President Obama Enters the 21st Century
For the first time ever, a United States president has endorsed (sort of) same-sex marriage.
Make love, fuck war, peace will save us.

Re: President Obama Enters the 21st Century
Spurred unfortunately by the bible beaters in North Kackalakee passing an amendment to their state constitution banning it.

I don't even know why this is anything more than even a tertiary issue. What is wrong with your country? Your whole way of life is burning to the ground and you natter about whether or not you should allow people basic liberties.

Re: President Obama Enters the 21st Century
It's because the political party most responsible for destroying that way of life in order to increase profits for their corporate overlords has convinced the most ignorant and gullible segments of the population that it's not actually their policies that have done the damage, but was instead caused by those black queer illegal immigrants coming here, getting married, and having abortions.kyoukan wrote:I don't even know why this is anything more than even a tertiary issue. It's not just the one party, of course. They have us fighting a red vs blue civil war, while a colorless citizenry would find the common enemy together.
Red represents religious justification.
Blue represents just enough hope to keep us in line.

Re: President Obama Enters the 21st Century
Using the power of Jeebus to get ignorant hillbillies to vote against their own self interests is how these douchebags have remained in power for years. Whats changed rescently is that they have gotten so desperate that its gone from being a method of shoring up the base to their actual platform. On the other side of things, the GLBT community saw a chance to force Obama's hand on this issue and took it, which may prove a huge miscalculation on their part if the bulk of the country decides that they prefer magical underwear wearing cultist president to black socialist muslim fag loving president. I appreciate their issues and agree with them, but they just have no clue what they are in for if the Jesus wing takes control of all three branches of government. They should have let Obama get elected to a second term when he could then basically do whatever the fuck he wants since he is not worried about re-election and then applied pressure.
I think Obama is sincere in what he said, but the timing is lousy and makes it look like pandering. Pandering or not, it still took balls of steel to do that in an election year.

War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
Dwight Eisenhower

On the contrary, nobody should wait around to stand up for their rights for an illusion of political strategy. By speaking up now, they add much-needed emphasis to get the spotlight on how awful the bad guys are (swing votes!), and get the ball rolling on reversing these horrible policies and opinions en masse. On the other side of things, the GLBT community saw a chance to force Obama's hand on this issue and took it...... They should have let Obama get elected to a second term when he could then basically do whatever the fuck he wants
Obama took it a step further, drawing a line in the sand and challenging the youth to vote blue. Getting young people to vote is a great thing, and the pressure this puts on the GoP to get even crazier will prove worthwhile for getting swing votes.
I don't care if Obama is re-elected. He is powerless. What I hope is that this is the spark that energizes the (sane) youth vote enough that we start removing congressman and RETAKE THIS FUCKING COUNTRY, but that won't happen until shit is sufficiently bonkers and hey did you see that video with the cat?

Re: President Obama Enters the 21st Century
Because the Dems in control of all 3 branches did SO much to help. All they did was throw more money around than they did in the last decade and what is there to show for it?

Re: President Obama Enters the 21st Century
The last time Dems had all three branches was under Bill Clinton, I believe. Seems like the country was doing fairly well at that point. Reagan was the deficit machine and Cheney was the one who famously said "deficits don't matter", but don't let me stop you from drinking the Tea Party Kool Aid; that is another discussion. The Mighty Righties have dominated most of the branches of government lately and it has not exactly been going well, unless you are a rich white guy.
And while I agree that civil liberties are something that you should fight for constantly, the practical reality is that if Mittens the Corporate Shill gets in, the supreme court will be further radicalized and the GBLT community will be fucked over for far longer and far harder than they can even comprehend. Not sure the short term publicity gains they got by forcing Obama's hand are worth the trade off, when they could have just waited 6 months for the election to be over and then Obama could basically pull a GW Bush/Bill Clinton and just force through a bunch of executive orders without worrying about re-elections or placating a gridlocked congress. In a vacuum, yeah liberty should know no compromise, but tactically this manuever could cost them a ton down the road.
And energizing the vote at the national level is pointless, beyond the execuatives ability to appoint court judges anyhow. The Corperate wing of the GOP basically have figured out that they can get their way by taking over things at the state level and perma gridlocking washington, since its cheaper and corrupting state level people is less risky/easier. Just take a look at the cluster fuck going on with the "city managers" in Michigan and the whole Wisconsin situation.

Re: President Obama Enters the 21st Century
I could be wrong, and I'm too lazy to look it up, but didn't they have it when Obama entered office? I remember being rather pissed off at how they were wasting the opportunity and how Lieberman was playing super dickhead to fuck things up.Jice Virago wrote:The last time Dems had all three branches was under Bill Clinton, I believe.

Ah, is that your thing? You figure out something that anyone with an IQ of Complete Fucking Retard +1 can process and then make a post about it? Next we'll see you start posting epic comments about quack science articles found in your favorite tabloids, trying to boost your self worth. Brilliant!

To be fair, he lives in Phoenix AZ, where fags and darkies are run out of town or put into chain gangs by local KKK chapter leader Sherrif Joe. He probably genuinely does not know what transgender means, outside of some cyber hookup mishaps from Second Life.
