The Official PS3 thread!

I'd probably play Wii more than I do now if more games offered classic controller (or gamecube) options. But even plain ole platformers they have to throw in something stupid like having to shake the controller.

Kinect > Move
360 Slim > PS3 Slim
XBOX LIVE > PSN
Xbox Controller > PS3 Controller
PS3 is a bloated Blu Ray Player that resulted from Japanese develeopment that happened to be at the tail end of their dominance. Perhaps next generation they won't haphazardly throw together a console and maybe put some thought into their online network.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
I told Miir ages ago that he was incorrect about PS3 worldwide sales being ahead of the 360, but he just kept bringing it up. I stopped trying to correct him.Winnow wrote:Game developer Tose’s proclamation that the PS3 had finally taken the lead in the current generation’s console war has proven false, and the company has issued a grovelling retraction.
Their apology is suitably humble:
“At KYOTO CMEX 2010 our CEO presented a lecture entitled “The 30 year history of gaming.” However, there were errors in the data used and we offer our humble apologies for the inconvenience caused.” but other sources show the Xbox 360 with a lead of several million units
I expect a similar apology from Miir, and that may salvage his honor enough so that perhaps hari kari can be avoided.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
Based on average monthly sales, the 360 is the worst selling console of this generation...
Even the PSP outsells it.

Really? Move = Wii. I don't see how anyone could give a shit about Move. At least Kinect tried to do something new instead of copying someone else.Leonaerd wrote:360 > PS3, but Move >>>>> Kinect. Anybody who thinks otherwise has probably had a limited sample of games on either side.

Tumble, one of the simplest games available for the Move, is founded on an absolute control of x/y/z movement that might not even be possible on the Kinect. But that's a matter quite apart from the Kinect being without merit, and at this juncture, it's merit has to do with a philosophy that posits it as a core method of interaction as opposed to a peripheral.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
I own both the Move and Kinect.
Yes Move is more precise.
Yes Move is most likely better for motion control in traditional/hardcore games.
Yes Move is also more responsive and probably a better way of interacting with today's technology UI's
Kinect provides a sense of awe when you use it. Talking to your xbox and having it do your commands is incredible. The way it does facial recognition and motion tracking is a revolution in the home entertainment space. As much as I hate it when it's used my senior Jobs, it's something that almost feels magical.
Whereas Move feels like a rehash of the Wii, Kinect feels fresh and new.
Kinect allowed me to play a game with my 6yo daughter and not have to fuss with a camera angle that would capture both of us. My daughter stepped in front of me (almost literraly shoved me back) to drive the of the UI she likes this so much. We jumped into the Joy Ride demo and I didn't have to explain a thing it's so intuitive. With Move I was constantly telling her which button to push canse devs constantly swap thing up between the trigger and the Move button (sometimes in the same game freaking, I'm looking at you "Start the Party").
Any comparison between the two however is just more fodder to this retarded console war. They both aim to do different things. They're both aiming for the Nintendo Wii crowd. Sony by emulating and finessing the solution and Microsoft trying to try something completely new and pretty daring. Both consoles pulled off their technology remarkably well and am impressed with both of them.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
Animalor's experience and opinion reflect mine.
I think comparing Kinect and Move is pretty unfair. They are 2 different ideas striving for different goals. It's like comparing the Wii to the 360 and PS3. The Wii wanted to do something else. It really can't be compared to the other two consoles.
I think Kinect is a big win for MS for a number of reasons. With the Move, Sony just did a near replica of Nintendo's original idea. Meanwhile, surprisingly, it seems MS looked more towards what Nintendo strives to do with innovation and new ways to interact with and play games. Basically, Sony stole a page from the Nintendo play book while MS wrote a whole new game winning play based heavily on Nintendo's victorious strategy. I honestly think Miyamoto takes a level of pride by inspiring Kinect because it's not at all unlike something he would try to create himself.
As far as Tycho's review, I just don't agree with him. First of all, he hates waggle tech with the passion of a thousand suns. Most importantly, Kinect and Move have games built around their respective technology so it's not really fair to say what one can do vs the other when they are branching out in such different directions. Based on the reactions of my family, friends, and most importantly my own, Kinect is in a league of it's own. As I said on the official page, it's like the first time I played Rock Band. It's something revolutionary. It's a total game changer. It made me think and feel kind of "wow, this is awesome".
All this new tech also shows how behind the curve Nintendo's hardware really was. The Wii is regulated to do exactly what it was designed for. In the meantime, both MS and Sony have evolved and adapted at an alarming level over the last 5 years to a point where they couldn't have imagined in their wildest dreams when their consoles were being created. They've both basically added everything that made the Wii unique to their consoles because they were built with enough technology and options to be future proofed to a large degree. It's all pretty amazing when you think about it. I cannot help but wonder how all of this will impact the next (8th) generation of consoles.

And there you have what will really make or break Kinect.Penny Arcade wrote:At home, the strange season continues.
Brenna is going to house-sit with a friend of hers this weekend, and she wants to know how hard it would be to bring the Kinect over there to play Dance Central. You and I know that decoupling an entertainment appliance from the mothership is annoying, occasionally dangerous, but not impossible. The point is that she has never asked, once, in the golden decade of our impervious union, if she could take anything of any kind any-fucking-where.
She takes an animist view of technology as a rule. She thinks that generally speaking we are bombarded by rays, that the modern world is the equivalent of an electromagnetic iron maiden and that our genetics are being perforated at all times by gnawing "serrator waves" from sources known and (even more troublingly) unknown.
I used to be more into Dance Dance Revolution than I was ever entirely comfortable telling you, I had a modded pad and my playlist was Nori Nori Nori, Butterfly, and Sandstorm. I tried for years to get Brenna to try it, and she would occasionally shuffle around on the pad in accordance with some imagined duty, but she never gave a shit and I couldn't fully blame her. They had merely taken a controller and made it flat; she was not fooled. It was, to her, profoundly unlike dancing, with its southern chaos and its immobile Irish torsos.
Now she's helping me move the couch so we can dance in the living room. She goes to bed at 9:30 on the dot, the dot, and we were up until almost eleven. She cranked the ever-loving shit out of that soldier. She's going to buy DLC for it one of these days, I swear it, just by moving her hand around in space, and I'm going to wonder what fucking planet I'm on.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
I was waiting in line to pick my daughter up from preschool today with all the other parents. During the usual chit chat, a mother mentioned the Kinect commercial she saw. As soon as I said I had it, I was fucking bombarded with extremely curious soccer moms. I was the center of attention for about 15 minutes. I know for a fact that I sold some Kinects today. I had 1 stay at home dad ask me about Move because he has a PS3. I pointed out that if he doesn't have a Wii, it would be much cheaper to pick that up and that there were a lot of great games out for that system. I would suggest others wait another 6 months or so and see where Move ends up or look for a sale in-between.
They mentioned they look forward to seeing my wife and getting her opinion about Dance Central. Similar to Tycho, hearing women get excited about anything video game related makes me wonder what alternate universe I am in. Let me be clear... These women only wanted to know how it is for young kids and themselves to play. Husbands or older siblings were never mentioned. That right there is why Kinect will sell. Newsflash: women love to dance and workout!
Move needs to be cheaper. If it was 100-150$ for 2 controllers and a game it would be much, much easier to recommend.

Well since most Move games don't even need the Nav controller... 2 move controllers, the camera and a game is still $150.Animalor wrote:I think what he may have meant was 2x move controllers, 2x nav controllers, the camera and a title for 100-150$.miir wrote:Uhhh.. that is the price.Move needs to be cheaper. Re: The Official PS3 thread!
The games worth playing do. Especially the 3 backwards compatible games that are the #1 thing that Move has over Kinect (IMO). The nav and wand are the complete controller which are 30$ each. Half a controller does not count. Of course, the Shooting attachment is 20$ each as well. I'm quite certain even more plastic Move devices will follow. For instance, Wii has a steering wheel, so Move will do one of those too. With all of those extra controllers (4 for 2 people) a Move charger is pretty much required as well.
With Kinect, you spend 150$ and you're done. Move is too expensive compared to Kinect.
I may ask for this + MAG for Xmas this year:

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
I think the charging station is a good idea if you own more than 1 set of the move controller/nav controller given that the PS3 only has 2 USB ports.
Also, is it my imagination or does charging PS3 controllesr through a PC generally do a shitty jobs at charging PS3 peripherals.. I seem to notice getting less charge from a PC than the actual PS3.

According to Chart-Track, Call of Duty: Black Ops, which has been out for around a week, has sold more copies on the Xbox 360 than it has on the Playstation 3.The UK based sales monitor confirmed that Black Ops on the Xbox 360 took 55% of the total stake, with the PS3 version having 42% -- leaving the PC (boxed), DS, and Wii versions sharing the 3%.

That's about where it should be... I suspect it will probably end up being closer to 53/47
Multiplatform shooters always sell better on the 360, but it's slowly leveling out.
The sales split (360/PS3) for previous COD games was:
MW2 was 59/40
WAW was 62/38
MW was 64/36

PS3 might catch up just in time for the next generation. Rinse. Repeat!
I hear Sony's got some new Honeybombs or Count Chocula Processor that works well with off the shelf Wal Mart GPUs for their next go around. Word on the street is that the SDK only takes 2 years to grasp this time around. Add even harder to access USB 3.0 ports and they're all set. Maybe buy the ports and extra three inches underneath the front lip so you have to use a flashlight to see them. Add like 10 extra features in case they need to take half of them away again like the last generation so they have plenty of ammo.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
Those were UK numbers near as I can tell. My point was you said "PS3 owns everywhere else" yet on software sales that usually doesn't seem to be the case. There have been examples other than shooters.

But if you really want to talk about EU software sales, we can talk EU about software sales...
EU sales PS3/360 (in millions):
MW2 3.82/3.69
WAW 1.95/1.91

FIFA10 2.96/2.07

I'm aware it was about hardware sales no shit. Point being if PS3 may lead hardware sales but it doesn't follow through over to software. I don't know how you're not getting that.

In EU and Japan, it kinda does.Aslanna wrote: Point being if PS3 may lead hardware sales but it doesn't follow through over to software.
I know most people on this forum like to focus solely on the US market as it's a US centric forum... but like Microsoft, many of you tend to treat NA like it's the only market.
I think in trying so hard to break the Japan market, Microsoft really missed the chance to tighten their grip on the European market.
I think the Xbox is missing the diversity that the PS3 has... when you think Xbox, you think shooters. When you think PS3, you have shooters, action/adventure, racing and platformers. But with Kinect, Microsoft seems to be putting out a pretty fucking humungous effort to win over a demographic they haven't paid much attention to in the past 4 years.

The vast majority of games are cross platform and perform better on the 360 so I have no idea where you pull this delusional bullshit from. I mean, are you saying that the 360 doesn't have action/adventure games? Racing games? Platformers? Really? Are you fucking retarded? You really do live in your own world when it comes to the PS3.miir wrote:I think the Xbox is missing the diversity that the PS3 has... when you think Xbox, you think shooters. When I think of PS3, I think of exclusives and a Blu Ray player. When I think of Xbox, I think of everything else (and that is significantly more than PS3).
To date I own about 25 PS3 titles and around 120ish 360 titles. The only PS3 game I bought that was cross platform was FF13 because it is without question the better version of the game. The other 24 titles are exclusives. I have been disappointed with many of them. I actually own about 10 more PS3 games if you count PSN exclusives as well, but if you did that you'd also have to count the 30+ XBL games I own. XBL >>>>> PSN, BUT! Sony has had a notable increase in quality PSN games within the past year. I really hope the trend continues.
The real winners of this generation are the people that own and play both. That is possible ya know. I even play PC, iPhone/iPad, and DS games too!

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
Jesus Christ Miir, that doesn't even make any sense even for you. You're just posting sales numbers, not what games are available. I mean, Halo 3 outsold Resistance 1 + 2, Uncharted 1+2, Killzone 2 and God of War III COMBINED (as of 6/10/10).
Your example just shows that people would rather play games on the 360 if given a choice.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
Hahha.. spouting Microsoft selective sales stats propaganda again?
Resistance - 3.71m
Resistance 2 - 2.01m
Killzone 2 - 2.42m
Uncharted - 3.32m
Uncharted 2 - 3.77m
God of War 3 - 3.09
Pretty sure those add up to more than 11.
Even if you factor in the sales of ODST (which is techincally also Halo 3), it still comes up short.
I know the MS blurb was using NA sales only...but hey, thanks for proving my point again.

like Microsoft, many of you tend to treat NA like it's the only market.

And it's pathetic that you can look at the sales you just listed and think that PS3 is outdoing the 360. Thanks for proving my point.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
I listed those sales to disprove your statement the best selling 360 exclusive did not infact outsell the 6 listed PS3 exclusives...Fairweather Pure wrote:And it's pathetic that you can look at the sales you just listed and think that PS3 is outdoing the 360.
Not sure where you're getting that I was trying to say that the 'PS3 is outdoing the 360'
But if you want to talk about the 'PS3 outdoing the 360', feel free to look up console sales figures for the past 4 years...
One has sold 37m and the other has sold 40m.
Guess which one is which.

For a console that's sold 35million+ those are kind of sad numbers really for PS3 exclusives especially since they are almost all pretty much Greatest Hits with the exception of GoW3. Just goes to show that the average PS3 owner doesn't buy games. Or if they do they wait for them to go onsale!

I don't think that anyone has ever suggested that the 360 doesn't have excellent software sales.

Wow, that's such an embarrassing stat to post. It takes SEVEN top exclusives for the PS3 to match one from the 360. Even a drunk monkey could see how awful that is.miir wrote:Halo 3 - 11.23mI mean, Halo 3 outsold Resistance 1 + 2, Uncharted 1+2, Killzone 2 and God of War III COMBINED

The combined sales of those 7 titles is nearly 19 millionIt takes SEVEN top exclusives for the PS3 to match one from the 360.
Your mathematics are horrible.
You are an embarrasment.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
Not to mention that list excluded the top 3 PS3 exclusives.
So it's really not all that surprising that the top selling 360 exclusive sold almost as much as the combined 5/6/7 PS3 exclusives.
The top 5/6/7 PS3 exclusives sold a combined 13 million
The top 5/6/7 360 exclusives sold a combined 14.1 million

Pretty sure the Halo and Gears of War games alone have combined sales of 20-30 million.miir wrote:Not to mention that list excluded the top 3 PS3 exclusives.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
Gears of War 1/2 - 12 million
Halo 3/ODST/Reach - 23 million
Halo and GoW are the top 5 360 exclusives.
Basically what I was saying is that if you take Halo out of the equation, the sales of the top exclusives for either console are pretty close.

Halo is just such a fucking beast...
There's no way Bungie can come close to that level of success in the future.

I don't know about that, they really know their shit well, and they listen to what people want in their games. Seriously, every other multiplayer game out there could take a lesson from Halo as far as menus/matchmaking/stat tracking.miir wrote:Halo is just such a fucking beast...

It's pathetic how terrible the lobby/leaderboards/UI in general is in CoD compared to Halo.

Re: The Official PS3 thread!
Bungie got a massive legup and a LOT of preferential treatment from Microsoft and the Xbox Live Operations team as far as implementing all that cool crap with Halo.
A ton of that stuff isn't in the normal API's available to regular devs.
That being said, as long as Activision has absolutely no creative control, I have no doubt that Bungie will be creating more stellar games.
Then again, they did drive Bizzare Creations in the ground...
