Post by Lindain »

Methinks I be bugged with some spyware.. Every couple of hours some pop up comes up even if I'm not surfing the web and its always some random shite..pr0n, insurance, gambling. Crap like that.

Anyways, looking for some downloadable programs to get rid of this crap and yet more programs to make sure it and it's friends don't get on my HD again. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Had a couple threads on these sorts of popups. Its prolly The Windows messaging service being exploited. Do This:

1. Click on the Start button and open the control panel.
2. Go to Administrative Tools.
3. Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.
4. Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.
5. Change the startup type to Disable and click Apply at the bottom.
6. Click OK to exit window.

That will stop most of them...Then hit Lavasoft.com for Ad-Aware...

Actually I just flip it to manual rather than disable. That way its still off by default but if for some reason you ever need it you can turn it on without having to reboot. Just a minor quibble.

Ad-Aware 6 from Lavasoft. It's free and pretty good.

Upgrade even if you use 5. I was using 5 and had some problems even though it reported my system as clean. Upgraded to 6 and found 38 more pieces of software evil that needed killing ><
