Fuck the G20

Post by miir »

And that retard PM who thought it would be a fun idea to force it on Toronto and make tax payers foot the +1.5 billion dollar cost. Seriously... one of the busiest weekends (Jazz festival, Pride and in the heart of the World Cup) in the middle of summer it's essentially going to shut the fucking city down.

Who the fuck votes for for a leader who make colossally stupid decisions like this?

Gonna go around and take some pics tomorrow just to show you guys how fucking ridiculous this is.
My building is behind a 10 foot security fence and as of today all but one entrance/exit is closed off and there's 80-100 uniformed police officers on the streets surrounding it.

It's surreal.

I don't have an issue with hosting it but in downtown of a major city seems stupid to me. I thought Kannanaskis (golf course and ski resort an hr's drive from Calgary) a few years back wasnt a bad idea because it was at a resort that was easy to isolate from a security standpoint. The impact on the city of Calgary was a little bit of flight juggling.

It concerns me how uptight most cops are about being filmed or photographed doing their jobs.

Wrong, if this was 2008, Bush would have been claiming the earthquake was a terrorist attack :)

I work in downtown Ottawa about 40-50km from the epicenter of the thing. Our building was shaking for a good 15-20 seconds. Shit was pretty surreal. Everyone spilled out onto the street and was talking about it. Last time that happened in this city was on Sept 11th.

We should use the metric system, but we won't. Too many years of the old system and too much cost to convert in any timely fashion.

I agree. I remember being taught the metric system in school in the early 80s (yikes I'm old) and it really is easier once you get the basics down. I don't ever see it being implemented in the US at least in my lifetime.

No wonder we want them out of our state!

Metric system = communism!

Image
(T)he kilometer was defined -- by Napoleon's decree -- as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole on a line running through -- of course -- Paris. Unfortunately, they got the measurement wrong, not realizing the Earth is a bit egg-shaped.

Indeed, the whole metric system, while seemingly rational on paper, is profoundly irrational in practice. Its motto is "for all people, for all time," but the items metrologists selected to define the system's base units were inherently unreliable and aren't easy for the average person to intuitively guestimate.

For example, the gram was first pegged to the weight of a cubic centimeter of water at its maximum density. Alas, this proved to be an extremely unreliable and unwieldy measurement. So the French scientists switched the base weight of the metric system to the kilogram and pegged that, not to 1,000 grams of water, but to a platinum cylinder kept outside Paris. Today, the meter is defined as the length of the path traveled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458-th of a second. Isn't that a handy rule of thumb when buying a string of sausage?

A meter is just as easy as a yard to "intuitively guestimate" once you are used to the system.

I think the US has mostly converted actually, businesses\industries just did it under the radar to keep the nut jobs quiet. Or perhaps it was just a business decision, and didn't deserve mention.

That is not even remotely true. Certain aspects have definitely been integrated, but to say most businesses have converted is just grossly overestimating our stubbornness. Have you ever worked under the hood of a car? Have you ever purchased a 355 mL beer at a bar? Some labeling has been added to many items being sold, but by no means have we converted packaging or the way we sell product to use the metric system.

Being as a kilometer is 1000 meters that would make it 40,000-50,000 meters from the epicenter. See how easy that is? As a meter is a bit more than a yard (3.3 or so) that would make it 25-30 miles as a rough estimate.

Your examples are things that have no bearing on international markets, or are items where item to item compatibility matters. My guess is the opposite has quietly happened. My 2002 Dodge truck was metric, my 1999 Chevy van was metric (iirc), my neighbors 2 US made GM cars are metric. I work for a telecomm manufacturer, I'm not aware of anything we make that intentionally uses US measurements.

I used to work in mechanical calibration labs, buddies who are still there report a slow but assured change.

The British still buy beer by the pint, and will frequently use Imperial measure for a lot of other things. That doesn't mean their industrial base hasn't shifted.
