iPhone 6, 6+
Re: iPhone 6, 6+
Yeah, will most likely wait for the announcements surrounding CES (usually the week before).
If no major advances I'll get a reduced price 2016 model a company is looking to dump. At minimum I'll want 10bit color and the approved HDR standard. 120 refresh (actual not scam Samsung "motion" doubled numbers) and low response time for gaming.
Amazing how low the power consumption is on modern TVs. The high end 55" models show $13/year for power. Keeps dropping.

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
I got one of the fancy 2015 samsungs (not fake 120hz, but i have it disabled anyways). Its real nice, has quantum butthole dots or whatever, its NOT OLED level. Never will be, because its not OLED. So get that out of your mind.
It plays all the codecs I've thrown at it, so no issue there (just like my older samsung plasma)...MKV's are the big one, as that's a common compression format as you know, and its not supported by majority of TV's.
Bought my TV around thanksgiving, after the 2016's were announced, and the 2015's went on discount. So did the same as you plan to do.
Nothing, I repeat, nothing, can compare to OLED, except plasma, and no one makes those anymore. OLED is just like plasma, a whole 'nother level above LCD. LCD is such a joke, and should have been put to bed years ago. But its what we are stuck with, since LG is the only OLED supplier still. Others keep talking about, or ditching it and bringing it back (samsung), its just getting old. There's no price competition to bring that crap down.
Anyways, I bought when I did because I wanted a bigger TV. Nothing more to it. Wasn't worth "waiting" for OLED, as I figured by the time I'm done with this TV, maybe just maybe OLED will be the standard. Doubt it, as LCD just piles on the profits for these companies, as its just so cheap to manufacturer now.
My only regret is that samsung doesn't make a full array backlit TV anymore, or at a reasonable price, so you're stuck with just Vizio for that. So if the Vizio's had better decoding/etc, their TV's would be a whole lot nicer. I know they have a high end line now, but I've never seen one. I believe its priced completely unreasonably, which just makes you buy the OLED from LG at that point.
Phew, that's a lot. Sorry, I'm pretty passionate about AV.

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
yeah, I'm well aware of Samsung's marketing hype and bs. Samsungs have looked the best to be for many years when it comes to TVs so they've gotten my business. Besides Sony, I'll consider any other brand along with Samsung for my next TVs. It's like Logitech stuff. I can't stand Logitech drivers for mice and peripherals but they make the best hardware (even if they die pretty fast). I would love to get another brand and am always on the lookout but havent been able to yet.Kluden wrote:I got one of the fancy 2015 samsungs (not fake 120hz, but i have it disabled anyways). Re: iPhone 6, 6+
After three years, I finally dropped my phone 6+ out of my pocket and it hit concrete and smashed my screen with like 100 little cracks. I had dropped it several times over the past three years without a scratch but this one did the trick. First time in 9 years I've ever cracked an iphone screen.
Good thing I ordered an Iphone X last Friday and was able to get day one delivery for this Friday. I was debating on whether to wait another year or not but turns out I made the right choice.
I bought a slim case for it but with the phone costing $1,150 and something around $260 to replace the screen if it breaks, I might get a more heavy duty case this time!

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
Happy with my new iPhone X so far.
Not much to say on new phones these days. Just a few things I've noticed:
-Face ID is really nice IMO. Not having to use touch ID to unlock your phone every time is great. FaceID works seemlessly with all previous touchID apps.
-I really like that phone ringer, alarm clock, etc noise all lowers as you bring the phone close to you. FaceID recognizes you're looking at the phone and the alarms/rings are lowered accordingly. That's a proximity thing so maybe some Androids have that feature as well.
-iPhone X is thinner than the 7/7/8+ so easier to hold in one hand and use thumb for gestures etc.
-OLED blacks/colors look great but, as with all OLED screens, slightly angling the display really shifts the colors. Usually you're looking directly at a phone but there are times when it's on your deck on a stand etc where you may not be directly looking from the front. Samsung phone users have had to suffer with this for years so I guess i get to join the party!
-the "notch" where all the sensors etc are placed is a non issue.
-Wireless charging is awesome. That's probably the only thing I was envious of from non Apple phones.

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
To follow up on that… 8 years later I am still using that 6s. It’s been good enough for my needs although I have replaced the battery twice now. After ~2.5-3 years they don’t hold a charge too well.Aslanna wrote: ↑October 22, 2015, 1:49 am Well I finally joined the 21st century and got a smartphone. Mostly due to a new job that will involve a lot of travel for the next few months so I figured that would be a good investment. I decided to go with the 128GB 6s for my first phone.
<…>
I wont be one of those people who upgrade every time a new model comes out. Sheep!
Next year when it’s time for a new battery the iPhone 16 should be out so I’ll probably look to upgrade at that time rather than replace the battery again. From what I’ve read it seems the 15 has been a bit of a mess so I will skip those. In no hurry!
I never did get a screen protector.

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
I have a 13 Pro Max. I've got no big complaints about it, but I would like USB C. I might upgrade next year, but these days 3-5 years is about when I'd upgrade a phone.
Re: iPhone 6, 6+
I don’t use many apps so no real reason to upgrade. I’d say as long as batteries are available that’s the better way to go. Unless you don’t care about money then sure buy a new phone every year.
Now that I work from home I’ve almost considered ditching a cellphone and going back to dialup. Although you can’t really get an authentic landline these days and it’s voice over ip. Unfortunately a lot of shit uses a cell phone for 2FA so it may be a requirement these days.

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
I work from home so don't really need a nice phone. When my Samsung Sxx (whatever the equivalent of an Iphone Pro/Ultra is for Samsung) broke, I bought a $280 Samsung phone the A54 (I think). I don't play games on it (use emulator on PC for that) and I don't surf the net or use apps on it except for listening to audiobooks. It would be a colossal waste of money for me to buy anything more powerful.
The only thing that annoys me is Apple being asses about the messenger. They purposely make communicating between iPhone and Android bad for multimedia like sending images and videos. I hate Apple these days for a lot of reasons but that's the primary one. Like the USB C connector, they are finally changing their messenger to accept the world standard so videos shared between uppity "blue bubble" Apple users and Android users won't be crippled by Apple just to try and keep their walled garden. They don't change to help their users, only because they are forced to by regulation.
The other messanger thing Apple does which makes them jackasses is group chat. If you create a group chat with Apple messenger and add Android people to it, you can't add more android users to the group chat after it's been created. My college FF group is a mix of Apple/Android and it causes all sorts of problems due to Apple being asshats. There's no excuse for it. It's not "better tech" it's pure blockage of easy communication.
When Apple got caught purposely slowing old Iphones with updated IOS versions that ONLY ran slower on older phones because Apple programmed them to do that to encourage upgrades, that was the last straw for me. Fucking over their own users. They'd still be doing it if they didn't get caught. I hate their commercials. They have nothing new to say about their new iPhones so every fucking commercial says, "It's Titanium!" who gives a fuck? Since when did the metal part of a phone matter? It's the glass that breaks. "Titanium is hard to manufacture and process, mainly due to its hardness. This means it's an expensive material and it translates to the price of the final product." = WASTE OF MONEY
Plus I had two apple iphones replaced do to their batteries expanding and splitting the glass on front from the case. Apple replaced both times without saying a word to me because it's one of those things they didn't want to get attention. And I had to replace another Iphone because it had yellow spots on the screen, another known issue they didnt' say a word about replacing the phone.
I'll stick with my cheap android phone and replace it whenever I need to because I can buy three of them or 4 of them for the same cost of a high end Iphone/Samsung phone. But I get it about expensive phones. I'd be getting one as well if I didn't work from home since the start of COVID. 260 hours of commuting in traffic (10.8 full days of driving) and 8,840 miles of gas saved each year. That's worth a lot to me (The no commute/no traffic/no getting ready for work/no dealing face to face with people/no getting sick from those people at work)...plus I can get buy with a cheap phone!

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
I've only had 1 iPhone, and have had no issue with it, so not really looking to switch. But other than an iPhone I'm not all the invested in the IOS ecosystem, either.
Messaging weirdness doesn't matter too much to me.
I'm not a fan of Android although I'm sure they work fine for what they are. I don't have much problem spending $1k on a phone if I can make it last 8-9 years.
I wouldn't bother with 'Titanium' though. Those seem especially fragile if you watch the Jerryrigseverything videos.

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
The only thing the cheap phone I have didnt have that I wanted was wireless charging but I fixed that by buying a wireless pad thingy you put between the case and back of the phone and plug into the USB port on bottom of phone and it's worked great for however long I've had the phone. 2 years I think.
Re: iPhone 6, 6+
That's about how it worked out. I went with a 16 Pro as opposed to the 16 Pro Max which I think is too big. The 6S battery was holding in there so I could have kept waiting but there is too much uncertainty with the tariff situation. No telling how much phones will jump in price in the next 6 months.
Pros:
- The switch from my old phone was easier than I was expecting. I plugged in the new one to charge it and without me doing anything it recognized my old 6S and asked if I wanted to transfer everything and set up the eSIM. I went through that process with no issues. There is a bit of weirdness though as it now thinks it's a 6S in some of the dialogs.
- Finally, USB-C so I can ditch the frayed Lightning cable I had that was holding on for dear life.
- Physically it's not that much larger than the 6S but there is more screen real estate as the 6s had about a half inch 'bezel' on the top and bottom.
- Faster, obviously.
Cons:
- Not sure how I feel about Face ID. I still think that's weird so I have it set for only passcode at this time.
- No home button on the bottom will take some getting used to.
- Camera lenses make it sit weird and wobbly.
- The squarish body feels a bit uncomfortable compared to the rounded edges on the 6S. Although the rounded edges did seem to make it feel more slippery.
- No headphone jack but I can't remember the last time I used it on the 6S. I mostly used that at work to listen to music but that was when I was going into the office which was 5 years ago.
- Pricey, sadly. Hopefully this one will also hold up for 10 years. I may invest in a case for this one which is something i never did for the 6S.

I have the same phone. Under Settings, Apps and Photos, you can decide if you want Apple’s AI to learn from your photos. You can also turn off AI altogether like i did.Aslanna wrote: ↑April 6, 2025, 11:03 pm That's about how it worked out. I went with a 16 Pro as opposed to the 16 Pro Max which I think is too big. If you ever decide to use Face ID, it’s a good idea to turn it off during a protest or whenever you think the police may deprive you of your liberty.
And I highly recommend liquid glass screen protector.
Make love, fuck war, peace will save us.

Grats on the new phone. It's well known I hate Apple with a passion so what I say won't be a surprise.Winnow wrote: ↑December 16, 2023, 1:09 am I work from home so don't really need a nice phone. I don't miss the expensive phones at all. I understand if you don't work from home getting a more expensive phone (Android) but man, the cheapo one works great. It doesn't feel sluggish, I use it mostly as an alarm and for audiobooks.
Oddly, I also like the heavier cheap phone. Feels better in my hand with my cheap thin case. Since everything is cloud based, even ChatGPT works perfectly fine on it which you'd want to use anyway since Apple Siri sucks something awful and Apple is way behind in AI since they haven't found a way to fleece their customers yet. "Apple Intelligence", lol...it's AI and worse AI than everyone else has yet they still had to give it their own name to find a way to make their cult think they did something special with it.
Even the battery on the cheapo phone is good since it doesn't need to be crammed into the thinnest phone possible. It has the same bluetooth and fast wifi an 5G etc. What's the appeal of the more expensive phones these days? The Camera? I'm not being an ass. I can afford an expensive phone, I just can't find a reason to buy one over the $200-$300 phones.
Re: iPhone 6, 6+
Personally I couldn't give a shit about AI on my phone and didn't even turn it on when setting it up. I didn't use Siri on my 6S either other than for the initial novelty. I might look into it in the future if it improves and people start doing interesting stuff with it but for now off it will remain.Winnow wrote: ↑April 7, 2025, 11:49 pm Oddly, I also like the heavier cheap phone. For me I want something quality since I'm not a frequent upgrader like a lot of people. I really intend to use this for as long as I can. If I'm only going to buy something every ~8 years then I don't have a problem spending more on it.Even the battery on the cheapo phone is good since it doesn't need to be crammed into the thinnest phone possible. I have no loyalty to Apple and I don't like their products in general with exception of the phone. I don't want an Android phone as I feel they are less secure. Sure, that may be only due to Apple's marketing but it's how I feel regardless. I mean it is strange you don't see the EU (UK?) suing Google to have them put a back door into Android phones like they are currently doing with Apple. I wonder why that is?
Apple seems to support the iPhone for longer than Android. While I didn't have the latest OS on my nearly 10 year old 6S (I think it was 15.28 or something) it was still getting security updates. Samsung and Google are up to 7 or 8 years on their support but it's not standardized and others are only 4 years. Admittedly that's not a problem for people who upgrade their cheapo $200-$300 phones every couple years but that's not me.
I'm already "invested" in the iPhone ecosystem and have no desire to switch to something else as I'd lose all the chat and call history. Now, even with that being the case, why didn't I buy something like the cheaper 16e? Honestly I sort of forgot that had been released. I still think I would have went with the Pro though. I did consider a 15 Pro refurb which would have saved me $300 but eh... It was worth it for me to get a newer product with a 1 year warranty than to get an older refurb product with a 90 day warranty. For me the 'only' $300 more was justified by the newer device. That may have also been the 128GB model at Microcenter so in reality the 15 Pro was only $200 cheaper since I got the 256GB version of the 160 Pro. I don't use a lot of storage so couldn't really justify going over 256.
And really can you put a price on blue chat bubbles? No. No you cannot. Enjoy your green chats, pleb!

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
I understand the argument. Unfortunately for me, premium phones break just as often as cheap phones. That includes the first 10 years of the iPhone 2007-2017 that I bought a new one every year or every other year. 4 ipads, plenty of ipods before that. Owned a Mac Plus in the late 1980's. I even bought some 27 inch iMac integrated computer which I barely used because the screen looked cool but there was just zero use case for me to use Mac over a PC.
I kind took the opposite approach. Cell phones seem like they have an equal chance of breaking whether cheap or "premium" so If I need to, I can replace my phone 4 times over the course of that time frame or if it actually lasts, will be only $300 and if I do replace it say in three years, the next $300 phone will be as good as the $1000 phone from 3 years ago. I'm not knocking buying a premium phone. They are a stable platform now so don't need to get the latest and greatest every year.
As for AI on the phone itself. I have the Samsung "AI" stuff turned off. I never used "hey google". I have ChatGPT on my phone because it works on the web browser (where I use it 95% of the time on my PC but if I need it, it's on my phone as an app as well. The conversations and images share between platforms which also makes it easier to text a friend or family something I created on the PC. I'm not a fanboi of OpenAI but damn is their image generator good. Having used AI image generators for 2 years straight every day and observed their advancements, I can say that with some meaning behind it. It's next level good and we can only hope the open source ones catch back up for the pr0n and general non censorship.
Siri (or Samsung equivalent) type stuff doesn't seem that useful to me. In a generation or two it will probably be second nature to use it as the instant natural voice conversation becomes seamless but still a choice as opposed to mandatory. Of course, Apple will make some small tweak to their phones so only the "new ones" can use it and do everything in their power to try and sabotage current users like they got caught doing in the past.
The only time I find people using those dumbed down AI is during social gatherings finding the answers to trivia etc.
ChatGPT is unbelievably powerful depending on what you are using it for and if you are even aware of how to use it. It's capable of so many things and I include myself in not knowing all of it's features. This latest image update/upgrade I think is the first time people are taking notice because you actually can operate it using normal language and with it's text/info-chart, modeling etc capabilities you can produce things that are useful instead of gimmicks. Unfortunately some of it's real power is blocked by censorship and I don't mean porn. It can easily colorize your old photos (and they look amazing before they get cancelled halfway through the process) but blocks it as a "violation of policy". They need to sort out some of the ridiculous censorship.
As I get older I will rely on AI more and more as the arthritis kicks in it won't be as easy to type commands etc.
and lets be clear. NOTHING ultimately matters in this world. Any purpose you think you have besides "survival of species" is based on "hoping" that it matters. For me, I find AI fascinating and a blast to learn about and screw around with. As long as each individual is pursuing what they enjoy, that's probably the only important thing since probably nothing matters beyond your own consciousness (whatever that is). "Save the planet...don't save the planet" ...that shit is absolutely meaningless in the long run. If you like basket weaving and that's what really makes you happy, that's just as good as any other reason to live. If you are happy with what you are doing and someone else is telling you different. Tell them to fuck right off because all they are doing is trying to impose what "they" think you should be doing and referring to the beginning of this paragraph...nothing matters and these preachy people are only basing their sermons on "hoping" what they think matters.
My posts typically end up with the meaning/non meaning of life no matter what the topic!
---------
The quote "No matter where you go, there you are" has grown on me over the years. The universe both visible and extended, along with the microverse is fascinating but ultimately, I don't think space/tme matters. If consciousness turns out to be anything other than a freak side effect of natural evolution, I have a feeling we are everywhere all at once...meaning consciousness is not affected by space/time. We have to be in some form of simulation because anything "physical" is ultimately impossible. You can't make something out of nothing but we don't yet know how consciousness works. It may not need anything physical if it's operating from another dimension and is only using our brain as a "receiver/tuner" NDE and DMT trips are interesting. By almost all accounts, the last few moments of your life (when clinically dead) are peaceful...why is that? Evolution/Survival of species is based on one thing...reproducing and keeping the species alive. When you are dead there's no reason for instinct/survival to care how you feel, you won't be contributing to reproduction at that point. That's why the vast majority of these NDE experiences are interesting for that reason. I can't wrap my head around why it would matter if those last moments are peaceful (heading toward the light etc). I don't mean this from a religious angle, just from a evolution point of view. It shouldn't matter if those last moments are peaceful or not. That and DMT experiences are the only "very" thin thread of possibility I can find that provides a possibility of something "beyond".

For someone who hates Apple, you sure have bought a lot of their shit.Winnow wrote: Unfortunately for me, premium phones break just as often as cheap phones.
Also, why are your phones breaking? I have never had any issues with any phone that a restart couldn’t fix.
Make love, fuck war, peace will save us.
Re: iPhone 6, 6+
I didn't hate them back then. Hated them post 2017. Id guess that was around the time they got caught screwing their own customers over by intentionally slowing their OS on old phones to get you to buy a new one even though the old one was capable of much faster operating speeds. That's A first ballet hall of fame asshole move.Spang wrote: ↑April 9, 2025, 12:46 pmFor someone who hates Apple, you sure have bought a lot of their shit.Winnow wrote: Unfortunately for me, premium phones break just as often as cheap phones. You keep throwing that out over and over like those crazy people spouting the Earth is flat or we never landed on the moon. For someone who likes ChatGPT so much you didn't bother to ask what the almighty AI thought on the matter:Winnow wrote: ↑April 9, 2025, 6:05 pm I didn't hate them back then. Hated them post 2017. Now whether they did it to "get you to buy a new one" or not I suppose it all depends on if you believe what they said. Regardless, all you had to do was fucking replace your raggedy-ass battery (or turn off perrormance management) and your phone was no longer 'slow'. .Apple did acknowledge in 2017 that they slowed down older iPhones through software updates. However, the company stated that this was done to prevent unexpected shutdowns caused by aging batteries, not to push users to buy new devices2. The feature, known as "performance management," was introduced to ensure that devices with degraded batteries could still function reliably.
This revelation sparked significant backlash, with many accusing Apple of a lack of transparency. In response, Apple apologized, reduced the cost of battery replacements, and introduced a feature in iOS that allows users to monitor their battery health and disable performance management if desired
And yeah I don't know why all your phones keep breaking. Do you abuse them or what? So far I'm 2-2 on the survivability of my phones.

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
Are you kidding me? That's their EXCUSE. They were found guilty and paid
If they were in the right, they wouldn't have paid half a billion dollars. I can't believe you fell for the company line. Every company will try to make an excuse when they get caught red handed. With the lawyers Apple has at their disposal you know it was serious if they couldn't "lawyer" their way out of it.Complainants will receive a cut of a $500m (£394m) settlement which works out to around $92 (£72) per claim.
Re: iPhone 6, 6+
I'll make a deal with you.. You stop falling for the Republican party line and I'll stop falling for whatever you think it is Apple is doing. Or has done. Pick one.

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
Let me explain how class action lawsuits work.
After the company (Apple) determines they're fucked and guilty and agree to pay up, damage control kicks in.
1. Once Apple agrees to pay, the opposing lawyers don't give a shit how Apple chooses to "phrase" their excuses because the class action lawyers are going to get paid and to a lessor extent the people that got screwed over get their money as well.
2. Apple has the best lawyers available. After they know they lost, all they can do is try and make it sound like some "we were trying to do the best thing for our customers." I will tell you first hand. there wasn't a damn thing wrong with my battery and I noticed after several OS upgrades my phone feeling slower/sluggish. That's with only a two year old phone not some ancient phone. Apple slowed the OS intentionally on old iphones because Apple makes their money on hardware. For someone planning to keep their phone for 9 years, I'd think this would upset you more since you're getting fucked over by Apple slowing your perfectly good phone. Maybe you like slow phones. It's like a religion. Apple knows best! If this lawsuit didn't happen you'd be enjoying a slower phone after your first year for no reason other than Apple's greed. They got caught this time but that is their mindset and who knows what else they do to keep their cult worshiping "Apple Intelligence".
Apple's dick moves to make their bubbles feel "special" to the kiddies as a sort of techo bullying for school kids to get them to pressure parents into iPhones I understand...fucking over their own customers is inexcusable.

How do you justify purchasing Android phones when Google has a history of “fucking over their own customers” too?Winnow wrote: fucking over their own customers is inexcusable.

Re: iPhone 6, 6+
It's because if I had to make glasses out of their name I'd be able to see through the two O's. You can't do that with Apple's name.
Re: iPhone 6, 6+
Just to follow-up I guess the reason I had support so long on the 6s is because they sold it until 2018 so the average iPhone, which is typically only sold for one year, would only have 7 or so years of support before they are labeled "obsolete".Aslanna wrote: ↑April 8, 2025, 10:03 am Apple seems to support the iPhone for longer than Android.
I'm all about transparency here!
