Stuff to watch on Netflix
Since a lot of people have Netflix. Post here to recommend movies, documentaries and TV shows that people can access on the service.
For starters, Margin Call, a movie with Kevin Spacey and that HEROES/Spock actor is on Netflix. It's about the huge market crash that took place at the beginning of the housing crash. It's slow but interesting.

Ooh, totally grabbing a spot for when I have more time to put a list together. You actually had a good idea, color me shocked!
Re: Stuff to watch on Netflix
They actually have a pretty robust selection of foreign cult classics.
Oldboy, and some of those fun Takashi Miike movies are available. Always a fun time killer.

Re: Stuff to watch on Netflix
Have watched a lot, but for anyone who likes Kenneth Branagh's Wallander on PBS/BBC...netflix has the original swedish ones, and they are good as well if you're into Wallander. Its a coastal town in sweden, cop drama, following the cheif inspector wallander inside and outside of work. Fairly interesting crime and run downs on characters.
If you want to compare the two, they have one or two series from the BBC Wallander as well with Kenneth Branagh....and for the "Geek" tie-in to all things we love, he directed Thor. He's also the villian and directing the new Jack Ryan film coming out this year. While not a part of the Avengers team with Whedon, he is responsible for the dude who plays Loki...and that alone is props deserving.

Watched Idiots and Angels earlier, good Plympton movie. Was going to add slightly odd but that goes without saying.
Lately:
Cow and Chicken
Ren and Stimpy
Red Dwarf (again)
Venture Bros
Empires: Martin Luther
Carl Panzram
Bunch of good stuff on Buddhism and Indian history. I'd always thought the British had infected/inflicted bureaucracy in India, possibly was the other way 'round. Or perhaps some unholy blending of bureaucratic tendencies.... They'd done it do themselves 1000+ years before the Brits arrived.

From ~60 to 300/share in three months. Netflix is on one hell of a roll.
If you want good shows on Netflix, keep pirating them! Before buying shows, Netflix checks piracy sites to make sure people are watching
One of Netflix's goals has always been to combat piracy of TV shows and movies — if you can get all the shows and movies you want for only a few dollars a month, the company hopes you'll stop downloading them illegally. But as the service rolls out in the Netherlands, Reed Hastings' team has gone so far as to actually check piracy statistics in determining what shows to buy. VP of Content Acquisition Kelly Merryman told Tweakers that "with the purchase of series, we look at what does well on piracy sites." That led to Netflix buying Prison Break, for instance, a commonly torrented show in the Netherlands.
Merryman told Tweakers about some of Netflix's other considerations as well, including shows like The Voice that the company decides are more suited to live audiences — that's why we'll also likely never see Netflix competing for sports contracts, or airing an evening news show. Sadly, though Reed Hastings also told Tweakers that he'd love to help Game of Thrones solve its massive piracy problem by airing the show on Netflix, HBO's apparently not interested. But if Netflix can convince other studios and networks that piracy isn't better than an Emmy, it'll have an easy sales pitch to make for a lot of popular shows around the world.

Watched a few episodes of My Name is Earl at a co-workers suggestion. Can't decide if it's funny enough to slog through the slow spots.
Earl reminds me of a handful of people I know who live in Pensacola as that's where their car broke down or where they ran out of money to go any farther.

Dead End was a decent horror film with a comedic tone. End was predictable and a let down, but the ride there was pretty good.

It was ok. I found it a bit pretentious in places. Similar to Weeds. Which makes sense since the same person is responsible for both. I didn't really like how slow time seems to pass but I guess that's how they'll stretch a 15 month prison sentence into 5+ seasons.Winnow wrote:I watched this series and liked it. Re: Stuff to watch on Netflix
Well the first season was good. Had decent character development. It's possible one season is enough for it though...kinda like Misfits and HEROES should have ended sooner than they did. Weeds surprised me with it's ability to remain entertaining for probably 3 seasons before it started to head downhill.Aslanna wrote:It was ok. I found it a bit pretentious in places. Watch Arrow!
On a side note, I've been watching it using my Xbox One on Netflix and the picture is extremely good. I'd have to find the article but I believe Xbox/Playstation Netflix apps are capable of better image quality than the PC Browser plug in. My only comparison is watching it on my iMac's 2,560 x 1,440 screen using Firefox plug in and on my Samsung 46" TV using Xbox One and the image looks better via Xbox One/PS4. Both are streaming at 1080P but I think the console apps allow for a higher bandwidth making the image better.
edit: here's the answer:
Makes sense now. Use your Xbox One or PS4 to stream Netflix as it's better quality than your TV's built in Netflix or even your PC's browser plug in.

Netflix subscribers around the world can now tune into the company's highest quality Super HD streams, providing they have a device and internet connection willing to play nice.
The Super HD streams, which arrive at a higher bitrate than the existing Full HD 1080 streams, promise improved picture quality as the movie or TV show is subject to less compression.

Re: Stuff to watch on Netflix
Any of you people that thought the Wii graphics looked good, this tier is for you! As someone that doesn't have wall eyed vision, I'm loving the less compressed HD stream on the Xbox ONE (and PS4 if you have that) i wouldn't go back to normal compressed HD Netflix, much less SD.Netflix intros cheaper standard definition streaming plan for new subscribers
If you consider yourself both extremely frugal and averse to the luxuries of seeing Hollywood eye candy actors in Super HD, Netflix's new SD tier could be right up your alley. The streaming service has begun offering a low-end plan for new subscribers only that'll allow standard definition streaming to one device -- that's right, no simultaneous viewing -- for $6.99 per month. We can confirm the plan is indeed now live as it appeared when we attempted to sign up for new service though, as TechCrunch reports, that may not be the case for everyone.
Take note, this recent plan addition is only $1 cheaper than the basic HD tier that lets users stream to two devices at once, making the SD plan's cost benefit a bit dubious. So, if you're really counting your pennies and haven't bothered to upgrade to an HD-capable TV or tablet or phone (which makes us wonder if you even have broadband), then by all means, have at this promo. You're also probably not into account sharing anyway. And really, that's what that extra $1/mo is for, right? Right.
Re: Stuff to watch on Netflix
Watched ten episodes of The Cape on Netflix. The series only lasted one season back in 2010.
The bad guy "general" from Revolution plays the role of The Cape. Summer Glau (Firefly) and one of the actors from Platoon is also in it. Corn factor is high, especially in the first few episodes. Worth giving a chance if you like comic based series.

Yeah, Sherlock and Arrow were 2 huge surprises for the wife and I. The first episode of Arrow is better than anything shown in the first season of SHEILD.
Re: Stuff to watch on Netflix
I've been downloading season two of Arrow as the episodes are aired and it's remained an excellent show. Looking forward to the Flash TV series as well this fall. The boosted Super HD bandwidth on Netflix PS4/Xbox One for Arrow make it look even better.Fairweather Pure wrote:Yeah, Sherlock and Arrow were 2 huge surprises for the wife and I. Re: Stuff to watch on Netflix
Seriously? I grabbed 4 episodes since my brother liked it, couldn't even be bothered to watch the other three after suffering through the horror of the first episode. Unless there was an implied ass rape by the magical cock of knowing, he had way too much shit on his character sheet for the backstory that was presented.Fairweather Pure wrote:Yeah, Sherlock and Arrow were 2 huge surprises for the wife and I. Still not sure why, but I watched the first season of Arrow. Some really great ideas thwarted by really really bad ones. They try to blend dark with after school specials to ill effect.
But alas, it is a CW show so there you go.

Re: Stuff to watch on Netflix
It took a few episodes to get into Arrow. I wouldn't try to present the show as anywhere near one of the classics like Breaking bad, Deadwood, Rome, etc. I can see why it wouldn't appeal to everyone but at the same time, it rises above many other shows out there. Being what it is (DC property), and the channel it's on, it's not going to to have an Al Swearengen character in it.
I also liked "The Cape" so am probably the perfect demographic for the show. I can be a little more forgiving than most when it comes to the genre.

Re: Stuff to watch on Netflix
Oh certainly not. It could not ever be considered real drama. Not really enough tension and the writing is, well, CW. Still though, it is a decent time-killer and there are some elements that are pretty fun. After all, it is a B-hero show. Hoping that the second season is better and hits from a different angle.
We already know that the "island experience" will be a major plot device throughout, or at least for the foreseeable future. I found myself far more drawn in by the island stuff, aside from some egregious writing issues there. Very cool to see Crixus (Spartacus actor Manu Bennett)! Glad to see his acting chops are still well-honed.
I suppose I will keep watching to see how that all plays out.

I guess that link points to DVDs. They have it for streaming too but unfortunately it doesn't appear you can search Netflix without having an account. Annoying!

Re: Stuff to watch on Netflix
I guess this is the catch-all Netflix thread!
It’s official, folks! Orange Is the New Black Season 2 is coming to Netflix on June 6th, 2014. The announcement was secretly revealed at the end of the House of Cards 2nd season finale just after the ending credits.
The show which is available only on Netflix will feature 13 episodes, with almost all cast members making a re-appearance. Laura Prepon (Alex) won’t be a regular though. Initial rumours pointed to her choosing to opt-out of season 2 (for unknown reasons), but a later update from a Netflix rep denied these allegations saying that she would be back for a limited number of episodes.
There aren’t any clues about what season 2 is going to be about, but at least we know for sure that Uzo Aduba (Crazy Eyes), Taryn Manning (Doggett), and Danielle Brooks (Taystee) are back. Lorraine Toussaint will be joining the cast as ‘Vee’, as a new inmate and ex-drug lord who used children to run the operations of her business.
