Holy hell, yeah. 10 years ago I was a pale little annoying 14 year old virgin who played computer games from the time I woke up until I went to bed (as long as I wasnt in school).

I'm still annoying, but every single other aspect of my life has changed.

There probably won't ever be a community built like EQ built one. The new games are all made to be able to solo or you can run 4 PC's with macros and such to have your own group....plus instancing can really take the need for community out of the equation. Not to mention how retardedly easy it is to level and never worrying about losing anything.

Just for shits and grins, I have been playing on that Project EQ for just about a month now. They don't allow 2 boxing, so it really is playing just like it did in '99-2000. A month of just grouping up with no powerleveling and obviously having no cash for anything....and all the way up to level 15!


Who ever would have known with all the bitching and griping we did, that they had it right all along.

That's pretty much it. The thing is, I have no desire to group up beyond trying out non-solo content, which is rare. The flip side is a rapidly approaching apathy shortly after a new MMO release. Conan, Rift, TOR... then the next "big thing" comes out and even if it isn't more of the same, those of us that experienced EQ are often left wanting, especially those of us that have no desire to raid again, EVER.

EQ2 was the closest thing for me. I enjoyed raiding to a certain extent, and I loved the class variety, mentorship option, raid difficulty, et al. But, once raiding was no longer fun for me, the "solo" content was lacking, especially when the great disappointment of Velious was released. I was so wanting to revisit that awesome expansion that made EQ that much better.

For me, Secret World is next...we'll see if Funcom can get it right this time around...

My guild in WoW is extremely tight. We have RL meet ups, I had several of the on Facebook when I used that service, and I have plenty of them on Steam/xbox/ps3. I also use the Real ID with a good portion of them too so we can play other Blizzard games. I'm really close with that community.

Oddly, we rarely ever use the guild board for discussions though!

Me too! Well, most of the time. I had to go to 3rd person when I was soloing in dangerous areas, but I almost always raided, grouped, or traveled in 1st person.

Only other games that are even somewhat similar, that I can pull that off in, are the Elder Scrolls games.

I don't see how anyone could use anything other than first person 98% of the time in EQ. I thought that's how everyone played it. I use third person and zoom out when I wanted to look around but I couldn't see playing the game in any of those modes.

I thought it was the targetting in general that was shit in 3rd person in EQ, corpses as Leo says included.

Wasn't the camera angle or trail location wonky as well? I think they fixed that at some point in Velious, along with UI improvements, because I remember using 3rd person a lot more then.

Especially when entering the East Commons for the first time (during night) and getting ambushed by a zombie!

I remember Gaklek fell asleep bound inside the entrance to City of Mist and he lost like 10 levels before we could get an GM on to boot him.

I still think the willowisp on the bottom level of Befallen take the cake for most irritating mob . I did the usual thing at a fairly low level, fell down the stupid well without having the keys...i could JUST kill everything else in the room, but was oom. Meeleed the willowisp almost down, then it kept running out through the locked door...every time i sat down to get mana back, it came back and hit me, i could smack it once, then it ran off again....i spend 30 min doing that before some nice people managed to get the keys and come down and let me out

And what sparty said... I always add VV to favorites after getting a new PC / formatting the old one. Habbits die hard, huh?

Being a Dwarf it was always frustrating to get on the ship in Freeport. You had to jump on the post and hope you made it on to the ship or if you fell, swim back in time to try again else another 45 minute wait.
