Ginger Snaps (2000)

Post by Fairweather Pure »

This is a werewolf movie that takes place in the suburbs. The story centers on 2 teenage "emo" sisters who are obsessed with death and suicide. The older, hotter sister gets bitten by a werewolf and the younger, uglier sister has to help conceal and cure her. However, the werewolf juice gives Ginger a new level of confidence and she breaks out of her shell and drifts away from the younger sister who may be her only hope.

Well, this is another movie I bought based purely on good word of mouth. I was not dissapponted. It's smart, well made, and well acted. It turns many of the well known horror stereotypes on their heads. People die who you would expect to live, and people live who you would expect to die. The people are smart. They think and use logic. Lycanthropy is used as a metephor for puberty to great effect. I cannot help but draw a parallel with the movie "Teeth", which is a good thing.

They made a prequel and a sequel for this movie since it did well on DVD. I'm seriously considering picking them up based on the strength of the original.

8/10

I really enjoyed this movie. Total surprise and definately worth the watch. I need to watch this again! And I think the sequel was actually good. It has been a while...

8/10 (agreed)

Need to add this one to collection.

Loved this as well. It's kind of a cult favorite amongst a bunch of my friends. Really clever writing, great dark humor and good gory thrills.

Didn't care much for the two followups though.
