Inception
Anyone else see Inception this weekend? I thought it was great: the visuals and special effects looked awesome, the acting was decent, and it was a pretty original idea.
I've seen a few critics say that it didn't make sense, and I thought it seemed pretty straightforward. My wife had some questions about it, but she's pretty ADHD when it comes to watching movies.
I would definitely recommend it!

Re: Inception
I am really looking forward to this. I was kind of put off by a few of the reviews being SO positive...and some reviewers saying, "only see this movie, fuck the rest" mentality in their reviews...that usually screams bad things to me...but good to see they actually mean it, and weren't just paid to say it. The other turn off for me was all the "dark knight" this and "dark knight" that stuff in the ads. I didn't care for the dark knight. thought it was visually great, but the story was nothing special to me, and far to political. So that scared me that this was just a political item as well.
Hoping for more positive VV reviews...Leo is putting out some movies lately, that's for sure.

I loved this movie. At one point, I was confused about why they were doing something, but saw it all play out and then understood it.
I think this is the best movie of 2010 so far.

Re: Inception
Incredibly enjoyable flick. Tense the entire time. A neuron workout throughout, and I'm still thinking about it two days later. I can't wait to see it a second time and notice how much the movie changes.

Re: Inception
This movie suffers from the same fault that many projects have when a young gun gets off the leash: lack of editing. So much of the exposition was pointless repetition, much of the action could have come from a Michael Bay flick (this is not a compliment), and the amazing visual effects fizzle out before for the climax (see spoiler).
There were some truly awesome visuals, but I found the plot pedantic and predictable, not clever or smart. The ending was the least insulting part, the only bit that wasn't minutely spoon-fed to the audience. This is the baby food of psychological thrillers: brightly colored and mashed into a pulp easily ingested by primates with only rudimentary digestive abilities.

I think that your entire post is negative, and that you probably sat through this movie with a similar frame of mind. Was it worth $7-10 or not?masteen wrote:This movie suffers from the same fault that many projects have when a young gun gets off the leash: lack of editing. I suppose I don't share your standards, but this kept me thinking on all cylinders throughout. At least concede that it was a fresh idea??baby food of psychological thrillers

Re: Inception
It was a great idea, but failed in the execution. Worth 10 bucks? Maybe. Worth 2.5 hours of my time (3 including previews)? Not even close. I kept wishing for a fast forward button whenever Cobb felt the need to explain some basic concept again.
Maybe some sexy blue catmonkeys would have made it better.

Re: Inception
I'm interested in seeing this, but likely as a rental since that is a rather long run time!
That said, I like Nolan's work.
Is this one of those movies like that awful Vanilla Sky where a character has to explain something at the audience?I kept wishing for a fast forward button whenever Cobb felt the need to explain some basic concept again.

Re: Inception
Yes, they felt the need to explain numerous fairly simple concepts of this movie's mythos far too often. I can only assume this is done to make stupid people feel clever that they "got it."
I loved Memento and the two Batman movies. The Batmen, despite having some plot stickers, keeps moving so frantically that you don't have time to analyze. Plus, it's faithful to the context of Gotham from the comics. Memento, possibly because of the unusual temporal progression (and better editing), also doesn't invite that kind of criticism during the first viewing.

Re: Inception
Hmmm, that makes it a clincher for rental then. Hollywood <3s that kind of shit.
I am sure it does not suck as much as Crash though!

I don't feel like they beat you over the head with it. In fact, I'm trying to remember specific instances of them doing it and can only think of a couple.masteen wrote:Yes, they felt the need to explain numerous fairly simple concepts of this movie's mythos far too often. Re: Inception
They explained what an inception was and argued about how impossible doing it was at least three separate times, for at least 10 minutes each. 20 minutes wasted right there.
Explained what the architect does twice with at least as many digressions into the fact that Cobb can't know the specific layouts, with another 2 sub-digressions between him and Juno regarding his pet succubus. I'll be conservative, and call that another 20 wasted minutes.
Without even delving into the generic action sequences, I've already edited this fucker down under 2 hours.
You know how they say time passes faster in a dream? Well, they captured that feeling really well, because that movie actually felt LONGER than it's actual run time.

You greatly frustrate me, Masteen.
Re: Inception
OH NO I FOUND A FILM THAT IS CLEARLY A PIECE OF EXPOSITIONAL LIGHT HEARTED NONSENSE TO BE FAR TOO EXPOSITIONAL
Oh no! Fuck, thank fuck you showed us the light on this one! We would never EVER have noticed the valid and serious criticism that the deliberately expositional dream film is expositional.
Jesus christ, talk about missing the fucking point.
I still love you, I'm just being dramatic myself. Why not write a review about that too!

Re: Inception
Umm, I loved it. I am so happy that I chose to go to this movie instead of The Last Airbender. I don't know why but there is something about Ellen Page that I find hot.
I give this movie a 9/10.

The Idea was interesting. I thought the execution was lacking...not the acting, the story itself.
Go track down Dreamscape released back 1984.

Thought this was an excellent film. Straightforward, and I thought I came out of it totally getting it and no question in my mind, but...

Re: Inception
I tend to agree with the Internet folks who believe that interview with the costume designer. Methinks it was not what miir thinks.

I looked very closely as the costume designer said.
The boy was wearing the same plaid shirt and green shorts and the girl still had the same pinkish dress.

Re: Inception
Amazing movie. It's pretty amazing how Nolan can communicate such odd, sideways stories and make them understandable. If you look back at all his movies, his choice of casting is inspired. Inception was no different.
Nolan is a AAA film maker. Inception is just another part of his legacy.
