You keep assuming no one that was/is on Windows 7 was already running Pro. I'm running Ultimate, personally... Still not seeing any reason to upgrade to Windows 8.

Mmm yeah, you're a storage expert, I can tell. If you were half as knowledgeable as you thought you were, you'd still be a keen amateur.Winnow wrote: Well sure, I can see running RAID 5 as being a really stupid thing to do with the incredibly long rebuild times involved. Sounds like you have more than one problem with your HD storage strategy.
Back to the subject. What we're talking about is you being so fucking cheap, you won't pay 29.99 to upgrade a critical piece of software that makes life much easier for you, protecting whatever you do. You won't even cough up less than the price of a video game to protect your personal work. Lets stay on topic here. If you don't feel Acronis is worth it, there are alternatives. If you don't think 60.00 for Windows Pro with Acronis is worth it, that's a value decision, not a quality decision.
As to price, I won't pay $30 to "upgrade" something I don't need, so I can can access an OS upgrade that isn't. Acronis 2012 seems to work pretty well, that's not at all a guaranteed proposition moving to 2013 based on years of experience with their enterprise product, so it might even be worse than a pointless upgrade.
Anyway, the whole point here is to let people know that a commonly used application will be a gotcha if they fall prey to your Windows 8 fellation.

I love the fact that through my Microsoft account, a configurable set of system settings will follow me on my home PC (primary login), the office Surface RT (primary login but locked using a PIN instead of the actual password) or my office PC (primary login is my office domain account, with my Microsoft Account associated to it.)
Let's face it, my computing is done wherever I end up being.

Well, it needs to be harder to get to, so you're forced to read the manual to work out which control panel you want anyway. First thing I wanted to change was that fugly Space Needle picture, but you have to go to the settings page on your phone computer, not the control panel.
It reminds me of nothing so much as having my entire laptop run under a VM that randomly decides to background the guest machine and show you the host interface, hence two completely seperate UIs and seperate control panels.

I agree with that! Many PC OEMs are dissatisfied with what Microsoft has done with Windows 8 and the way the company has handled the negative response to the operating system. Privately, one OEM source told me that Microsoft is "destroying" the PC industry, while another claimed that Windows 8 has "handed over millions of customers to Apple."

Re: Official Windows 8 Blows Thread
Windows 8 is the most reliable OS I've ever used but people are so caught up in the new start screen, which is gone with the click of a button, they forget the rest of the OS is outstanding.
8.1 allows you to use the desktop background also as the start screen background so that should take care of a few of the complaints since most are clueless anyway and just don't like the entire screen being taken up by the start screen.

Changes to NTFS blow too, it's not nearly as resilient as it was. I've had filesystems on two disks corrupt due to power loss.

Re: Official Windows 8 Blows Thread
I agree with that. I don't think 7 is better than 8. The issue people have is the metro style start screen. The OS itself is rock solid with plenty of tweaks to improve usability when you're using the desktop which is 99.9% of the time. Best thing I can say about Windows 8 is I don't give it a second thought because it works great.Aabidano wrote:Vista is the only real dog, 7 is arguably better than 8, so was XP post SP3.Winnow wrote:It's not hard to support Microsoft when Windows 8 is the most stable version of the OS I've ever used.

It's pretty much Windows versions competing with themselves. People hang onto their PCs a lot longer these days and most don't upgrade until they buy a new PC.
Keep an eye on Linux. Big things are happening there! Linux is just the lipstick on the pacman mouth.
A pie chart showing Mac vs Vista would be more interesting. Mac is in a battle for market share with the worst of the Windows OS versions.

Ubuntu is usable by the average idiot.
Suspect in the "serious" server market linux will continue to gain market share over time. IBM has made somewhat of a comeback.
While you can certainly work around it Windows is still hampered by the architecture.

The days of tinkering with your OS are over. People want an OS that works with no hassles. Besides the Start screen which people are all in a huff about (hint, press the windows key), Windows 8 is the easiest OS yet for plug and play hardware/software.
If people enjoyed hassles, the 10,000 various Linux releases would own more than 1 percent plus change of the market.
Linux = free
Mac OS Upgrades = $29.99
Windows = $100-$399.00 a copy
Windows = 91.51% of the market

Re: Official Windows 8 Blows Thread
I've been using 8.1 now for the last few days. Seems pretty solid overall. The only real glitch that I've noticed is a bug that crept in to a specific scroll list control that is heavily used by Twitter clients that will cause the list to jerk around a lot. Apparently this is already fixed in subsequent builds internally at MS. Hopefully they will patch the preview.
When you sign in to a new PC now, it will automatically reconfigure your start screen in the exact same layout as all your other win 8.1 machines (leaving white spaces for desktop apps that you may have pinned) and reconfigure it exactly the same.
I have noticed it giving some funky results when using various resolutions (19" monitor vs my Surface Pro at 10.1 for example) but for the most part is works seamlessly. It will also re-install all (I believe pinned and unpinned but I have to check) metro apps that you own.
Boot to desktop works as advertised even if the setting is somewhat buried.
A lot of the settings have been added to the PC Settings section of Metro meaning you have to go to the Control Panel a lot less frequently.
The new search view is really well done. I just wish we got the really rich view that the US is getting. Outside the Us is cool, the one in the US is really good.
This really is a major polish update to Windows 8 and they did some great work imo.

They never existed for most people, the iDevice is aimed at making users even more stupid and Win8 panders to that idea. Just because it profitable doesn't mean it's a good idea (like curbside recycling).Winnow wrote:The days of tinkering with your OS are over. People want an OS that works with no hassles.

Re: Official Windows 8 Blows Thread
New computer, came with 8 on it, thought I'd try again for the hell of it.
List of issues in a couple hours:
- Windows Key does not take you to desktop after boot, you have to click desktop first, then it toggles. (why?)
- Clicking a magnet link "opens" uTorrent back in the middle of the screen at "default" settings, even though it's open already in half screen. (Why?)
- Starting up restored Steam game with Windows Live Games attached (GTA4), apparently Windows7 version of Windows Live Games isn't compatible with Win8, even though it's just a Xbox achievement wrapper. WTF.
- Every different type of video file wanted to start with a Metro full screen app, every one of them had to be adjusted seperately.
- Metro search shit instantly tells me I have no files like "profiles" and gives me no options to search wider, ye olde Explorer search says I have 16.
It's a festival of awesome.

Re: Official Windows 8 Blows Thread
I didn't mind GFWL originally as I enjoyed getting Achievements in PC games but their wrapper overdid it and then they changed course and it's now integrated in the Windows Store Apps instead.
That being said, having to set something to compatibility mode and Always run as administrator before installing is not user error.
GFWL is being retired next year anyways. I wouldn't be surprised to see Rockstar patch this so that it took advantage of Steam before then.
Still like Windows 8 personally. Windows 8.1 will make some nice, needed changes too.

Re: Official Windows 8 Blows Thread
I had a big failure on my PC, so we bought a new HP Envy. I know HP sucks but it is a pretty nice setup, I moved my harddrives over. This was my first experience with windows 8 and I am not digging it. Also can't get itunes to work on it. I click on the icon and it sits. I tried changing permissions, tried changing the compatibility and it started to work but froze. Can't seem to find a common complaint for this. Just the standard general complaints. Is Windows 8 having issues with Itunes, or is the HP Connected Music feature trying to override? Thoughts? Help??? Please!!

Not sure what's going on there. I've had iTunes work on Windows 8 and 8.1 Preview without a single issue.
Re: Official Windows 8 Blows Thread
I use iTunes on my iMac (about the only think it's good for). Most likely it's a conflict with HP music software. Try uninstalling that.
