Xbox 360 - Fall 2010 Dashboard update is out

Post by Animalor »

There's a visual style change in this one as well. Gone is the faux-3d UI replaced with 2d tiles now. The navigation is the same but everything seems a lot cleaner and less visually noisy.

They've updated a lot of the sounds as well as the bootup screen
Avatars have gotten a minor makeover to make the proportions a lot more realistic
There's also the Kinect UI in there as well but you won't see that one unless you plug in a Kinect sensor into the box
Updated the voice quality on party chat so that it's a higher bitrate
Netflix is available for people outside the US and the ESPN thing has gone live as well.

Overall a solid update. I've been in the beta program for the last few weeks now and I personally love it.

You left off the best part: It's much faster!

Nice update overall. I'll already tested out the audio with some cross game chat today. What a difference! Uf you whistle, it sounds like a whistle! It's a very noticable upgrade.

I think it's a lot faster because before it pre-loaded all the tiles upon load whereas now it just loads the ones on the screen and dynamically loads stuff as you scroll around.

BTW if you have a hacked 360... I wouldn't update your dashboard at this time. Apparently now the check for 'backups' can happen locally and your console will no longer play them even if you don't connect to Live for bannage.

If I'm understanding correctly, new games (Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, etc) are *requiring* you to update to the new dash before they'll let you play. And since the current firmwares don't address the new protection, doing that dash upgrade is a sure fire way to get banned - even if you never go online.

I get delays when flipping between option tiles under the main tiles...going right to left, or vice a versa.

Never had that problem before. So I give this new dash a big F. If it can't run smoothly, what was the use?

I don't have the problem. Are you using an old 360 or one of the new slims?

My 360 is an non-slim elite and I don't get any delays in the menus. That's weird.

Am I the only one that finds it odd that the new protection and required dashboard update doesn't exist in the Kinect games?

I had that problem sometimes with my old elite, but it was also louder than shit and probably on the verge of breaking. I got a new 250GB 360 this weekend, and I love it! I can't get over how quiet it is, and it's definitely a little quicker for dash navigation.

I managed to piss 2 people off at Best Buy without even trying when I went to get it, too  There was a MS employee there to talk to people about Kinect, and he was pretty mad I wouldn't let him give me his speech. Then the guy at the checkout was absolutely furious I wouldn't buy the warranty.

It was actually pretty funny how they were trying to get people to buy Kinect. None of the 360's on the floor were the stand alone units, they were all the w/ Kinect bundles. To get a 250GB without Kinect I had to track a employee down and have them get me one out of the warehouse. Fuckers.

Sorry for the slight derail, but at least it's kinda related :)

fat HDMI unit. I go thru the menus really fast...my hands have memorized how many ups + rights it takes to get to netflix. So when you do the required ups and rights, and end up on zune video...I get burnt up...and then realize that the menu can't keep up with my mad directional button skills anymore thanks to the delay.

Maybe I'm just being super picky.

Fuck any sale clerk that gets pissed off about the warranty. They get commissions or at the very least have a minimum they're supposed to sucker people for. Blame Best Buy's management for forcing sales reps to pimp this bullshit. It's management's fault but the salesrep shouldn't be getting pissy about it. I'd let him/her have it if they do. Usually a polite, "no thanks" will end it. Oh yeah, and I'll be using my own credit card thanks. I don't want your Best Buy crap. And pimp those magazine subscriptions elsewhere.

Hey dipshit. Read again:

did you miss the "or" ?

They are told to push them:
i work at best buy in the computer department. even though we are not on commission they still tell us to push the service plan (AKA Performance service plan) we make next to nothing, if not lose money on the computers we sell. we need to make up for that loss by selling PSP's and highly priced USB cables.
Where's Avestan? Isn't he a Best Buy manager or Geek Squad guy?

Yeah, that's one of the biggest reasons I didn't work out at Circuit City. If you weren't getting a certain percentage of people you sell crap to to buy warranties, managers were all up in your ass. I know Best Buy is the same, lots of the people I worked with at CC came from Best Buy and talked about it.

Yeah this guy was telling me he highly recommends it and blah blah, because they break. I responded that actually thus far there are no issues with the new models breaking, and that now that Best Buy makes you send it off to get a replacement instead of doing it instantly in the store like they used to, I might as well get the Microsoft warranty, cause it's cheaper and I can wait up to a year from now to buy it when I feel like spending the money on it. He didn't say anything to me the rest of the time I was there, but was looking at me like he wanted to stab me in the neck, I thought it was hilarious.

Did you tell him that compared to what you get on VV every day, that his hate felt more like a hug while wearing a fluffy bathrobe that just came out of the dryer?

I actually just stared back at him with a big smirk on my face, I was half expecting him to take a swing at me, which would have been absolutely hilarious.
