Should 'bootylicious' be in the dictionary?

Apparently Merriam-Webster added 'bootylicious' to their dictionary last year. That's just not right!

Among the new words that made the cut for 2002 were treehugger (an environmentalist"), hottie ("a physically attractive person"), roadrage ("a motorist's uncontrolled anger that is usually generated by an irritating act of another motorist and is expressed by aggressive or violent behavior") and dollarization ("adoption of the U.S. dollar as a foreign country's official national currency").

"We added hottie, meaning somebody very attractive, and booty, meaning buttocks, and noogie, the prank of rubbing your knuckles on somebody's head," says James Lowe, a senior editor at Merriam-Webster.

Noogie just made it after all these years and bootylicious makes it after just one! I think they jumped the gun a little.

I have used the word bootylicious several times since it was first introduced to me. I use it in my arsenal of pick up lines. "Girl, youz bootylicious." It ranks up there with "Youz finer than a new set of snow tires" or "youz hotter than a barrel of fire", and of course an old favorite, "You got any Persian in you? Want some?"

For added effect I use my best Oklahoma countryboy accent.

News item: CNN Headline News, in an effort to improve its ratings and image among young viewers, is discussing using "cutting-edge" slang on its newscasts. In an internal memo cited by media organizations this week, a CNN producer suggested adding hip-hop phrases such as "flava," slang for "style," to make the news more accessible to a younger audience.

[Voice of James Earl Jones]: "This is CNN Headline News, the dopest news network."

Anchor Rudi Bakhtiar: "Yo, 'sup, y'all. This is Rudi Bakhtiar, in the hizzy in Atlanta, with tha latest 4-1-1 from CNN Headline News . . ."

[Cue up photo of President Bush]

Bakhtiar: "President Bush laid another smackdown on Iraq today, suggesting that Saddam Hussein must be trippin' if he thinks tha United States will back down from its campaign to stop the Iraqi dictator. Wolf Blitzer has more."

Blitzer: "Rudi, President Bush was representin' again today. He told congressional leaders he would deploy America's military might to bust a cap in Saddam if tha Iraqi leader continued to stand in tha way of U.N. weapons inspectors."

The term booty is 'african-american' slang that has been around for decades.

Makes sense that they would add 'booty' to the dictionary.

Yeah, let's try to regulate the English language. It works so well. Take another lesson from the French there who tried to regulate out the word "Hamburger". Yah.

Do me a favor while you're at it and make "their" a correct substitution for "he/she" or "his/her" while you're at it, like it used to be in Middle English.

I don't have a problem with slang being in the dictionary. I just think it should be established slang. 'Bootylicious' is too new to be anyting more than a fad word. If people still use it 15 years from now then sure.
