networking help please

I just got a new computer the other day, and bought stuff to network it to my old one. I got a 10/100 switch, cat5efast cable, and hooked it all up. I went through the network wizard and set up both of them, the new computer I got works fine, but on my old one, when I try to install a new protocol ( like tcp/Ip ) it says that the file is missing, and to install the windows ME disk. Well, its a HP and I don't have the ME disk, and I try to use the restore disks and the files are'nt on any of them.

Before anyone says something about how windows ME is the embodiment of all that is , has been , and will be gay, I know this. But I need to network the computers to transfer the stuff off my computer before I format my computer and install XP( I need to format and not just upgrade cause my .dll's and shit are getting corrupt).

But , to get to the point, when I try to view the entire network on the computer, it says I cant access it.. so im stuck between a rock and a hard space..

Your old computer should already have TCP/IP bound to the NIC, did you remove it or something? I would suggest not using the networking wizard. Just give one computer an ip like 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2, make both subnet masks 255.255.255.0 and make sure they are in the same workgroup, enable file sharing on both ends and reboot. (assuming TCP/IP is still there.) If the computers don't see eachother in network neighborhood try pinging or a computer search. Usually works for me.

If you've got a preinstalled os like most HP/Compaq/Dells they have directory with the cab files in them, point it there when it asks for the ME disks... go to start. run, find files and folders and then do a search for *.cab - you should see OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of files in the same directory - that's the path...

eah what Vyr said , but the easy way to do it is , when it asks for the ME disk , just type in ,,,, C:/windows/options/cabs ,, or just try these two C:/windows ,,, C;/windows/system

If all else fails and all you want to do is transfer data just take the old HD out and add it to the new compputer.

Well, if you have no NIC, and no modem, then you don't need a Protocol stack, I'm sure you meant that though (just giving ya shit). Seriously though, Even if the Protocol is there, I have seen it many times where Drivers are missing, corrupt, or when the person installing it got to that point originally, they canceled at where it asks for the CD. It puts the Protocol in the list, but it is fucked. You need the ME CD or the Cabs. As stated about, they are, by default, in the c:\windows\options\cabs folder. Never ever point it to Windows, Windows\system, Windows\System32 folders. It's asking you for the CD for a reason. I have seen too many times where the drivers on the disk are hosed. Fresh drivers are usually better than those installed

As for installing XP over Upgrading. Have you ever tried upgrading anything from Microsoft? hehehe. I always install it fresh, never upgrade. Just too many bad memories of Microsoft "upgrades" turning into me and my good friend fdisk deleting partitions

Well, if you've been playing EQ on this machine (i.e. connecting to the internet), then IP has to be there.

Just assign addresses as above and flip the switch on file sharing.

If file sharing wont go, or you can ping the other machine but not see it in Network Neighborhood, post back here for some good ol fashioned DOS networking commands to get things moved. It's a pain, but it works.

Ok, now for the curveball. After reading what you all had to say, I went to try and install tcp/ip in the network. This time, for some reason, I didn't get the prompt about not being able to find the file and such and it just went ahead and restarted. When it booted back up, though- .dll files started causing errors left and right, one after another. So I went ahead and did a system restore to earlier today for like the 450 millionth time.

So I guess my question is, what now? I really really really don't want to format before I get this stuff off of my computer, so should I just start putting it on to disks? Or does anyone have any other ideas as far as troubleshooting? Thanks ahead of time for any further help. Im off to work now, because as if I wasn't in a shitty enough mood, the transmission went out on my car today and I need to go to the bank tomorrow to buy a new car.

if it was me, i would totally wipe that windows install and start over.

that is waht i would do, because your current install is obviously seriously messed up.

Burn all the shit you want to save; favorites, email addys, email account info, pictures and movies (porn of course), and whatever else you think even MIGHT be useful later. Gather all your driver disks if you still have them. Make sure you know for a fact that you will be able to get back online after you nuke your drive before you do it. Nothing sucks more than not being able to log on because you did this on a weekend and you can't speak Hindu to the tech person you will most likely reach. Nuke it all and start fresh. It's like giving your computer an enema.

My brother in law works for a division of NBC and their tech support is offshore, so he always ends up calling me with PC questions, at which times i try to attempt my best Apu impersination so as not to make the process too painless for him.

Ok, gonna put all my shit, including eq onto cd's so I don't need to download again.. My last question ( I think ) is, is there a way to change the format of a mp3 file to some other format so that I don't need to burn 20 cd's worth of songs with a 8x cd burner ? please say yes..

What you need to do is

a) make sure file sharing is enabled on both systems
b) make sure both systems have the same workgroup
c) make sure file sharing is properly bound to tcp/ip

However, I prefer to use IPX/SPX for my internal file sharing, as that way I do not have to allocate an IP to my second system, which is never used for external traffic.

I have found Windows networking to be inordinately quirky sometimes. When all else fails, kick it a few times and go for a drink, secure in the knowledge that your system is doing it on purpose solely to piss you off.
