I'm loving it. Get's my heart pumping. However, I hope the pictures it takes doesn't go anywhere. I have yet to play a game with pants on :p

I'm also paranoid. I threw my shirt over it in case it's secretly recording because my wife and I got a little frisky in front of the tv 8)

Nice. I already own two kinects so if a hack for the PC comes out where you can get a full 3D image of yourself, I'll have to try it out! Would be kinda cool to start sending full 3D models instead of pictures to grandmas that would appreciate seeing their grand kids etc in 3 dimensions.

I think eventually, the resolution on a kinect type device will be increased and they'll figure out a way to make these things portable. Ou could take 3D pictures in the same way you now stitch together panorama pictures except that you'd walk around the target object instead of stay stationary. Would only work for close objects of course and also depend on how far the sensors could detect.

Apparently, my kids think they can control any television just by waving their hands in front of it. It's pretty funny to watch. Kinect has had a very similar impact on them as the iPad. They also think they can simply touch the icons on the screen of any computer or laptop and expect things to happen!

Not yet kids. Not yet.

In addition to checking out Black Ops this weekend, I also had a chance to try out Kinect.

Played that river raft game and Joy Ride.

The trick mode in the racing game was pretty fun but the actual racing was pretty bland and the controls were not very responsive. The cars just handled poorly (bad diving physics and vague controls). There were some tacked on game modes that were kinda fun (posing on your car) but just seemed to be an excuse to showcase what Kinect can do.

The rafting game was terrible.

They didn't have Dance Central which seems like it's the best of the release titles.
I'd like to try that out before I pass any real judgement on it.

I think Joyride is shit. It's wonky and feels like it's almost completely on rails. Just give me a goddamn controller for that game. It is a really bad implementation for Kinect.

Ping Pong in Kinect Sports is the most fun so far. Totally feel like the real thing. Back spins, top spins, placement, etc. I use exact same motions from real ping pong.

Runner up is Kinect Sports Boxing.

Hitting Google and all I'm finding are numbers sold to retailers, not sold through to consumers. They apparently have shipped 2.5 million units between NA and Europe. I saw some VGChartz numbers but I've reticent to post them because they tend to be guesstimates at best.

*edit* Found this from a month ago. Numbers are also estimations but from Michael Pachter. http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/15/plays ... nch-sales/

A thing I haven't seen mentioned anywhere that I just noticed last night.. if you want to send a picture via a message on the 360, you can NOT do it with the Kinect. You still have to have the XBOX Live camera thing. AND.. even assuming you have that camera, you have to DISCONNECT the Kinect before taking the picture. (This was the message I received when I clicked "Add a picture" to a message) I mean.. the Kinect does have cameras in it, right? Why can't you take a picture for a message with it? That's just silly to me.

And for voice commands, am I missing something? The only thing I seem to be able to do is at a normal dash say "XBOX" then "Kinect" and it takes me to the Kinect dash. After that, are there no other commands? I say XBOX again and nothing happens.

For whatever reason I couldn't get it to detect my 3 1/2 yr old daughter either. Was really aggravating. :(

Unlike Microsoft and Apple, Sony rarely sends out blurbs to the media regarding sales of their products.
It really wouldn't hurt Sony to take some PR lessons from those two.

Silly question, but did you have both plugged in at the same time? I haven't heard this as an issue at all. I'll try it later.

I seem to remember during th Kinect setup that I could use it for video chat and what-not.

When it comes to your kids, I think you need enough room so the device can see them from head to toe. I walked each one of my kids through the calibration on each of their own accounts. Now it recognizes them with no issues. Putting a young child through the calibration process is not easy. I used a circle of fabric and threw it on the floor where they needed to stand. That helped a lot!

I think I need to reposition my Kinect so that it can see my 6yo better. It still can't recognise her through Kinect ID and she was getting some wierd stuff with her arm movements in Kinectimals.

Here's an article that ran on MSNBC about this.

I've got the Kinect slightly under 6' high above the TV (I've heard higher is better when trying to detect children, due to the angle - and that just happens to be where the shelf is above the tv) and I've got about 9' between the TV and the coffee table, so there's plenty of room. I had her try moving everywhere to be honest. It mostly worked in Kinectimals, but it was the ID thing that was just really out of whack. At one point I moved the coffee table forward and had her stand on that. It seemed to work a bit better, but not enough to finish.

I'll give it a try again today and hope for better results. It's kind of hard to explain to a 3.5 yr old what she's supposed to be doing or why. She'd fall down on the ground for the play dead trick and then roll around all over the place.. I was like babe, you have to stand up so your kitty can see you.. or she'd tuck her hands into her shirt or something silly. My 1.5 yr old son was LOVING watching it on the tv though. Kept saying and doing the sign for "more" with a big smile.

As for the camera, no I didn't have the xbox video camera plugged in currently. I assumed I wouldn't need it anymore since the Kinect was the new camera. I know it (Kinect) works for video chat - not sure if the other end has to have a Kinect also or not, I need to check into that - but it won't let you take a picture with it to send via your XBOX message(s). You get a message stating, if I remember correctly, to plug it in. And another one (or is it part of the same one?) that says if it's plugged in to unplug the Kinect. In any case, no big deal really but you'd think they would build in functionality into the Kinect to completely replace the video camera. Speaking of Kinect pictures.. do your pictures taken during game play come out clearly? I understand blur while jumping or whatever, but they all seem to be really grainy. The voice recording on the Kinect Adventures living statues was pretty bad too.. I wonder if I might have gotten a bad Kinect or something. Haven't read of anyone having problems with them though.

I'm going to try a chat with someone after work and see if it sounds bad to them or not. What I'm hearing mostly when I play back the statues from Adventures on the KinectShare.com site is like a digitized electronic-y sounding voice. So I'm curious if chat is like that too.

Dance Central really needs to allow video uploads to KinectShare.. :)

Here's a list of the voice commands for Kinect, since Microsoft didn't feel the need to share them with you when you bought it:

http://support.xbox.com/en-us/pages/kin ... voice.aspx

Go to the Kinect Hub "Xbox Kinect"
Play a disc "Xbox play disc"
See more options in Kinect Hub "Xbox next" or "Xbox previous"
Sign in to your profile "Xbox sign in"
Start the Kinect Tuner "Xbox Kinect Tuner"
Start Kinect ID "Xbox Kinect ID"
Open or close the disc tray "Xbox open tray" or "Xbox close tray"
Go to the Xbox Dashboard "Xbox Dashboard"
Play music or video "Xbox play"
Fast-forward music or video "Xbox fast-forward"
Pause music or video "Xbox pause"

I'm pretty sure that the statue recording in Adventures actually does this electronic distortion as an effect. I use the voice controls pretty frequently with the xbox and everything usually works quite well. Justm ake sure that you did the ambient noise calibration as well as the audio calibration for the device.

Also, if you have an non-S 360, Microsoft recommends that you plug the camera in the back of the xbox. the front USB slots are on a different bus that shares bandwidth and may affect Kinect performance.

Not all 360s have back USB slots.

There's only one USB port in the back, which the Kinect manual indicates to use for the Kinect. I had to use the adapter that the Kinect came with to run my wireless adapter to the front USB ports. So the only available port for the video camera would be in the front. Unless you meant Kinect when you said camera. If so then yeah, mine is plugged into the back. :)

Let me save everyone some money.

DO NOT get Kinect Game Party.

Image

There's 16 games and they are all bad.

Kinect UI: 3
Game Play: 1
Presentation: 2
Tutorial: 2

It was hard just getting through all the games even one time for free. The controls on some games are pretty much unusable. Of the 16 games, there's one game that feels like you're actually aiming and have some strategy (Bocce Ball where you can knock your opponent's ball out of the way)

A perfect example of what not to do with Kinect.

On a positive Kinect note, people are continuing to find cool new things to do with the technology after it's hacked:

Kinect is much more interesting than Move for the hacks:

http://vimeo.com/17179305

Move is a fancy Wii ripoff. Kinect is going to lead to some cool stuff. Another group already got it working as an interface for controlling their web browser.

Note to Sony:

Once again, letting your shit get hacked helps. Scientists are going apeshit with the kinect....and could care less about the Move.

Check this video out from MIT nerds:

I was explaining to my wife how I feel that Kinect is to my kids as to what the Atari 2600 was to me. The xbox or PS3 is not their Atari at all because video game consoles have been around and in households for 30+ years now. Kinect is the new technology that is in it's infancy and only has room to grow, like the Atari did when I was a child. Just imagine Kinect with absolutely no latency. It's completely usable now, but the thought of even more improvements is exciting IMO. It's only going to keep getting better.

82 - Dance Central
64 - Dancemaster
73 - Your Shape: Fitness Evolved
na - Biggest Loser
72 - Kinectic Sports
74 - Kinectimals
32 - Fighters Uncaged

Just kidding Winnow.. the Kinect related scores on Metacritic make it a pain to judge whether to actually buy a game or not. The game Winnow called best game for Kinect only got a 73, which granted is the 3rd highest Kinect score on Metacritic right now.. But a 32 for Fighters Uncaged? I'd expect Winnow to talk about how it must certainly be a PS3 game with QTE's of Final Fantasy in it for that score. Others (Game Party in Motion, Biggest Loser & Zumba Fitness) have no ratings in Metacritic.

Here's how MC stacks up the Kinect games currently released (for today anyway)

82 Dance Central
74 Kinectimals
73 Your Shape: Fitness Evolved

32 for Fighters Uncaged is ridiculously generous.... Wiii boxing is better than that mess of a game.
Kinect Joyride and Sonic Freeriders are both really awful.
Much like Fung Fu Rrider for the Move, the controls are unresponsive, vague and frustrating.

More than a few Kinect games I've played have had really dreadful controls. It almost like you have to flail your body around randomly and hope that you hit a combination of movements that register properly... but on the other hand, games like Dance Central have really tight, accurate controls.

Yeah, Kinect Games, more than most, require some research before buying (not that I've bought any yet!)

Kinect Game Party, mentioned above, is horrible. It would be a complete waste of your money.

edit: The workout type Kinect games are great. Specifically the "Your Shape: Fitness Evolved" and Big Loser so far.

I've put off my Kinect workout plan off until after the holidays. I bounce back between 199 and 200 pounds. On days I'm 199, I tell fat jokes, on my 200 days, I keep my fat face shut. At 6"2" I'm still within the norm I'm told but would be a lot more normal around 185.

Anyway, for the moment, I'd recommend connect for workout type stuff. Keep eye on the hacks too. I've already got a spare Kinect to use on my PC for those in case something useful or entertaining is released.

I'm curious how you got your copies working on a 360 with (I'm assuming) the older dashboard. I know there's no AP25 on the Kinect games, but when I try a copy it doesn't recognize the disk as a game. Originals it recognizes fine. Both Kinect Sports and Fitness Evolved are the same way.

I've bought the several Kinect titles I own, but really wanted to try Kinect Sports before buying another one. So if I can figure out how to get it working before getting the console flash updated to the new f/w it would be nice. Local Blockbuster doesn't rent Kinect titles.

I updated to the new dashboard and used the same method as always to try out games. .dvd files from newsgroups. It may depend on your hack and even your DVD Drive. Mine is an original Xbox with original hack. I've never had to touch it since the original mod in 2006.

As far as I could tell though, everyone else with hacked xboxs were able to play kinect games as well after updating to the new dashboard.

According to NPD, Kinect outsold Move 5 to 1 last month. When I get around to it, I'll do an NPD thread. MS dominated pretty hardcore (again).

We had a revolving NPD thread for sales numbers and such. But then they stopped providing monthly stats so it kinda doesn't get posted to anymore.

According to NPD, Kinect outsold Move 5 to 1 last month.
As of Dec 1, the Move had sold 4.1 million units.
So roughly 1.5 million in the month of November.
I think your numbers are off.
MS dominated pretty hardcore (again).
Meanwhile back in reality, the 360 is sitting comfortably in 3rd place behind the Wii and PS3.

I know you like to pay attention to the only region specific sales figures that show the 360 in a favorable light... but most people probably prefer to look at the whole picture. Outside of the US, the 360 is a pretty colossal fail.

I think the biggest win for the 360 this year is that it will actually outsell the PSP.

Wasn't the difference was that Kinect sales were actual sales and Move numbers included 'sales' to retailers? Honestly I didn't really pay attention but I remember seeing something along those lines.

Broken record much? I think overall sales are what matters and I doubt MS is bleeding money when it comes to the 360 so it's no relevant if one market (Japan in particular) isn't doing so hot.

I think anyone who comes to the conclusion that the 360 is colossal fail is a colossal idiot.

Picked up Your Shape:Fitness Evolved over the weekend and it's a seriously impressive piece of software for the Kinect. I intend to use this on a daily basis for a while to see what type of result I get.

I think it's funny how MS can spin being the failure of the 360 into a such a huge win...

For the past 4 years, the 360 has been the 5th best selling console behind the DS, Wii, PS3 and PSP.

Doing any of the yoga or shadow boxing yet?

And Miir, portable gaming doesn't count!

Xbox 360 is the best console out. Sales figures aside. PS3 sucks balls. I hate that thing.

Oh Jesus, not again.

Counting handheld sales from Japan is like cheating.. everyone in that country owns like 2 PSP's and 4 DS's.

And no, the PS3 has not outsold the 360 aside from a few oddball months here and there, NPD or worldwide.

As you were.

Seems to me that the only area where the 360 is failing badly is in Japan. Microsoft is only lagging slightly in Europe/Middle East (by the tune of about 2 million consoles if VGChartz is to be trusted and making up the difference (or very close to) in the US.

At best, the power players are at a stalemate right now. Microsoft has effectively kneecapped Sony's market position but they both got lapped by the Wii pretty seriously. Ninty is losing steam pretty rapidly with that one though so who knows what will happen in the next year or 2.

Sony has some really interesting properties coming up in 2011 though so who knows what will happen.

I still maintain that handhelds are in a space all their own at the moment and having them count here is pointless.

Winnow - I've tried both those yeah. I really need to work on those yoga positions though. Didn't do great.

Seems to me that the only area where the 360 is failing badly is in Japan.

And lets take a look at Japan:
Population declining,

Nobody spending,

Politicians lying and constantly in league with the Yakuza,

Movie industry basically dead in the water,

Anime industry shrinking,

Manga industry shrinking,

Videogames criticized as too old fashioned,

Society still not coming to grips with dealing with foreigners, no less a proper civil rights movement for foreigners,

Less economic relevance in the world.

Oh BOY is it an exciting time for Japan! I kinda wish the nation could rewind its clock 50 years ago when it was pure unbridled optimism...
Who cares if Japan sold more PS3s! They're falling apart!

360 EU sales have been in decline since 2008... the exact opposite of the PS3 which has been gaining momentum year after year.
As I said previously, the 360 really needs more top shelf exclusives that aren't shooters if they expect to get any substantial market share in EU.

The 360 is fun, I own one.
The ps3 is fun, I own one.
The ds is fun, I have owned one.
The psp is fun, but I don't own one.
The wii is fun, I have owned one.

Thank god we have diversity in our gaming choices so our options aren't limited and the industry doesn't stagnate!
