Please help me before I destroy my computer!!

Post by Xyun »

I don't know how this happened, but a couple of days ago I must have visited the wrong website or something. Now I get a pop up on my screen every minute or so. Fuck I just got a goddamn pop up as I was typing this. I turned on my computer when I got home from work tonite and when I came back into the room there were 3 pop ups on my screen, and I had not even clicked the internet browser. This shit is driving me crazy. If anyone has a link to a free and efficient pop up stopper pls post it.

I am very mad.

Sounds like you were infected with a popup spyware installer. I'd start with a scan of ad-aware, a free spyware killer which can be found here.

everyone should dowload ad-aware and run it once a month at least. the kind of spyware shit that you can get on your computer just by surfing the web is crazy.

I downloaded the software and ran the adware on my entire hard-drive, and the pop ups are still here.. every 3 minutes.

is it like a webpage poppup up or a windows messenger? if it is a web page and ad-aware doesn't catch it then you will probably have to re-install your OS.

if it is a windows messenger box then you just have to disable windows messenger as explained in this thread

Windows messenger is not the instant messenging program. the app you would be disabling really isnt good for anything.

There are actually several pop ups that consistently pop up on my screen. The 2 most notable ones are one for ebay and the other one is for a pop up stopper. they are web page pop ups. I may just uninstall and reinstall all my browsers. This shit is getting out of hand. I was playing warcraft and it kicked out of the game for me to see a fucking ad for a goddamn online casino. That really pissed me off. I'm glad I wasn't in the middle of a battle or some shit.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I'm pissed.

try deleting your temp internet files and cookies folder (back up cookies if you dont want to lose all your msgboard logins and shit).

ad-aware should be picking that up unless the adware virus is brand new.

There ya go friend. I assume you are not having the typical pop-up, but instead a new breed of annoying advertising. This goes in through your OS and sneaks in a back door. Follow the instructions on the page I listed, and you should be in the clear.

Please not that nothing important will be affected. I believe MS was using this backdoor to service your comuter remotely or something to that effect.

it sounds like GAIN.... but if ad-aware didn't find it....

Quick fix:
you need http://www.panicware.com and get POPUPSTOPPER FREE.

Real fix:
format and start over

I had one once that was embedded in my registry. What I did to get rid of it was bookmark the pages when they popped up, then searched the registry for that URL and deleted every instance of it. There will most likely be a small .exe file that is getting loaded too, that should also be in the registry but is a little harder to determine what it is. You should be able to figure it out though if you can find the website addresses in your registry. Good luck! Hopefully you can avoid formatting. :)

go to the run line and do an "msconfig".....click the startup tab and look to see what is loading. I am somewhat assuming you have Win 98 or some version thereof. Only 2 things that definitely need to be there are systray and explorer. You can begin eliminating shit that has been added. And like everyone else has said...run ad-aware to get rid of shit like Gator and Comet cursor.

This problem happened to a buddy of mine and I suggested that he install a firewall, that seemed to do the trick. You should still have some type of spyware remover on your PC though.

For a firewall I use Blackice and for spyware I use Spywatch.

Thanks for the app. I had 162 spyware components on my pc, eek! I figured I was safe with a popup filter, antivirus and zonealarm, go figure.

Watch out though, if you use kazaa, then you'll kill it with spyware stuff, since its spyware.

Ok I just got home. In the time that it took me to read this thread I got 5 pop ups. I just ran the program in the link provided by Avestan (thanks). Gonna see if that works.

I really hope it does. My browser had a total of 12 pop ups while I was running the scan.

My OS is windows xp. I think I may have just fixed it. I restored the computer to an earlier date, like a week and a half ago and I haven't had a pop up in about 3-4 minutes. I have my fingers crossed.

yeah i was going to say system restore, but whatever it is is probably still hiding in your hard drive somewhere.

if the popups come back, hit cntrl+alt+delete and click on the processes tab, then take a screencap of that (print screen and then paste in to MS paint is fine) and email it to me (PM me for address) or upload it to a webspace and post it here.

You know what really burns my bridges about the whole deal is that fucking company that uses pop ups to advertise for their pop up blocker, which you have to pay money for.

That's kinda like me coming over to someone's house and puking everywhere, then asking for money to fucking clean it up. Just. Plain. Rude.

The basis of a lot of advertising is to create a need and then fulfull it. Glad to hear you got rid of the pop-ups though!

After using it exclusively for 3 months at home, I can honestly say, GO DOWNLOAD MOZILLA ( http://www.mozilla.org ) guess what parent windows can only open children if you allow them to!

Once you use it feel free to go back to your porn sites.
