That's not really news. For whatever reason Mario Kart is really popular. The Wii version sold over 35 million so that's like a third of all Wii owners. I'd imagine the Wii U would perform similarly.

The WiiU is failing. To put up such good sales numbers despite that fact is definately news.

Can the WiiU hold a decent momentum going into the Smash Bros and beyond is the real question. I would like nothing more than a 180 for the console, much like what happened with the 3DS.

It might be news to you.. It's not really news to me since it doesn't change the number of Wii Us already out there. Whether it's "failing" or not there's still over 6 million Wii U's already sold. If a third of the people went out and bought the Wii U version, like happened with the Wii version, there you go that's at least a million there. Not sure why it would be so surprising to anyone.

It's news to the video game industry. I pay attention to all if it, not just parts of it. For instance, the 3DS was the second best selling hardware in May behind first place PS4, which has been the top selling hardware for 5 months straight.

It's all related and intertwined. Just because you don't care doesn't mean it's not news lol.

Was referring to the large part of past gen. That whole "Playstation Family" stuff.

Looking at those numbers though.. The VITA outselling the PS3 and a stones throw from the 360 is pretty amazing. They did good numbers with the new hardware.

I'm scratchingy head at that one. It's not like the Vita has had any good games released since forever. Sony has not been actively marketing the device as a PS4 companion either. I'm guessing that PS+ free games along with cross buy and overall synergy amoung all the Sony platforms may be starting to pay off? Just a guess though.

a) New slim model
b) Borderlands 2 bundle. Not the greatest version of the game but it's still popular. And if people can get it 'free' then why not.

I don't expect the June numbers to show them hitting over 10k.

It's news in the same way any other 'fact' is. I'm not disputing it's news in that regard. It's just not surprising news. People really like Mario Kart. A new one comes out that sells well should not be surprising news to anybody that has been paying attention to the video game industry.

Regardless, it was going to be a fail imo. You should be able to stream any game you owned on the ps3 for free. That would be the only use I'd have for the service.

PLaystation NOW needs to stream current and past PN+ "game of the month" games for free as well as offer some sort of "all you can eat" service for PS3 games that are 1+ years old.

It might work if designed that way.

Survey Says Chinese Gamers More Interested In PS4

NetEase put out a survey asking Chinese netizens which gaming system they preferred. The survey gave Chinese netizens the choice of selecting which system they would buy, the PS4, Xbox One, PS Vita/Vita TV, all systems, none, or purchasing consoles off the nation's gray market.

Of the 6488 people surveyed so far, a whopping 57.3 percent voted that they would purchase a PS4. About 19 percent chose to continue buying consoles on the gray market, and only about 10 percent said they were willing to invest in an Xbox One.

Ubisoft selling over twice as many units on PS4 than Xbox One

Ubisoft is selling over twice as many units on PlayStation 4 than Xbox One, figures from the company have revealed.

As detailed in the company's latest sales report, 36 per cent of its total Q1 sales came from PlayStation 4 titles, with Xbox One making up just 17 per cent.

I guess that makes sense since PS4 has sold twice as many consoles. That and multi-platform games, for the most part, are superior on PS4 so that's the place to be.

PS4 Made Up Largest Part of Ubisoft Game Sales During the Last 3 Months, Doubles Xbox One and PC Sales
Driven by Watch Dogs and Child of Light, the last 3 months brought strong PS4 software sales for Ubisoft.

Last week, publisher Ubisoft revealed that its recent game releases have sold very well. So well, in fact, that the company's sales in the last three months have risen 374 percent over the same time period in 2013. But one of the big questions during Ubisoft's earnings call was how those sales were distributed over the platforms. On the day of the call, the company also published a breakdown of the software sales by system, and it turns out that games sold best on the PlayStation 4 by a wide margin.

Driven by a very strong performance by March's release of Watch Dogs, over 50 percent of Ubisoft's software revenue came from the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 during the past three months. But Ubisoft games on the PS4 sold much better than on Xbox One. Sales on the PS4 made up 36 percent of Ubisoft's revenue, more than double the One's 17 percent. It's interesting to note that PS4 revenue also more than doubled sales on PC, which came in at 14 percent of total sales.

If developers/publishers want to make money obviously PLAYSTATION is the superior choice. Microsoft lost this generation... Better luck next time Xbox fans!

NPD June 2014: PS4 Beats Xbox One Despite $399 Bundle

Research firm NPD has revealed their sales figure for the month of June 2014, and as expected its Playstation 4 that beats Xbox One despite $399 Kinectless Bundle, for 6th month in a row, an astonishing feat for Sony and Playstation family.

PS4 is absolutely the place to be. It's interesting that the MS Apology Tour didn't turn out as well as they would've hoped. I think MS has made amazing strides in correcting their opening mistakes, but those mistakes were so monumental that the industry itself will be talking about them for decades as a lesson in what not to do.

Titanfall didn't even chart and PvZ sold more on 360 than Xbone. The Xbone versions of every game in the top 10 sold less than their PS4 counterparts. MS does not want to see things like that.

With MS dumping it's TV division, focusing on video games, firing/hiring the right people, dropping Kinect/price, trying to bring XBL to PS+ value with it's freebe games, and getting some great exclusive games this fall, it's obvious they are listening to the overwhelming criticism. I believe MS has done the very best it can and has done so in a very short amount of time. The numbers are speaking volumes though. The PS4 is more powerful, has more players, better value for PS+ vs XBL, better synergy between devices, better controller, and a tidal wave of forward momentum that does not seem to be slowing down. And while MS can fix game line ups and adjust pricing, they will always have the less powerful console. That isn't going to change and gamers know it.

I would totally disagree with the value being the same for gold/PS+. I've actually had a desire to play the games I've got on PS+, Xbox has put ancient titles or new stuff that looks like shit out for their offerings.

Well to be honest I haven't played any of the free games that have come down the pipe except for the VITA ones and Uncharted 3 on the PS3.

I do plan on playing DR2 at some point and I'm playing Guacamelee on the Xbox One that is free this month. Halo: Spartan Assault and Max: The Curse of Brotherhood I already owned (Since I owned Spartan Assault on Windows 8, I got the Xbox One and Windows Phone versions for free).

PC Dominates Gaming Hardware Sales

PC gaming has expanded its lead over consoles in the hardware market, and may safely be called "dominant" in the industry, according to a recent study by John Peddie Research.

The study found the PC gaming market is worth $21.5 billion USD - over twice the size of its competitors in the console industry. The report took into account market sales of personal computers, accessories, upgrades, and other such form of hardware used for gaming purposes. Senior Gaming Analyst Ted Pollak says it's being driven by both casual gamers moving to mobile platforms, and by more hardcore gamers who desire gaming experiences not available through console technology.

Jon Peddie, President of JPR, attributes part of the success of the PC hardware market simply to more advanced technology:

"Nvidia, Intel, and AMD have enthusiast CPUs and GPUs that are so powerful, when combined with SSD's and fast memory, they absolutely trounce the computing power and gaming capabilities of the newest console generation,” and that “committed PC gamers...are power users and pay thousands for the ability to play games at very high settings.”

I haven't turned on either console in months. For me, neither console is appealing to me and PC games dominate my play time.

"Perception" does play a factor and that's where Sony has been doing a good job in the marketing department. As for actual games you play, PS4 has nothing over Xbox One and given a side by side blind test, pretty much every one of you wouldn't know which game was playing on a PS4 or Xbox One. I play the PS3 more than the PS4 because the best games are still being released for last gen consoles with Sony. PS4 owners are flipping their shit over what appears to be a very average shooter in Destiny because there's simply nothing else to play and they're frothing at the mouth to play anything. Xbox One had that but months ago with Titanfall. Welcome to the party PS4! People"perceive" PS4 to be in a better position but what I see are delays and 1st party Sony developer issues in the news. Microsoft has been very open about making huge changes to try and appeal to morons that didn't understand the way cooler online digital sharing that they had in place. It proves a point that you can't let yourself out think the moron majority. Only Apple seems to have the skills to do what's best for end users while consulers cry about it every step of the way and still come out on top. Of the few people that drop iOS to go with Android, the number or people that return to Apple is staggering. The biggest "flop" in Apples recent products was the Iphone 5c which STILL outsold any Samsung phone released. Samsung is reporting it's worst sale quarter in over two years. Hope you enjoyed all those billions wasted in "cute" Apple bashing ads. Didn't work! But I digress.

For me, the gap between consoles and PC gaming time will only increase when I get the Oculus Rift. Sony is making strides with Morpheus, but having spent the past 5 months tirelessly reading the VR forums about the technology involved, it's not happening on the PS4. It's simply not close to being powerful enough. Even current extreme PCs can't handle high quality VR games and the technology isn't even out that will allow you to push the pixels of true VR. (next version of HDMI ports for 4K gaming) I'm not looking for the cheapest gaming. I'm looking for the best gaming experiences.

In the end, both PS4 and Xbox One have the feel of being late to the party and unable to handle the coming flood of 4K gaming. I can't blame either company as PS3 and 360 were ancient and really showing their age in graphics but they waited so long that they pushed up against 4K. Developers have the capability now of making awesome looking games but both PS4 and Xbox One struggle to even get 1080p/60fps. As for exclusives, I'm more intrested in the games Xbox One has upcoming than PS4's delayed selection.

PS4 is Crushing Xbox One in Germany According to Official Sales Numbers

A big deal has been made of next-gen hardware sales, but for the most part we’ve only been given a look at how they are faring in North America and the UK. Thanks to Media Control GfK, today we get to see how they have sold during in Germany during the last nine months.

Media Control GfK has released its June 2014 LTD hardware figures. The totals are the following:

PlayStation 4: 540,000
Xbox One: 170,000
PlayStation 3: 4,200,000
Xbox 360: 2,100,000

GfK is regarded as the NPD Group equivalent for Europe, holding a strong reputation for accurate numbers. Even if they were off by 10% in favor of the Xbox One, the PS4 would be selling around triple what the Xbox One is managing.

In Germany the PS4 is currently priced at 394,90 euros while the Xbox One without a Kinect is 373,17 euros, giving Microsoft a price advantage in the country. Despite this, no Xbox One hardware or software can be seen in the best-seller lists of Amazon or other online retailers.

Not surprising. Every nation is PlayStation nation!

Sony sued over Killzone: Shadow Fall's 1080p promises

A California class-action lawsuit alleges Sony Computer Entertainment America engaged in "deceptive marketing" of Killzone: Shadow Fall for PS4 when it advertised the game running in 1080p. After launch, Digital Foundry found that the multiplayer portion of Shadow Fall runs in upscaled 960 x 1080 resolution, a step below 1080p – and law firm Edelson PC and plaintiff Douglas Ladore see a case there.

The suit, on behalf of Ladore and "all others similarly situated," seeks damages of more than $5 million. It also calls for Sony to more accurately advertise Shadow Fall's multiplayer resolution.

"Sony admitted that it did not in fact design Killzone to display multiplayer graphics in 1080p, but instead used a technological shortcut that was supposed to provide 'subjectively similar' results," the suit argues. "But Sony never advertised and convinced consumers to buy a technological shortcut."

Good old Sony. Hey, they suckered a bunch in with their marketing skills. You can't flat out lie though. Whatever it takes to get market share I guess. (Drive a launch title anyone?) If you have a spare $100.00, you can play a few hours of streaming games.

Take a look at Samsung. The bad news is piling up for them. They took pot shots at Apple. It didn't help in the long run. Keep an eye on Sony to head the same direction as SamSung.

The Xbox 360 disgruntled users (mostly due to slick Sony marketing brainwashing) will come back to Xbox One just like 90% of iOS users that try Android come back to iOS.

Sony has just issue a statement from the July NPD report. In it, they’ve stated the following:

PlayStation 4 was #1 in sales for the seventh consecutive month and remains the cumulative leader for next generation game consoles.
PlayStation 4 led the month for next generation software sales by a considerable margin, with The Last of Us Remastered taking the #1 spot.
PlayStation 4 games accounted for more than half of total next generation software sales.
For the second consecutive month, PlayStation was #1 in combined home console hardware sales (PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3).

Other notable global PlayStation 4 sales milestones from this week:

PlayStation 4 sales have surpassed 10 million units sold through to consumers worldwide, demonstrating the fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation hardware history.
More than 30 million copies of PS4 software have been sold in retail stores globally and through digital downloads on PS Store.

PlayStation Network is down; hackers claim they did it (Update)

PlayStation Network is offline in North America, a day ahead of announced scheduled maintenance. A hacker group on Twitter is claiming its attack took the service offline.

Update: The same hacking group claiming responsibility also Tweeted a bomb threat at an American Airlines flight carrying John Smedley, the president of Sony Online Entertainment. It was diverted to Phoenix from its route into San Diego.

Users who try to log in to PSN or the PlayStation Store on their PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 consoles are given a message that PSN is down for maintenance. Sony announced Thursday that PSN would be offline for routine maintenance from noon to about 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday.

That's kind of fucked up. (the part about the bomb threat)

Update: Sony, through the PlayStation blog, confirmed the outage and indicated it is due to a denial-of-service attack. As of 6 p.m., PlayStation Network remains offline.

Here is the full statement:

Like other major networks around the world, the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network have been impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic.

Although this has impacted your ability to access our network and enjoy our services, no personal information has been accessed.

We will continue to work towards fixing this issue and hope to have our services up and running as soon as possible.

We regret any inconvenience this may have caused.

Those people need to get a life.

Battle.Net was also affected and XBL had a few issues last night as well.

Any idea what prompted this at all? I haven't seen any news items that would've pissed off these "hackers" to do this. (especially the bomb hoax on Smedly's flight).

PSA: PSN gets knocked down again

The PlayStation Network servers are currently out of commission for the second time in as many days. Sony posted a notice to its official Twitter account that its engineers are "aware of connectivity issues" and "are working to resolve" them.

PSN suffered an outage for the majority of Sunday thanks to an apparent DDoS attack (distributed denial of service). Sony noted that no personal information was accessed in the attack. b=Both PSN and Sony Entertainment Network were "impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic," though it's unclear if that's also causing today's issues. We'll update this post when PSN is up and running again.
