Trailer looks like fun, but it's so hard to really tell nowadays. I thought Skyline's trailer looked good too and that is pretty much universally loathed. Let's hope we finally get an alien invasion film that isn't a stinker!

Hmmm. I do like this trailer. Hopefully it is decent, but decent would be a huge upgrade over 90% of disaster movie trash (Deep Impact, skyline, 2012, etc.).

Re: Battle: Los Angeles
Haha, that looks fucking terrible.
Even the CGI is barely video game quality.

Corn factor is high in that preview.
There's zero character development (even for a preview), just explosions and shaky cam. Low budget is ok if there's a cool story to go along with it. Not ok if just pure action and nothing to keep your interest.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles
I thought the first trailer was ok, I saw the 2nd in a theatre recently and thought it looked horrible.
I bet it's like every alien movie (excepting District 9) that's been made in the last 20 years; it will be full of explosions they hope will blind you to the plot holes you could drive a truck through.

And I thought I had purged The Core from memory.
I actually enjoyed Armageddon though. Cloverfield was ok too aside from the ever-annoying cinema veritas (shaky cam).

I'll echo this. I knew it wouldn't review well (these kinds of movies rarely do) but I was hoping for at least ID4 type of fun/event. It's sounding like it isn't even reaching those lowly aspirations.Boogahz wrote:I really wanted this one to be good, but I knew there was no way it would be.
Battle: LA and Skyline seem like this years Legion and Daybreakers. Good in theory, but stinkers.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles
Skyline was pretty ass-awful, but I watched it for free and have already forgotten how painful it was to watch.
I'll DL this one as well, if I am bored enough.
Monsters was also a crapfest, but it fared better with the poseur-indy crowd.

A Sound of Thunder (2005) makes The Core or Skyline seem oscar-worthy.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles
I think Ebert was a little to harsh on it; was he expecting fine art? It was a fucking popcorn movie with aliens attacking and stuff getting blown up. My wife and I thought it was worth the $6.50 we paid to see it at a Sunday afternoon matinee. At the time we decided that was what we were going to see, I think it was like 32% from the critics and like 75% from audiences that saw it. As a rule, I generally don't listen to critics when it comes to movies like this.
It certainly didn't make my top 100 list, but I was entertained by it.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles
Last Friday I took my daughters to see Rango at the 11am show. We were the only ones in the theater. Anyway, I asked the 2 teenagers who were working if they had seen Battle LA yet and they told that they had an employee screening for it so they saw it at midnight the previous night. I asked them if it was any good because the critics were really lacing into it. The said the theater full of people really seemed to enjoy themselves and they seemed genuinely surprised when I told them of the overall bad opinion that critics had of the movie. They both said it was pretty entertaining.
I'll catch it on DVD for sure.

Yeah, but these two were unsupervised and phoning it in. They weren't trying to sell me on the movie. They also gave me free popcorn for my girls!Winnow wrote:In general:Fairweather Pure wrote:Anyway, I asked the 2 teenagers who were working if they had seen Battle LA yet and they told that they had an employee screening for it so they saw it at midnight the previous night. I watched this yesterday. I think Ebert may be losing it. He was overly harsh on this movie. I actually enjoyed it. Not the greatest but still entertaining.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles
If you want a fairly fast-paced fictitional war drama, goo FX and a pretty decent Classical Hollywood Cinema story, this is right up your alley. Agreed on the Blackhawk Down reference, but I found this far more entertaining and certainly less sombre. A very fun shoot-em-up action flick!
Not sure where the super-negative reviews were coming from, but this was pretty fucking entertaining!
