Report: The Man in Charge of Xbox Is Leaving Microsoft

Don Mattrick, who's been the public face for all things Xbox for the last few years, will be leaving Microsoft to take a top leadership role at Zynga
Oh god. It just makes way too much sense.

Can Peter Moore come back now? Please?

Really not sad at Mattrick leaving though. That dude always had an air of "condescending asshole" about him.

A lot of the cool community features that made the 360 great started dying when he took over as well. (API's that created mygamercard and others for example as well as the inside xbox videos).

Frank Loyd Wright probably never thought his philosophies would guide video game consoles. Yet, during today's keynote at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference, Xbox Creative Directer Carl Ledbetter detailed that the architect influenced the creative process behind Redmond's new gaming hardware. His team of "almost thirty" went through countless hardware designs for the console and over 200 controller prototypes before settling on final models. Throughout, Xbox One's goals remained modest: simplicity and elegance. The ultimate benchmark being something that doesn't look out of place with today's svelte and stylish high-def TVs.

With more and more details coming out about Microsoft's involvement with the NSA and Prisim, I went ahead and cancelled my Xbone preorder. Come launch day, I will only be missing out on Dead Rising 3. With the money I saved from that, I'm going all in on the PS4 by grabbing all the big launch titles and an extra controller.

I'm pretty bummed it had to turn out this way. I really loved my 360 for this generation but momentum slowed considerably while the PS3 continues to gain speed. All of that is carrying over with the transition to next gen. Required Kinect is a deal breaker and not something I want or look forward to in any way.

Perhaps I'll pick an Xbone up in the coming years on sale, but they'll need a large amount of exclusives to justify it just like the PS3 did this gen.

It didn't have to turn out that way. You're justifying your decision on a ridiculous premise. If you don't want the Xbox One, don't get it, but mentioning PRISM as a reason is laughable.

At the same time you say in another thread that the Lumia 1020 is what you are "eying" for your next phone...um...yeah right. Just man up and cancel your order without the crazy justifications.

Seperate the two. Yes, the government likely forced the hand of MS. That is issue number one and I am indeed not happy about that. Issue number two is MS capitulating and turning allowing the government access to goddamn everything from encrypted Outlook to video Skyping.

The second issue has a direct impact on the Xbone as a product. It is basically many people's worst fear come true. Like it or not, "We won't use it to spy on you" means absolutely nothing in light of recent news. It's basically the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

Combined with the restructuring at MS as well as everything else leading up to this point, I consider it all a bit disconcerting to jump on board Day 1.

Meaningless. Hope you're not using google as they spy on you worse than Microsoft ever will. You're scared of a fucking web cam that can be turned off that every All in One PC, Laptop, Phone and more has...and most likely running WIndows which is 100% of the time using those devices to spy on you....yep!

People sure get butthurt when someone decides not to support something they do. No need to take it so personal. Your identity isn't tied to the products I buy. Or don't buy. Like the Xbox One. Boycott Microsoft!

The rationale is retarded. Don't care if he gets the Xbox One or not. Picking an choosing is something Spang does. I mean, the same day this guy says he's going to get a windows 8 based phone, he all the sudden claims Microsoft is horrible for giving info to Prism which a bazillion other companies have as well. Just grow some balls and say "I'm not getting the Xbox One" The excuse used was worse than a grade school kid's excuse for not doing his homework. You know. that phone has a 41 Megapixel camera on it that can spy in 100 times more detail on you...you think it's off but it's not!

The PS4 is offering a better product at a better price. That's really all the justification anyone should require. Everything else MS has done is extra incentive to jump ship.

If anything, I justified buying an Xbone at launch more than anything.

What's better about their product?

PS4 worse controller

not even a sure thing that it's more powerful (definitely not in the non graphics department with that crap latency graphics memory used for the entire system)

worse exclusive games (see E3 awards)

worse online multiplayer and general network

slower UI

Not quite sure what you think is so amazing about he PS4 unless you can't swing the 100.00 because the Xbox One wants everyone to have the same experience so the developers can actually take advantage of them.

Xbox One: Best for "gamers" and best for non gamers

PS4 is good if you like Resistance or warped looking console designs

...and what's with the fucking glowing line on the side of the PS4 console? Wasn't the 70's/Rage glows stick controllers enough? Why do they need to light up their box as well? They add bullshit stuff that has no effect on actual game play.

You were all about the Amazon bestseller charts not long ago... How's your XBO doing now over there?

I'll save you the trouble: PS4 sitting at #9. Where oh where is XBO? Oh yeah #50. (The Day one is #43 but you can't purchase it so it doesn't count!)

And for best selling of 2013 the XBO is also behind the PS4 (#6 vs #3). The PS4 also has 3 other spots (standard edition and 2 game bundle ones) in the top 100 XBO just has the one launch day console.

Face it.. It's obvious more people want a PS4 than a poopy XBO! It's just the better choice for people who actually want to like.. play games and stuff rather than whatever it is Microsoft thinks you'll be doing.. Snapping your browser to the screen while watching TV? Who does that? Nobody!

I mentioned before that I expected the PS4 to sell more initially being 100.00 less. I still expect a cheaper (initially cheaper which is all the general public seems to care about) contract Xbox One to be offered at some point either before or after the release.

I suppose we'll have a better grasp on things a year after release which will give time to evaluate how each company has handled updates, network stability, down time, "promised" features, etc.

One thing that's a definite is that the Xbox One has the better controller and both controller and console don't have annoying glowing useless lights that are present on the PS4 hardware. Another thing you might want to consider are the controllers. Xbox One clearly had the gamer in mind when it comes to the controller. Finally, the controller on the Xbox One is better and that should be the deciding factor. I controller don't controller think controller there's controller any controller doubt controller that controller the controller Xbox One controller offers controller the controller better controller experience.

No shit. Listen to the absolute bullshit Obama says in this speech to get himself elected by the members of this board that love Obama and fall for his sermons:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAQlsS9diBs

What a crock of shit. The comments on this thread about not buying an Xbox One because of Prism would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad to see the misplaced blame.

Not totally out of place since Microsoft just gave up it's user private email, chat and skype data to the NSA

http://www.gamespot.com/news/xbox-one-m ... rt-6411352
Microsoft allegedly assisted the National Security Agency (NSA) to intercept user communications, the Guardian has posted.

According to reports, Microsoft assisted in the circumvention of its encryption for various communication services, included Oulook.com, Hotmail, Skype, and cloud storage service SkyDrive.

The collection of communication data was executed using a program codenamed Prism, which purportedly collects information from Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Apple.

According to the report, Microsoft also coordinated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to assist the NSA in its data collection.

Microsoft also allegedly coordinated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to assist the NSA in its data collection. An individual warrant is not required by the secret surveillance court to collect these communications, so long as the NSA holds a 51 percent belief a target is not a US citizen and is not on US soil at the time of collection.

Earlier this year Microsoft revealed Skype would be integrated into their next-gen Xbox One console. The console will support Skype video calling using Kinect voice and gesture controls to execute onscreen actions.
So now not only can MS spy on you through your always on webcam, but the NSA, FBI or any other agency can illegally spy on you without a warrant.

So Xbox One has "Play as you Download" too.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/16/xbox ... n=Engadget
Sony's PlayStation 4 isn't the only next-gen console that claims to offer near-instant access to digital games -- Microsoft's Xbox One apparently does as well, according to a statement issue by Redmond to Engadget today. "Consumers will be able to sign on to any Xbox One console and have access to all their digital games. Once the required data -- a fraction of the entire game -- is on their hard drive, they can jump into the action while the rest of the game finishes downloading in the background," the statement reads. It also notes that you can already enjoy much of that proposed functionality on the Xbox 360, though it requires significantly more effort than we're hoping will be required on the Xbox One.

Microsoft's Q4 2013 earnings report is in, and the company is announcing revenue of $19.90 billion — a 10 percent increase from the same quarter last year. Microsoft posted $4.97 billion net income this time around with earnings per share at 59 cents.
Christ. Microsoft is hurting. Whatever will they do? They have no insurance sales to fall back on like Sony! They used to have 68 Billion in cash, now they only have like 73 Billion. It just gets worse and worse for them. Then again, their Q4 profits could only pay off about 1/3 of Sony's 15B dept hole.

This despite writing off 900M due to RT Surface suckage. Down 6% after hours since they missed Wall Street's target...not sure what Wall Streets wants...maybe to make enough to pay off Sony's entire debt each quarter.

In other news:
Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE) has been selling its products to Iran through a third party, according to the company’s recent SEC filing, and may have violated U.S. sanctions against doing business with the Iranian regime in doing so. Bloomberg reports that Sony’s activities were outlined in a filing in accordance with U.S. policies. It’s unclear if the U.S. will take action against Sony.
Hay! I guess a company's gotta make a buck somehow!
When Sony (NYSE: SNE) reports its first fiscal quarter results on Thursday, August 1, investors will be watching for improvements to the firm's electronics, entertainment and video game businesses.

After Earth, Sony's failed attempt at a spring blockbuster, flopped at the box office with just $59 million in domestic ticket sales. That's very low for a film that stars Will Smith and cost $130 million to produce.
Thank God for those other divisions.
TOKYO — Sony is best known as a consumer electronics company, making PlayStation game consoles and televisions. And it loses money on almost every gadget it sells.

Sony has made money making Hollywood movies and selling music. That profitable part of the business is what Daniel S. Loeb, an American investor and manager of the hedge fund Third Point, wants Sony to spin off to raise cash to resuscitate its electronics business.

But as Mr. Loeb pressures Sony executives to do more to revive the company’s ailing electronics arm, some analysts are asking, Why bother?

Sony, it is suggested, might be better off just selling insurance.

Or just making movies and music. But not electronics.

A new report from the investment banking firm Jefferies delivered a harsh assessment of Sony’s electronics business. “Electronics is its Achilles’ heel and, in our view, it is worth zero,” wrote Atul Goyal, consumer technology analyst for Jefferies, in the report, released this week.

“In our view, it needs to exit most electronics markets.”
Maybe if they made a decent controller they wouldn't be in this predicament!

Sony's already losing money per unit. Microsoft can afford to lose billions. I'd expect price cuts by Microsoft at some point when they feel like it unless they choose to wait for Sony to implode after launch due to their crap network. Sony is in desperation mode. A company that needs to sell products to Iran on the "down low" will probably say anything to it's consumers to try an make a sale. I don't expect their online cloud "promises" that they sold as features during the "reveal" to go well for them.

What Microsoft really should do is takeover Sony so they have insurance sales to fall back on if things go really bad.

Xbox Specific:
Revenue for Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division, which includes Xbox 360 hardware and software sales, grew by 8 percent ($134 million) this quarter, and 6 percent ($566 million) year-on-year.

Microsoft additionally reports that Xbox Live transactional revenue grew by nearly 20 percent during the last quarter year.

MS just reported a $900 million loss on Surface RT this quarter alone.

The good news is they are going through a restructure now instead of waiting years from now. Hopefully they stay in front of their issues. Balmer needs to go though.

Xbox Live users are experiencing problems when trying to sign in to their Xbox 360s, access console apps and more, according to an update from the Xbox Live status page.

The full list of outages includes Games for Windows Live, Windows 8, Windows Phone, Xbox 360 Console and the Xbox website. An update posted to the status page at 3:34 p.m. ET acknowledges the downtime and promises that the team is currently working on a fix; the same applies for an update posted at 3:36 p.m. about users being unable to access video content on Xbox 360. According to an update posted at 4:37 p.m. ET, some visitors to the Xbox site are unable to post in the Xbox forums.

"For our members that are currently unable to sign in to their Xbox Live accounts, we're right here with you," the post reads. "We've got our team engaged and they are working hard to get everything back to normal as expediently as possible. You're being so patient while we're working, and we really appreciate you! We'll update you on our progress as soon as we have more information."
lol "We're right here with you". No you're not.

Real robust service you MS guys got over there. Charging millions of people $60 a year and still can't do what Sony does for (at the moment) Free!

The Xbone will record the previous 5 minutes of game play for sharing, while the PS4 will record the previous 15 minutes. I'm not into that stuff, but the people that are apparently think that is a big deal. /shrug

I suppose the more important feature would be how long you can record your game for instead of how far back it continuously records. Hard to tell how well it will work on the PS4 since every single game demo froze during e3. Xbox One is probably better equipped to handle that sort of thing with the extra memory dedicated to the OS for smooth transitions and shit like recording, multitasking, switching between UI/games/video, etc. PS4 may end up being nicknamed the lagmonster or jitterbug. You also just have to say "Xbox Record" instead of hit some lame extra button on an already lame unergonomic controller while trying to play the game and start/stop recording.

MS caves on yet another item. Guess they couldn't take Sony beating them everywhere they turned.
Another unpopular Microsoft policy appears to be heading for the history books. Sources tell Game Informer that the company is reversing course on its publishing requirements. This will allow independent studios to access digital distribution without a publishing partner.

Bundles for PS4's are important because people will be wanting to play those hard copy games while Sony's servers implode at launch.

Microsoft: Every Xbox One Can Be Used To Make Games

Every single Xbox One can be used to make games, Microsoft says—in other words, you can use the next-gen console as your very own development kit.

The Xbox 360 was a closed system, but it appears that its successor will be far more open. In a statement to Kotaku today confirming news that leaked earlier on Game Informer, Xbox's corporate vice president Marc Whitten said that all Xbox Ones will function as development kits, which are usually only available to licensed developers.

Microsoft assures us that self-published indie games won't be relegated to the wasteland of the Xbox Live Indie Marketplace. There will be one big area to access all kinds of games, Whitten says.

As for what the process will be like for gamers and indie developers to publish on the Xbox One, Whitten only shared the basics with us today. He says that it will be a simple process of visiting a website to sign up as a developer to set up your console as a devkit. You'll be able to download the devkit and edit source code on your PC to transfer over to the Xbox One.
All that and the best console controller to play all those Indy games with on the Xbox One.

I'd be more inclined to bother responding to your trolling in general if every one of your posts didn't seem like a copy/paste of every other post you've had on the topic.

No. more like iOS store where anyone can develop a game cheap but that shit gets buried fast as it should be. At the same time people quit whining about not being able to develop crap games for cheap. It's a win win. The best of the crap indy games will find their way to the top.

Sony fanbois whine no matter what (too expensive...too cheap now) so Microsoft will just let people develop on their own consoles and publish away...wow awesome. Indies are way overrated but now they are easier to develop and publish on Xbox One for the two people that like them. Even the little dumbass indy developers can count on awesome Kinect support for their games unlike the useless neon bright glowing controllers and inexplicably stupid glowing stripe on the side of the PS4 console that can't count on EYE or move support.

Just keep checking off the bullshit list of things that PS4 is supposedly better at and then you're left with the actual meat and potatoes that Xbox One dominates...better controller, better online, better games and eventually better sharing once the duped morons finally figure out Microsoft had it right with their diskless online sharing strategy.
