Requiem for a Dream
Sweet mother of crap!
I saw this movie last night, and had a hard time inputting what I was seeing.
A great film, but it WILL disturb you and do not watch it alone.
Other than that, it is too shocking to be described with mere words.
See it, a perfect 10 on the "OMFG" scale.

Bujinkan is teh win!
I watched it last night and I've been thinking about it ever since. Truly impressive what lengths people will go to satisfy their addictions. Too bad they didn't have a computer gamer in the movie!

It took me about an hour to absorb the movie... the ending is incredibly intense. There has never been a movie that made me feel so physically unwell.
I've seen it 4 times and it still hasn't lost it's edge.
I can listen to the soundtrack and get the chills.
If you haven't seen Aronofskys first move, Pi, you should check it out.
The camera work and visual/production style is very similar to Requiem but it's much more crude. You can really see his growth as a director between the 2 films.

Wrong.Anuin wrote:The song itself was no composed specifically for either movie. Infact, that song is also in One Hour Photo.A friend lended me her tape she bought and i saw it recently with another girl, i didnt know LoTR TT took the song from there for their previews.

Like miir said you are wrong.. I don't know how you can think that this song was'nt composed for that film..Anuin wrote:The song itself was no composed specifically for either movie. The film is divided in seasons and each season has a different adaptation of that song in various forms/arrangements.

I find it well thought out tho, but highly misleading hehe.
Props to them tho for creating a website like that that kinda gives you a sort of feel for the movie.

Whenever I think back to the movie, I always think to how their lives detiorated because of the use of drugs... Jennifer Connely went from a happy relationship to a crack whore doing ass to ass for old men. The one guy, I forget his name, the white guy, went from his relationship to go through the emotion of losing his arm, going to jail, losing his girlfriend and mother. Waynes went from a good friend to a big time drug dealer, almost being shot, and then arrested. The mother went from a house full of people her own age many friends among them, a loving son, to a psychotic maniac... Its definately not one of those feel good movies... I personally loved it. I saw it alone and around 1am on IFC...

Ok, damn. Just saw this finally, and holy mother fucking hell. I realized in the last few minutes that I'd gone from an uncomfortable feeling at the start of a movie (I almost turned it off, I was getting too depressed) to sitting on the edge of my seat with this mixture of shock and revulsion on my face. I didn't have to see my reflection, I could feel it. Damn...
Oh ya, definitely Clint Mansell's doing on the soundtrack, I picked it out in a second. Hell, he was the reason I saw Pi in the first place.

Quite right. Although it's Kronos Quartet!miir wrote:Wrong.Anuin wrote:The song itself was no composed specifically for either movie. If you look at the cover it says "Original music..."
As far as One Hour Photo goes, it came out two years later.
As for the movie itself.. I had a hard time feeling bad for anyone other than the mother so the movie overall didn't have a huge impact on me.Sountrack recycling
Is this a new trend to recycle motion picture soundtracks? When the opening scene theme of Schindler's List reminded me of Por Una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel featured in the Tango scene in True Lies, I didn't pay too much attention to it. Enter the Kronos Quartet case. In the most excellent - but widely unknown - movie A Requiem for a Dream, the most excellent Kronos Quartet score is the foundation of the whole story, and it is addictive, which is what this movie is about. Without this very score, the movie wouldn't work. One Hour Photo with Robin Williams is quite OK to watch - until the police and resolving scene, when a key theme from Requiem for a Dream is re-used. This messes up everything. You instantly see the scorewriter as an uninspired sucker who thinks that his audience isn't watching off-mainstream movies anyway. Bad move.

About which?
Requiem was uncomfortable, like a bad Nyquil experience. The direction was a Jagermeister-induced race to the toilet to vomit.
Crash was watered-down Hollywood jibberish--a merry-go-round of stereotypes all neatly packaged at the end so the watcher can have that warm and fuzzy feeling they get when giving change to the homeless.

I haven't seen Crash so I can't comment on it. As for Requiem, it was supposed to make you feel disoriented and uncomfortable. I said so myself in my post above with my initial reaction after watching it. It does so very well in my opinion, and I appreciate it for that fact. The combination of camera work, lighting, mixed with the awesome soundtrack did a hell of a job. Plus, it has Jennifer Connely, so that's like, +500 hawesome points right there.
I can understand not enjoying the film because of the way the imagery could affect emotions, sure. But it sounds like that's not quite what you're saying.

Warm and fuzzy may have not been the best choice of words to describe the cop saving the lady in the wreck.
As for Requiem, the camerawork made me feel queezy. Yeah, it was done on purpose, but I found it more gimmicky than thought-provoking and distracted from what could have possibly been a nice companion to Drugstore Cowboy or the somewhat decent 'Rush' or 'Permanent Midnight'.
And yes, it is just an opinion--no need to get all riled up!
I can be more Filthy Critic than Ebert & Roper and I can't write a review worth a damn.
Back to my opinion on Crash--hey, I like my share of brainless Hollywood flicks, but don't expect me to eat a shit sandwich wrapped up in shiny quasi-thought-provoking packaging. The Academy buys that shit buy the truckload anyways. And FFS, Sandra Bulloch should be a surefire way to tell that something is going to get phoned in.
