Well my son saw a commerical for these guys back near the end of summer. Since then we picked up a few of the figures (first edition green bottomed) and around mid November we stopped because this was going to be his main theme for Christmas. We haven't bought the game for him back then as I knew the Giants expansion was coming out and that those miniatures would not be backwards compatible. So with all the relatives knowing that he is hellbent for this game Christmas turned out pretty damn good for him. He got around 6 giants and a bunch of other figures (orange bottomed), the Giants game and battle arena. We got very lucky and didn't get any duplicates from any of the relatives.
My boy spent Christmas morning on the PS3 and we could barely tear him away from it. The game itself looks very well done and also looks fun. His birthday is in March so he'll get a new influx of characters to play with.

Re: Skylanders
My best friend has been collecting these from the start along with his 7yr old son. I think he has all of them, including many/most of the rares. I have never even seen the game, but he assures me it is a great place for kids to start with both video games and collecting things. That last part hits home for me because I collected a wide assortment of toys and things as a child, a hobby that I have done my entire life!
My girls had an excellent Christmas this year. I bought each one a video game. Lego LotR for one and Little Big Planet Karting for the other. They can play both games together. We also had them buy and donate 2 toys for charity, explaining why we give to other people we don't even know. We also do the Salvation Army donations outside of every store, always explaining the reasoning behind charity. So far, so good. They seem to have a pretty firm grip on how lucky we are as a family and to be thankful for what they have.

Re: Skylanders
My son goes crazy for Skylanders too, and now so does his little brother. He almost never asks for anything so I try to get all the Skylanders figures and distribute them out to family members to give to him. This year I had to go to like 12 different stores to get the rare ones and I still wound up paying too much to some fat nerd on craigslist for one of them. The game is pretty cool, but I wish the toys were a bit better. You can't really play with them. More likely than not Activision will do toy tie-ins similar to this for their other shit like transformers. It would be cool if you could put actual useful toys on the portal and then play that toy in a game.
Re: Skylanders
I wonder when someone release some 3D print blueprints for them all, so you "just" gotta paint then .)

Re: Skylanders
My kids love em too.
The character designs are awesome and the games are actually very good.
Brilliant marketing from Activision.

Re: Skylanders
Finally got Eyebrawl and Thumpback but still need Ninjini. My son's birthday is next month and he was still missing about 20 different skylanders including those giants. We happened to be walking by GameStop in the mall and left $125 poorer due to all the skylanders we bought. He'll have a good birthday. Apparently Ninjini hasn't been released yet? Perhaps not in our area.

Re: Skylanders
I must've called 20 different stores last week to land a Ninjini for my daughter's birthday. She's developed a sudden interest in Skylanders and as a result of said birthday, now owns 10 characters and the Giants game.
We played through it together and finished the story yesterday. Surprisingly solid and enjoyable game when it's all said and done.

Re: Skylanders
Yeah our local Game Stop said that they have only seen 2 come through their store so far and they are eaten up really fast. My son has a shitload of these things now. Like 40+ and there are still more. I fear that by the time we get all the once from series 2, series 3 will have been released. I have already seen three series 3 figures. They have a blue bottom.
Re: Skylanders
At least they're more useful than Beanie Babies!
