I hate allergies...what's your fav medication?

I decided to give claritin a try today...the pill...not my brother the bard.
Anyway it seems to have had ZERO effect on me, my nose is running like a champ.

I used Drixoral the other day...it did virtually nothing as well.

Sudafed I think I had one of those like chilling in a moving box, it was just in the bubble pack, it worked good....but I'm not sure what type it was.

I guess I'll go to the store tomarrow and buy some of that if I can figure out what type it was exactly...I haven't been to the gym in a week because I would have snot running down my chest if I tried to do my typical work out which is 30-60mins of cardio...500-700 sit-ups and then some weights....it's not like people want you blowing snot non-stop and then touching the weights...I need to get this stopped so I can go to the gym before I leave for Florida with a flabby stomach after all my work this month to get in shape.

Alka-seltzer Cold and Allegery (I think is what it's called) has always worked marvels for me during hay-fever season.

Allergy medication is all a crock of shit. My allergies are resistant to just about everything. But a drug cocktail consisting of one Sudafed, one Allegra, and one Claritin-D usually keeps my symptoms under control. Any of those pills by itself will have virtually no effect.

Try the Tylenol brand of allergy meds, they're really really strong and work for me, when other stuff usually doesnt.

Your body quickly builds immunities to the drugs. Claritin doesnt do dick unless you take a few at a time. Allegra is ok, but I've found that most people that have the same allergy problems build a tolerance to that real fast. I've been through almost every decongestant you can find, the only ones that have worked for me are Entex and Astelin as a combo. Usually within an hour of taking these, I'm breathing normal again with no drainage.

Yeah, it's all about taking the combos. Individual drugs are rarely effective long-term solutions for stubborn allergies. You have to keep popping different types.

I use Tavist-D accompanied by Sudafed decongestant if really bad.

I took Dimatapp for years w/o it ever not working until they took it off the market. The "new" Dimatapp is just sudafed. I have tried ALL the drugs listed below and had settled on the allergy cocktail of Claritin and Sudafed until I got real sick once and my Dr. gave me the Reformulated Rynatan, generic R-Tanna. Man, for all of you out there still taking multiple medication please give it a try. The generic is cheap but you will have to get a perscription. It like all these drugs seem to work better for some and worse for others but for me this one has REALLY done the trick. I've been taking it now for a little over two years and it's still the only thing I need unless I get a really bad cold then I throw some sudafed in as well. Haven't had to do that since Nov. though. Hope this helps!

I used to have an allegra perscription. It worked well for me. It was the type of drug that didn't work right away, you had to take it for a few days before getting results.

Otherwise for fast relief Benadryl works pretty well, however it totally puts me to sleep. Good for when trying to fall asleep with a runny nose.

I never had any luck with any of the allergy medicines until someone told me to try something new. Nasalcrom doesn't help "cure" any of the symptoms but instead prevents the reaction from happening which causes the symptoms. I used it for a couple of years until I got pregnant.

I don't know if the benefits of nasalcrom would outweigh its side-effects.

I can live with dry mouth, heart palpitations or dizziness, but pregnancy...

I've taken every allergy medication in existance I think.

I currently have prescriptions for 2 kinds of Allegra, Zyrtec, and Clarinex. Along with a couple of nasal inhalers, etc. I also get 3 different allergy injections every 2 or so weeks for supposed immunotherapy (yeah I'm a huge skeptic but allergies so bad I gave it a shot).

Over the counter allergy medicines are ok for short term immediate relief - but despite labels saying non-drowsy, etc. they tend to make me feel a bit sleepy and aren't something I like to use daily.

You can also buy an air purifyer and keep it in your bedroom so at least where you sleep there are a few less allergens in the air. Little things like air filters, brand of vaccum, etc. can also help.

It was also recommended that I "nasal irrigate" which sounds absolutely disgusting, but if you have bad allergies its worth trying.

You take something that looks like this

And then mix half a cup of warm water, half a teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda.. and SQUIRT it up your nose into your sinus cavities. It will run out your other nostril. Pretty much rinses the allergens out of your sinus cavities without using the harsh chemicals in most nasal sprays that can cause irritation and bloody noses. Can do it 2-4 times a day. Just keep your head bent down after you're done for about 30 seconds while the saline solution drips out

Pain in the ass yes.. but allergy medicine gets expensive. And prescription allergy medicines you need to take daily to build up the benefits supposedly. Nothing really works all that well for me. But I guess it's better than where I was before I took anything.

The shots help a little - but often make me feel like complete shit on shot day and can leave ugly welts and bruising on my arm. Only had an adverse reaction once - and they gave me a nice shot of adrenalin to counteract the systemic reaction - that was exciting for sure.

Hehe - just didn't want to take any chances with the baby and medications ... Ray Charles concert was more a factor in that pregnancy ...

wow... I had no idea that there were this many problems related to alergy medications...

I have very genuine sympathy for you alergy sufferers out there... The only time I have any similar symptoms is when I have a cold, which is about once a year for 3-4 days... shit, I can't imagine what it must be like to have to deal with that on a year-'round basis...

My only real alergy is to sunflower seeds ( I have to eat a 10 oz. jar to experience symptoms) and no other alergies to any other nuts... itchy eyes and a itchy throat and then my tongue swells and my throat starts to close up and choke me... but no other alergies that I am aware of...

Sudafed is great for stuffy/runny noses, but does nothing for other symptoms if you have em.

It's all about the Proximity to Ireland law: The closer to Ireland your ancestors lived, the worse your allergies will be. Also, the worse you'll be able to manage a suntan.

You can't tell in that picture so much...but that's red hair, blue eyes, freckles....and yes I have to go to a tanning bed 3x a week to get that dark, I'm very fair skinned.

And so you can tell I'm likely irish...my grandmothers maiden name is Moriarity,and yes from Ireland, I think her mom was fresh off the boat....and I have allergies. I have some French, Maltese, and English mixed in also...don't hate me because I'm part french.

I never heard the Ireland proximity rule before.

Flonase by prescription. Claritin just during peak allergy seasons.
