"Operation: Iraqi Freedom" is the name that is being used at the moment.

Something about that name bugs me.

Yeah, that was added to the Miriam Webster dictionary to divert embarrasment from Bush.

Would it be considered correct to pronounce nucleus : Nook-Yoo-Lus?

The pronunciation (nook-yoo-ler), which is generally considered incorrect, is an example of how a familiar phonological pattern can influence an unfamiliar one.

Particular, circular, spectacular, molecular, ocular, and vascular.
Nuclear/Nucleus are pretty much the only 2 words in the english language with that letter combination.

People have accents. Try being more understanding of different people's cultures. The man is a mental midget when it comes to public speaking, but you can't fault him for a cultural pronunciation.

jimmy carter got made fun of for pronouncing Nuclear as "nucular" as well.

now it is Dubya's turn. Jimmy had the excuse that he was from a poor family in rural Georgia.

but there is no way around the fact that there is no vowel between the c and the l, therefore you simply cant rationalize the pronunciation as correct.

Give me a break, it's not an accent.
George W Bush has no discernable accent.
He speaks proper American.

It's a mispronunciation based on ignorance.

I haven't heard anyone else (texan or otherwise) consistently mispronounce that particular word.

Southern is most definitely a culture. I know a lot of people, myself included, that pronounce it the way Dubya does. My HS physics teacher (who was from Mississippi) pronounced it that way, and that's where I got it from.

You sound like those pissy Brits who get mad because we call it "a-lu-mi-num" instead of (the technically correct) "a-lu-mi-ni-um"

Because 'Favre' is a French name and Americans have problems pronouncing a lot French words....

Having grown up in Texas, I'd have to disagree. There's a lot of cultural things in Texas that originated there. Ever been? It's a neat place, especially the Austin area.

I've known several "new-kew-lars". It seems a pretty common problem. I guess it's something that sticks if it catches you at an early age.
That was nowhere near as annoying as the guy I used to work with who would pronounce "syndrome" as "syndrone" ><

There should be a special re-education centre for these types. They can learn alongside the other two great sinners of the English speaking world: Apostrophe Abusers and Those Who Pronounce The Letter 'H' as 'Haytch'!!!!1111

The North American spelling is aluminum.
The British spelling is aluminium.

Each pronuncuation is correct for the spelling.

There are many spelling descrepancies between American English and English in the rest of the world. Even between Canada and the states there are several common differences.
Color - Colour
Gray - Grey

Pronouncing nuclear, nook-yoo-ler is simply wrong.
There is no combination of letters in the word that could provide a 'yoo' or even a 'yuh' sound.

Syllable by syllable:

Nuc - nook or nuk
Le - lee
ar - arr

Another common pronunciation is :

Nuc - nook or nuk
Lear - leer

Accent or no accent, it doesn't make the pronunciation correct. I don't care if they say "nucular" in Texas (I know quite a few people from Texas who do not, but let's not get into that). The word is not "nucular," and you can't hide behind an accent to get away with that.

The fact of the matter is that "nucular" is the way our brains first approximate the word when we learn it as kids. We're corrected, and we learn better. But somewhere down the line, Bush never learned better. It has nothing to do with an accent, and everything to do with ignorance. His ignorance of the word should not be excused simply because many people in his home state are ignorant of it.

Pronouncing Brett Favre's name as "Farve" is incorrect, as well. It's a French surname that we Americans pronounce in a way we can more easily wrap our tongues around. Ultimately, it doesn't make our pronunciation correct. The word is still "Favre."

If we wanted to more closely approximate the way his last name is supposed to be said, we should say "fahv," and not "farv."

They do in cases where an entire country adopts a certain pronunciation, and its own dictionary. In the case of the South, I would hesitate to call the place its own nation, or its own ethnicity. I would also hesitate to publish an official Southern Dictionary and try to pass off their pronunciations as correct. They're simply not.

Likening America : Britain :: South : North is *not* a valid analogy.

Yes, yes, keep on turning this into a "liberal" vs. "conservative" debate. Political affiliation has jack and shit to do with correcting pronunciation mistakes, but keep thinking it does if that helps you sleep better at night.

The bottom line: we corrected his pronunciation; you got pissed off because of it. You then retreated into your Southern "identity," while we relied on logic and reason.

Excuse me. I must get into my Hummer, spend a few hours at the Armani store, drink some Hollywood fad drink, drive off to my pilates class, and then attend an anti-American Communist rally. That's so obviously what all of us "big city liberals" do, you know.
