop Dog was realistic, because of the business relationships I have.

Was in bed one night, and was trying to go to sleep. I was almost asleep when a chill came over me. I closed my eyes, not sure what caused the chill. When I opened them (room is dark), I see a dark object peeking in my door. My body stiffened and my heart began to race. I closed my eye enough to appear asleep but keeping an eye on this figure. As this figure comes into my room, my curtains start to wave and my seeks seem to levitate a few inches above my body. The figure now enters my room. I still have my eyes partically open, but appear closed. Wind seems to blow around in my room as if I was in a wind tunnel. The figure ( picture blured face, dark scraggly hair, old white gown ) floats into my room. It seem to be cautious as to make sure I was asleep and not to wake me. It float around the foot of my bed and around to the side closest to the wall with my night stand. It then levitates beside my bed, looking over me. At this point im am about to wet myself, but curiousity keeps me looking at this female? creature. As it begins to move what appears to be hands closer to me, I make myself move my legs in the covers. Immediately it pulls back, wait a little while, and then reaches again. This time I move my whole body and act as though im about to wake up. The figure then ducks down below sight level and I assume that is it below the edge of my bed. The rest of the night I sit in bed.....waiting... scared to death.
Finally morning comes. I am laying in a pool of sweat in my bed. Waiting for enough light to enter my room so I can get up and face what could be still crouched beside my bed.
Turns out it was nothing... but this one of my most scariest nightmares because it seemed so real.
Told some religious people about it, and the said it could have possibly been a spirit of some sort. But I dont believe in that stuff.

Diog, I had something like that happen to me, accept I was perfectly awake. It was probably about 10pm. I had just walked into my room from doing my nightly business. As I'm walking over to my computer chair, I stop for just an instant, because it felt like something was infront of me. And then I felt a kiss on my cheek. Fucking craziest thing I've ever had happen to me. I stubled back and fell over heart beating a million miles a minute.
Seriously the craziest thing ever.

If a spirit really is giong to come "visit" me. I wish they could do it in a less-scary way. Im not the kind of person that like to have the crap scared out of them at night. Why couldnt they come visit me while im playing EQ mid-day on saturdays. Not much could scare me then
And have a different approach, not with all the wind and stuff... lol

Yeah, that happened to me about two times as well. I kept feeling as if there was someone in the room and If I moved they'd either notice me or kill me or something, even though I tried hard to move I couldn't. Freaky as hell.Anyone ever have sleep paralysis? It as happened twice to me in my lifetime, and both times it scared me pretty bad. It's a condition where you have semi-conciousness and your eyes are open, but you cannot move. Both times it happened to me it lasted about 30 minutes. Scary stuff.
I remember doing a paper on astral travel and out of body experiences. I searched around the internet a bit and remember many people stating that before they "left the body" they would be semi-concious in the sense that they could see the room and things around them, however they couldn't move at all. They also mentioned that they felt a buzzing sensation /shrug. I don't know enough about how the brain works to say this as a fact but I know the brain works on different levels of alpha and beta waves. It could very well be possible that the brain is working on the same level at this point when your asleep and suddenly awaken.Anyone ever have sleep paralysis? In reference to out of body experiences...
One time when I was like 5 years old me, claritin, and 2 girls were rolling down this hill like a bunch of retarded kids..anyway I figured there was this pile of hay an the hill so I decided to move over and roll in it.
I got stung by a LOT of mud hornets, some how they managed to get me mainly in my wrists and neck. Anyway I went limp, they carried me to my house, I was turning very bluish-grey so I was taken to the emergency room, where they said if I would have gotten there 5 minutes later I would have died.
But during the trip to the hospital I had been laid on the back seat alone, my mom was driving, noone else in the car (my mom left my brother with her friend who was over at the time). During that time I was wide awake, I could hear my mom, I was definately aware I was in the car, however for a while I was no longer in my body, I was looking down at myself and I was really sad...I thought I was dead, I mean I was only 5, if you look down at yourself from above and you see your body is all grey with blue lips..it's pretty distressing.
Anyway I don't know if it was an out of body experience or if I was hallucinatting from all the toxins in my system, but I figured I'd just share that with you since you mentioned you did a paper on that type of shit.

I've had my share of nightmares but it's the lucid dreams that fascinate me. Knowing you're in a dream and being able to control the dream is amazing. Think of it as the ultimate virtual reality experience.
Even with some nightmares, I'm semi lucid and can wake myself up.
I had a recurring nightmare as a kid. (age 5-6) I would be chased by Indians through my home. Everytime I got to the living room I would hide behind a chair but then chickened out and feigned death on the floor (maybe that's why I don't play a monk!) I had this nightmare very often and finally one time I stopped in the living room and turned around to face the Indians chasing me. They never showed up and I never had the dream again. Face your fears?
If you concentrate on something before you go to sleep, there's a good chance you'll dream about it. There are also some techniques for helping to have lucid dreams. I wish I had written down some of my dreams when I woke up.
Lately I play EQ until I pass out and don't remember many dreams...probably because I never get to the REM state in my 3 hours of sleep : )

My most frequent nightmares are that I am repeatedly stabbing the hell out of an attacker - either someone trying to attack me or my friends/family (Very similar to the Mel Gibson scene in The Patriot where he loses control - though I've had the dream for years before that movie ever came out).
I have semi-lucid dreams as well. I dreampt the Grim Reaper came to visit me and was trying to take me away and I kept telling him this was a dream and he wasn't real. Then I woke up and looked outside... and he was floating away down the street. (I was still asleep). That same variation of dream will happen where I dream something awful happens, an accident, etc. and I tell myself its a dream and I think I wake up to look outside.. and there is still blood on the street, etc. I hate those dreams. More often than not my lucidity in dreams involves changing my outfit to something better
I've found that more often than not I have nightmares when I have to use the bathroom in my sleep and aren't waking up. Anxiety nightmares because my body is forcing me to wake up.

My biggest nightmare has been a repetative nightmare since I was a kid. It's basically falling from a very tall building to my death. Funny thing is that I'll wake up just as I hit rock bottom and will feel it in the pit of my stomach. Funny thing is that I'm not afraid of heights, well maybe a little, but everyone is a little bit (unless you rock climb or something like that and then you are quite fearless). I think the dream probably has something to do with control over ones life, whenever I have this dream it is when I'm at a point in my life where I need to make a change and I feel powerless to change it.

OMFG I had no idea other people had this happen. I used to get this on almost a daily basis and my biggest fear was having it happen while my face was in the pillow and suffocating. Sounds stupid, I know, but I was 12 years old and had nfc what was happening to me, other than the fact that I was unable to move or speak.Krimson Klaw wrote:Anyone ever have sleep paralysis? My most outstanding nightmare in terms of sheer horror is one where I am in a completely white area, no discernable walls, floors or celings.
A void landscape excepting this huge tooth like boulder, dark gray and damp.
I am chained to this rock, bound so tight it feel like it cuts into me. It keeps my suspended about ten feet off the ground.
Across directly from me is this figure, clad in a roman grecko loin cloth.
Black hair, about 8 and a half feet tall, red eyes about a 25-30' wing span (A shimmering black color of his feathers there) arching out of his back. He is built like a pro-wrestler but pale skin and with an errie poise of agility about him. If I focus on his wings I see stars, like some demented representation of eternity. In his hand he has this, what looks to be a spike of the crystal substance. It is not shaped definitively or polished of cut, but looks like a rough long sharp crystal.
And I see a long line off to my right of people that I have known and will know and care about, stretching beyond sight.
These people I care about step up to this individual, and he murders them, one by one.
This is where I start to freak because he is by all appeareances insainly strong, as exampled by some of the things he does, like ripping people in half.
All this time I am screaming and shaking wildly, struggling, going fucking crazy trying to get free. I am also yelling for these people to run but the just stand their with blank expressions on their faces.
Imagine that, everyone you love and will EVER love being paraded before you an executed in a horrid fashion...
I woke up from this dream and jumped off my bed, into and in someparts through the wall. Then I blacked out again...
I NEVER want this dream again.
