Spare me the cheese; I've got enough in my fridge already.Adelrune Argenti wrote:How can you actually beleive the revisionist history that is shoveled down the throats of university students in the US? By doing so, you are making a mockery of the sacrifice, the determination, and the bravery of the greatest generation this nation has seen.
I'm not belittling the U.S. involvement against Germany; I was merely responding to the claim that our fighting Germany and Japan at the same time was the equivalent of fighting 2 fullscale wars. It was not. The truth of the matter is, had the Japanese not attacked us, we never would have gone to war with either Germany or Japan. We were extremely isolationist in the wake of WWI. Sure, we had been supplying the European allies, but it took Pearl Harbor to bring us into the fray.
That said, by the time we reached Germany, the Soviets had already worn the Nazi forces down to the edge of defeat. Hitler's attempts to invade Moscow killed off millions of German soldiers, and diverted the cream of his crop to a no-win situation in a hostile climate. The Russians held their position admirably, then launched the counter-offensive that swept Hitler out of Eastern Europe. The U.S. deserves props for driving the Germans out of France, but our role in WWII was mostly to take the pressure off the other guys. We were the support, not the first line. Anyone who tells you otherwise is fooling himself.
Could Hitler have been defeated without the U.S.'s involvement? Probably, but it would have taken a few years (and many millions of lives) longer. In other words, our role in defeating Germany was not 'decisive,' per se, but it was critical.
I never said anything to that effect. In truth, the European Theater wasn't so much "won" by anybody as much as it was lost by Hitler. Hitler turned the tide of the war against himself when he marched into the Russian winter. From there, the Russians beat him in a war of attrition. The result was the crumbling of the German position in Europe.Adelrune Argenti wrote:I am taking exception to the statement that the war in the European Theater was "won" by them without the contributions of the US.

Hitler commited suicide (allegedly) on the first day the soviets rolled into Berlin.Cartalas wrote:Was this before or after the fall of Hitler?
There's an interesting account of it here which was first told by one of Hitler's personal secretaries. Give it a read if you have a few minutes.
Actually that whole timeline is fairly accurate and interesting, and there are some great pictures in some of the links.

Yeah, I love how Germans can just compress a bunch of different words into a single word. Our White House, for example, should be called the presidenthouse. My car should be called reallyfuckingsweetcarthatIdrivealot.kyoukan type-R wrote:edit: the word "Führerbunker" makes me giggle. germans are so cute.
Coincidentally, our plans to construct a "Furorbunker" collapsed after it was decided that building it would be a bad PR move.
