5 years ago, I was really fuckered for cash, times were real fucking bad. I was basically forced to sell off all of my guitar equipment--2 guitars, amp, 4-track, effects gizmos, etc. to be able to get by.

For some reason, today, I decide what to do with my tax refund. Although I could not afford any high-end shit, I bought myself a decent Ibanez electric and a little Marshall Studio amp.

Although my fingers are burning and sore from the lack of playing over the years, they still seem to remember, more or less, where to go on the fretboard. It is strange! All this time and the memories are just popping back!

I can't believe, after spending 10 or so years playing every day to going 5 years without that I could have not missed what I loved so much to do.

Anyways, story aside:

Do you play an instrument? And if so, what do you play?

I own a Taylor 510 that I got at a music store a few years ago. upgraded from my shitty pawn shop one I bought when I was like 13. It's a good guitar but a little big for me (I am very small). It's kinda neat becoz it has my name on it. :)

Actually on my 17 inch monitor at 1280x1024... i think the image is about life size... maybe a little smaller. It looks just as beutiful as the day I bought it too just like the pic. Got an autolink metal mouthpiece for a nice ritch jazzy sound (load as shit though).

Like Cane I sold off a lot of gear a few years back, mostly paraphenelia but I did do a STUPID STUPID STUPID thing and sell my old moog-clone, my two Junos and my BX-3.

These are my main instruments/tools, but more and more I am sticking to the piano.

I also have two guitars that I like a lot, a Yairi

and a Fender 12-string - and someday when I am rich like a king, I will be able to restore my Dad's old Martin D-42, but so far I am looking at at least $1800 to bring it back to former glory so that will probably be a while.

Fender P-Bass Lyte Pearl with gold keys. Had this bass for about 15 years now, its a trooper and always loved the sound it got.

King 2b tenor trombone silver bell circa 1939(My pops was a pro trombonist player in the 60s and 70s he passed me down one of a pair he had, he has the other) nice lead horn.

Bach Stradivarius 42B - Key of Bb/F, F traditional rotor mechanism, traditional wrap for my Wind Ensemble, Orchestra Days as a young lad. Nice horn even for jazz, able to double decently on Bass Trombone parts which is my fav part to play.

and to the dude who said Chuck Mangione on a rainy day.. feels so good! the guitar on that track still sends chills up my spine heh. and all about the uplifting cymbal on the upbeat hehe

and yes it is true about band camp!

and yea playing an instrument, well you dont really forget how to play, just takes a couple weeks to get your chops back up after a long break

I play imaginary drums too since i don`t have a real set!

You should try it just not on your knees it can hurt after a while.

Have a Gibson "The Paul" dunno who remembers these...Solid Walnut body over all shape is that of a Les Paul but it was beveled like an SG...Dual DiMarzio SDS-1's (They were the shiznit in '77 when I put them in)...Lil Peavey BW Tube Amp for when I wanna wake the neighbors...

Never use the electric anymore but damned if I can bring myself to sell it...

Gibson Les Paul Stratton with the Sunburst finish was the guitar to own back in 1973 when my old man still had his band. He hasnt played profesionally for years, but once in a blue moon when he thinks no one else is home he busts it out. Those guitars are some of the best ever made for truely techincal playing.

Gave it all up 10 years ago and the memory of selling it still gives me a wrench.

I'm a flautist for many years, also a pianist and vocalist as well. One of these days, I will be the first Asian woman director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Let this be known.

I basically can play all the instruments of a symphonic band, but my favorites (besides my main ones) are oboe and trumpet. I also play some guitar, and started learning about 3 years ago. we own an Ibanez AE20, a yamaha, a Gibson, and a Fender. got a room full of Line 6 amp equipment and lots of wires all over

I don't know shit about the guitar models, cept they sound freaking cool.

Downstairs, I have an upright Kawai with black satin finish.. it's my baby. We don't have room for a baby grand, otherwise, I would get one in a heartbeat. my flute, for those that care, is a Gemeinhardt KGM Special edition, was special ordered with custom keys and a 9kgold embouchure plate, french keys. I also have a plateu model similar, but without the gold embouchure plate. My piccolo is an old crappy gemeinhardt, but it works well and still plays, so I don't have the heart to replace it yet. Have owned a busload of other instruments, but I also had to give up some of them a few years ago due to some financial problems I was going through

I miss my instruments!!

Been playing piano for nine years, got a large recital coming up in April.
I play a Steinway baby grand at my lesson, and we have a Baldwin upright at my house. The great thing about working where I do (Brookstone Estates, a retirement home) is that we have a grand piano in the dining room, so I always get to play for the residents. I also play the clarinet for six years and have been a percussionist for two years.

I've been playing for quite a few years now, and I've managed to collect a few peices here and there...

Accoustic:
2 Ovation Celebrity Deluxe 6 strings (ambur and chery burst). The ambur one has a much brighter and fuller sound, while the chery seems to be much more deep and mellow.

A 30 year old hand made "Garcia" classical nylon string. This is just the best sounding guitar I've ever heard ... my mom picked it up at a flee market about 25 years ago for 200 bucks. I've had it appraised at over $10,000, heh. The neck is about 3 inches across at the nut and the strings are a mile off the fretboard ... It was a bitch to learn to play on (was all I had for about 3 years).

My next guitar will probably be an older Martin 12 string, if I can find one.

Electric:
Westone Ibanez looking peice of shit ... this was my first guitar (after stealing the garcia from my mother). Bright red finish, rosewood fretboard etc... Plays bad, sounds worse.

Levinson Blade custom. Hand made by Garry Levinson in Switzerland. This was one of his first peices, before Fender made him change the headstock design. It's a gorgeous transparent blue finish, with custom black lace pickups, active electronics with a pre-amp, sperzel locking tuners, gold hardware. This thing plays and sounds better than any strat I've ever seen. I use really heavy gauge strings on this (13s), and keep it tuned half a step down.

1989 Fender Statocaster Plus. Black/white, maple neck, gold lace sensors, schaller locking tuners with an lsr roller nut. Typical strat, great action, awesome blues guitar. I prefer the Levinson though.

Paul Reed Smith custom 24 - http://www3.sympatico.ca/faerin/Guitars/PRSandBlade.jpg. This is my newest toy (have wanted one of these for years) Turquoise finish, 10+ flame top, bird inlays, new style locking tuners, trem bridge. Custom ordered from PRS, took about 8 months to finally get to me. D'dario 9's with standard tuning for this one. I'm insanely happy with this guitar ... it's what I pickup to play 99% of the time now.

Been looking around for a nice less paul custom or ES-335, but most of the new stuff gibson produces seems to be pretty lacking in quality :\ If I can find a nice 60s-80s LP for a decent price, I'll snatch it up pretty quickly.

Amplifiers:
1978 Traynor Mk3. Bought this in a small town music store for next to nothing. I was told it was used by The Guess Who for a few years (entirely possible, they used many of these amps), but who knows. 200 watt, all tube, 2x 10" jensons, awesome reverb, great classic "glassy" sound, Weighs more than my car.

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. 40 watts, all tube, 1x12" jenson. Almost as loud as the traynor at only 40 watts ... I haven't gotten this thing above 2 yet. Classic fender sound in a very portable amp. This is what I use 99% of the time now, with a couple modded Ibanez TS9 tube screamers for overdrive.

I also have a cheaper Yamaha keyboard that I've been teaching myself to play piano on. I'll probably upgrade this to something decent shortly.

Being in the moving industry, I can tell you that the 3 bigges things that people waste their money on are hot tubs, pool tables, and pianos. Virtually no one ever wants them when they move out.

Also, most rich customers use their grand/baby grand pianos as a mere decoration or piece of furniture.

That always bugs me for some reason. I imagine there are people out there that would love to play on one of those everyday, yet it sits collecting dust in Richie Rich's little castle as a showpiece to no one imparticular.

My next guitar is going to be a Taylor hands down. They are just awesome. My acoustic is just a lame low end Ovation, and it sucks. It really soured me on the acoustic/electric option.

My electric is about 13 years old now, but i've thrown in Fender Strat Texas Specials in the neck and mid, and a Seymour Duncan humbucker at the bridge. Texas Specials are noisy as fuck, so i wouldnt recommend them, but they give me the sound i was looking for at a low price (my amp sucks dick). It is an Ibanez 540R, (precursor to their Joe Satriani series), and i do like the neck a lot. It is pretty beefy for an Ibanez, and other than the stock electronics (which suck) i still love the guitar.

Long term, i may buy a vintage Les Paul or something, but mostly i just need a new amp. Was thinking one of the Fender DeVille models.

edit: wtf am i saying, i will sell my first kid on ebay and buy a PRS

Voro, you should take a look at the K. Yairi and the Alvarez/Yairi guitars; they're about the same pricebracket as Ovations and they blow them out of the water as far as playability, finish, sustain and durability goes - at least in my experience.

My first instrument was the oboe, and I also played English horn in HS symphony. I learded to play baritone/euphonium for marching band, which I did through college.

I own a Selmer condensed oboe (cheap, but keeps the lips in shape), and a pretty nice 4-valve Yamaha euphonium.

I cannot play guitar for shit, just some old speed metal that doesn't require the ability to hold a full chord. My friends used to tease me that my hands were meant for holding an axe not an axe

Kramer "Axe" Bass... bought it when I was in highschool for $250. Gene Simmons collector's edition, has his grease pencil signature on it, 96/1000. Had a Fender and an Ibanez along the way, but haven't played much since college... this is the only one I can't bear to sell.

I always had similar thoughts when I saw a musician smashing his guitar.

Voro, don't forget to audition the Seagulls, too! The Artist series is pretty nice. I'll probably upgrade to one of those in a few years.

My parents have a piano that no one plays. This last Christmas, when my mom asked me what I wanted, I told her all I wanted was the piano so I could take it up again. She said she "would have to think about it." (Note that I was the only one in the family who had taken lessons.) I know she just didn't want to give it up because she would have to "do something with that wall." I told her to just forget it.

A friend of mine has a seagull, and it is better than my ovation for sure. but i think i'm sold on Taylor for now. But i love to "shop" for guitars so i will make a point to make sure i make a wise decision

taylors are definitely a rung ahead of seagulls on the quality scale. although they cost a good deal more for even the lowest end.

I don't see myself ever upgrading my guitar unless I break it or lose it or a rep from sony music appears out of thin air and offers me a record contract for playing rock cover songs and irish folk music.

Martin, Taylor and Yairi are all potentially exquisite machines...I tend to lean towards Martin, they have introduced a competitive lower end line at around $1000...I have played a couple DMs that were very close to my D-28 in sound quality.

I have played many many Taylors and them as excellent but I hate the look of cutaways on acoustics (personal quirkiness)

Mr Yairi makes some amazing guitars as well...My cousin has a DY-58 (I think thats the model) with Bookmatched 2 piece Black Jacaranda Back amazingly beautiful...

Sadly its Yairi's choice of woods that puts me off...a lot of his woods are clearly SA rainforest...:/...

I play guitar, not as much as I should or would like too...

I currently have 2 Kramer America Pacers I got on EBay a couple of years ago, each with Duncan pickups, Floyd Rose etc... a Guild DV52 and a Gibson Les Paul Standard (Heratage Cherry Sunburst) I bought back in '90 just before they got real popular again. I usually play it 90% of the time. Would give my left nutt to have a PRS Santana model though...

Amps aren't great, a little Peavy practice amp and a Peavy Classic 50 for gigs but I haven't played live in almost 4 years. I have sold all my effects and stuff over the years except for an old Dunlop Wah and Morley Volume pedal, otherwise I run straight into the Classic50... I would like a Chorus pedal though, kind'a miss that.

New Axe look nice man, Big Gratz Canelek, good to hear a fellow player is back in action
